In Car and Driver’s 2026 family-electric-SUV ranking, the Lucid Gravity is #1 overall, but its $81,550 starting price makes it a very different choice from the lower-priced Hyundai Ioniq 5. Families that need three rows should start with the Kia EV9 or Hyundai Ioniq 9; shoppers who do not need that capacity may find a two-row SUV more practical for their budget.
This is a U.S.-market shortlist drawn chiefly from electric-SUV rankings, not a ranking of every electric-car body style. Prices and EPA-estimated ranges below are figures listed by Car and Driver for the models in its live 2026 ranking, viewed October 8, 2026. Check the exact trim, current pricing, seating configuration, and manufacturer specifications before buying.
How these family EVs are ranked
There is no single objective definition of the best family EV. Car and Driver says its family ranking weighs roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. iSeeCars uses a different approach, combining reliability analysis and NHTSA/IIHS safety ratings with family-oriented considerations such as safety, storage and towing, comfort, and connectivity. Their rankings should not be treated as the same score or methodology.
The list below follows Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking order for its leading family electric SUVs, then interprets those picks through practical family needs: seating, budget, range, and safety evidence. Its placement is a publisher’s ranking, not a guarantee that a vehicle is right for every household.

Best electric SUVs for families in 2026
| Rank | Model | Starting price listed | EPA-estimated range listed | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lucid Gravity | $81,550 | 337–450 miles | Families considering a premium, large SUV and comparing its price and configuration against their needs |
| 2 | Hyundai Ioniq 5 | $36,650 | 245–318 miles | Families seeking a lower entry price in a two-row SUV |
| 3 | Kia EV9 | $56,545 | 230–304 miles | Households that need a three-row electric SUV |
| 5 | Hyundai Ioniq 9 | $60,605 | 311–335 miles | Families seeking three rows and additional passenger capacity |
Prices and range spans are the page-listed starting-price and EPA-estimate figures in Car and Driver’s ranking; they are not a quote for a particular trim. The ranking page’s listed range spans configurations, so compare the exact version you would buy rather than assuming every trim achieves the maximum. The cited ranking lists the Ioniq 9 at #5; the table does not fill the intervening rank with a model not specified here.
1. Lucid Gravity: premium large-family pick
Car and Driver ranks the Gravity first and lists an EPA-estimated range span of 337–450 miles. Its starting price of $81,550 places it firmly in a premium comparison, not a default recommendation for a typical family budget. Before treating it as a fit, compare the specific configuration and price with the number of passengers and amount of cargo your family regularly carries.
2. Hyundai Ioniq 5: lower starting price, two rows
The Ioniq 5 is the lowest-starting-price model among these four listed picks, at $36,650, with a page-listed EPA-estimated range span of 245–318 miles. Car and Driver describes its interior as spacious and its charging as fast. It is a two-row option, so it belongs on the shortlist when two rows meet the household’s passenger needs—not as a substitute for a needed third row.

- [Fast & Efficient Inflation] Powered by a high-performance motor, the OlarHike air pump delivers rapid airflow — inflate a standard car tire (195/65 R15) from 30 to 35 PSI(+5 PSI) in just 55 seconds, or a larger SUV tire (235/65 R17) from 30 to 35 PSI(+5 PSI) in only 2.2 minutes. Ideal for cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and sports balls. Important Note: The unit can only inflate car and pickup truck tires up to 51 PSI and is not compatible with heavy-duty pickup trucks or RVs.

Note:Please charge only with a 5V 2A or 5V 3A adapter. Avoid unbranded or high-power chargers.
- [Ultra Large Display & Auto Shut‑Off] Features a high-precision pressure sensor and oversized dual LED screens for instant, easy-to-read pressure readings. 3. Kia EV9: three rows in an electric SUV
The EV9 is the three-row choice at #3, with a listed starting price of $56,545 and EPA-estimated range span of 230–304 miles. Kia says the 2026 EV9 offers an available 99.8-kWh battery and up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity; both are configuration-dependent manufacturer specifications. Kia also lists available all-wheel drive. Check the particular trim for seating, drivetrain, range, towing equipment, and price rather than assuming those features come on every EV9.
5. Hyundai Ioniq 9: another three-row option
The Ioniq 9 is listed at #5, with a $60,605 starting price and an EPA-estimated range span of 311–335 miles. Car and Driver identifies it as a three-row option for shoppers who need more passenger capacity. Compare its exact seating arrangement and usable cargo room with the EV9 rather than choosing on row count alone.
Which electric SUV has a third row?
Among the models above, the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 are the three-row candidates. That label does not tell you whether the third row will work for your family: seating configuration and space matter, as does how much luggage remains when every seat you need is occupied. Confirm the exact configuration with the seller and try the intended passengers and child seats in person.

