There is no single best eco-friendly online store for every shopper: the right choice depends on what you need, where you live, and which environmental or social claims matter to you. Use specialist retailers such as EarthHero to browse curated categories, check product-level certifications for specific claims, and compare marketplace badges cautiously. A store’s sustainability branding is a starting point—not proof that every item or the business as a whole is environmentally preferable.
How to judge an eco-friendly online store
“Eco-friendly” can refer to different things: materials, ingredient choices, forest sourcing, packaging, reuse and repair, energy efficiency, or labor practices. Those attributes are not interchangeable. Before buying, identify the claim that matters for the product in front of you, then look for specific supporting information.
- Check what the claim covers. A certification may apply to one material or product category, not every aspect of a product or retailer.
- Look for concrete details. Materials, ingredients, applicable standards, and sourcing information are more useful than a broad “green” label by itself.
- Separate product claims from store claims. A retailer’s screening process may help shoppers navigate listings, but it is not automatically an independent audit.
- Consider the practical fit. Country served, shipping, price, returns, and stock can determine whether a store is useful to you. Those details should be checked on the retailer’s current site rather than assumed.
Online stores and shopping options to consider
EarthHero: a multi-category specialist retailer
EarthHero describes its storefront as carrying products across sustainable home and kitchen, cleaning, laundry, bathroom, hair care, skin care, oral care, children’s essentials, pet care, and outdoor living. The retailer says it reviews brands under five sourcing pillars; materials and ingredients, company responsibility, and ownership and representation are among the areas it names. This can make EarthHero a useful place to start when you want to browse several household and personal-care categories in one store. Its review approach is EarthHero’s own description, not an external certification of every listing or a guarantee that every product has the same environmental profile. Grove Collaborative, Plaine Products, and Meliora: leads for household and personal care
B Lab U.S. & Canada has described Grove Collaborative as an online resource for household and personal-care products, Plaine Products as offering personal-care products in returnable, refillable, reusable aluminum bottles, and Meliora as emphasizing ingredient-list transparency for cleaning and laundry products. These descriptions appear in a B Lab article published about five years ago, so treat them as leads rather than confirmation of current product lines, operations, shipping, or certification status. The same article noted that Grove had a plastic-free-by-2025 goal. That was a historical goal; the article does not establish whether it was achieved. Do not treat the goal itself as evidence of the company’s current packaging performance.
Amazon: a broad marketplace with product-level badges
Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly feature highlights products associated with 60 certifications, with product details tied to attributes such as recycled materials, organic content, worker well-being, and energy efficiency. In its 2024 sustainability report, Amazon said the program recognized more than 2.2 million products in 2024 and that customers purchased more than 1.7 billion certified units that year. These are Amazon-reported program figures; they describe the badge program, not Amazon’s overall environmental performance or an independent assessment of every product. Amazon also describes pre-owned purchases, repair services, and trade-in. The report says Amazon Trade-In covers qualifying devices in the U.S., UK, and Germany; eligibility and availability vary. Check the terms for the particular device and location before treating trade-in or repair as an available option.
What certifications can—and cannot—tell you
FSC: a focused signal for forest-related sourcing
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label can support a claim about responsible forest sourcing for products within the certification’s scope. It does not certify a retailer’s entire environmental performance or establish that every part of a product is sustainable. FSC’s guidance for retailers and ecommerce businesses discusses using labels, visuals, and search filters to help shoppers find certified products. Read the scope, not just the badge
A certification is most useful when you can connect it to a specific claim: what is certified, which standard applies, and which product or material is covered. A badge can help narrow a search, but it does not answer every question about ingredients, packaging, labor, shipping, or the retailer’s business practices. Use the accompanying product information to see what the badge establishes and what remains unspecified.

For a personal-finance decision, compare the item you actually need rather than paying a premium for a store’s overall image. Make a short list of the product’s relevant criteria—such as a particular ingredient disclosure, certified paper or wood, refillability, or repair options—and compare listings against those criteria. Then check the live checkout terms for total cost, shipping, returns, and availability in your country. The available evidence here does not establish current cross-store prices or a universal ranking, so a “best” choice depends on your location, category, and priorities.