The Gravity is described here as a premium large-family candidate, but the cited ranking data does not establish its seating configuration or provide a comparable all-rows-up cargo test. Do not infer either from its size or ranking position. The Ioniq 5 is a two-row option.
How much range does a family EV need?
There is no single range target that fits every family. Start with the driving you actually do: regular local trips, longer drives, and the places where you can charge. Then compare the EPA estimate for the exact trim under consideration with those needs. The listed ranges above vary substantially by model and configuration, but a higher range figure does not by itself establish faster charging or easier road-trip stops.
- For mostly local driving: weigh the exact trim’s EPA-estimated range against your normal travel and charging access, rather than buying extra range solely because a different configuration advertises more.
- For road trips: consider both the route and charging stops you can use. Range and charging speed are different measures; the cited ranking describes the Ioniq 5 as fast-charging but does not provide a uniform, comparable charging-time test across these models.
- For households without dependable home charging: identify realistic charging options before deciding. The cited rankings do not establish a universal home-charging or public-charging cost for these vehicles.
What to check before choosing a family EV
Seats, child-seat access, and cargo
Bring the child seats, passengers, and luggage the vehicle must accommodate. Check installation and access to the row where a child seat will go, then load the cargo your family would take with all required seats in use. The reviewed sources do not provide a uniform cross-model child-seat installation test or comparable cargo measurements with every row occupied, so a model’s advertised seat count cannot settle fit for your family.

Trim-level price and equipment
Compare the price of the actual configurations you are considering, including the equipment and drivetrain your family wants. A starting price for one model is not a like-for-like comparison against a higher trim of another. The prices listed in the table are ranking-page starting figures, not current dealer quotes or a total-cost comparison.
Traction and climate
All-wheel drive may offer more confidence for families in colder climates, as iSeeCars notes, but it is a use-case consideration rather than a universal requirement. Compare the specific drivetrain available on the trim, and consider your local winter conditions and driving routes.
Safety ratings and awards
Safety evidence needs to be matched to the model year and the kind of result being reported. IIHS’s 2026 full-electric award list names the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9, and 2026 Kia EV9 as Top Safety Pick+; the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E as Top Safety Pick; the 2026–27 Rivian R1S as Top Safety Pick+; and the 2027 Tesla Model Y as Top Safety Pick+. Awards compare vehicles within size categories. IIHS cautions that “a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award,” so an award badge is not a direct cross-size crash comparison.

NHTSA’s 2026 model-year page lists the Rivian R1S and Tesla Model Y Long Range among vehicles selected for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing, and lists the Ioniq 5 in a separate advanced crash-avoidance verification-testing list. Selection for testing is not a star rating. Kia says its 2026 EV9 received a five-star NHTSA overall score and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award; check the current NHTSA vehicle-rating record for the model and configuration before relying on that claim as a rating result.
NHTSA provides a vehicle-rating lookup and a separate car-seat Ease of Use Ratings tool. Its portal explains that a vehicle without a New Car Assessment Program rating is manufacturer-certified as complying with applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards; absence of an NHTSA rating should not be read as evidence that a vehicle fails those standards.
Other electric SUVs families may compare
The Ford Mustang Mach-E, Rivian R1S, Tesla Model Y, and Volvo EX90 also appear in the cited safety and testing sources. Their inclusion in a safety list is not, by itself, evidence that they rank as family picks in the rankings discussed above. Evaluate them against your seating, budget, and use requirements, and verify current trim-specific specifications and safety results.
