The best digital wallet or payment app depends on the job: Apple Pay and Google Wallet are for storing eligible cards and paying with a device; PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, and Apple Cash offer ways to send or receive money; and Zelle moves money between participating bank accounts. These products are not interchangeable, so start with your device, payment task, and the people or merchants you need to pay.
Choose by the payment you need to make
| Your need | Options to consider | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pay in stores or online with a card saved to a device | Apple Wallet with Apple Pay on supported Apple devices; Google Wallet on supported devices | Device compatibility, eligible cards, merchant acceptance, and availability where you live |
| Send money to another person | Apple Cash, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App | Recipient access, funding method, fees, transfer timing, and the provider’s terms for the specific transaction |
| Transfer money through a bank or credit union | Zelle, if your financial institution participates | Whether your institution supports it and what its terms say about the transfer |
This is a task-based shortlist, not a universal ranking. Official product information does not establish a single current, consistently comparable schedule of fees, limits, protections, or transfer times across these services. Those details can depend on location, eligibility, funding source, and transaction type.
Best for paying with a phone or watch
Apple Wallet and Apple Pay
Apple Wallet is where eligible cards and passes are stored on iPhone and Apple Watch; Apple Pay is the service used to pay in stores, apps, and online. Apple documents a payment design that uses a device-specific Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element and dynamic security codes for transactions. Apple also says the actual card number is not shared with merchants or stored on Apple servers for Apple Pay transactions. See Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy overview.
That describes Apple Pay’s payment credentials, not protection from scams, account takeover, or sending money to the wrong person. Apple Cash is separate: Apple says it supports sending and receiving money in Messages and Wallet, and received value can be used for purchases through Apple Pay. Check Apple’s current Apple Pay information for eligibility and availability.

Google Wallet
Google Wallet is a digital wallet for supported devices and markets, rather than a direct substitute for every person-to-person payment app. If you want to pay using a saved card, confirm that your device, card issuer, and country are supported. Google’s Google Wallet page provides current product and availability information.
Best for sending or receiving money
PayPal
PayPal is a payment and digital-wallet option beyond device-native tap-to-pay. Its suitability depends on the kind of payment and how it is funded or withdrawn; consult the current terms for the exact transaction rather than assuming one fee or protection applies to every use. Start with PayPal’s U.S. site; terms may differ elsewhere.
Rank #2
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Venmo
Venmo is commonly considered for person-to-person payments, but availability, fees, and protections should be checked against its current official terms. Do not assume that rules for one type of transfer apply to another or that a transfer works like a purchase with a merchant.
Cash App
Cash App presents functions for sending and receiving money, investing, and money management. Which functions are available depends on eligibility and location. Check Cash App’s official site and current terms before relying on a particular feature.
Rank #3
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Apple Cash
Apple Cash is a money-sending and receiving feature in Messages and Wallet, distinct from Apple Pay’s card-based purchases. Apple describes received Apple Cash as usable for purchases through Apple Pay. Confirm current eligibility and transaction terms on Apple’s Apple Pay information page.
Best for bank-to-bank transfers
Zelle
Zelle is described as a way to send and receive money directly to and from bank accounts. It is relevant only if your bank or credit union participates. Check with your institution and read its terms before sending; do not assume a transfer can be reversed or use Zelle as a substitute for a purchase-payment method without confirming the protections that apply. See Zelle’s official site.
Rank #4
Compare costs, speed, and protections before you pay
A service name alone does not tell you what a transaction will cost or how quickly money will arrive. Compare the exact route you plan to use: the funding source, recipient, withdrawal method, and whether the payment is a purchase or a person-to-person transfer.
- Fees and limits: Review the current terms and transaction screen for the specific funding and withdrawal methods. Do not rely on a fee or limit quoted for a different route.
- Transfer timing: Check the provider’s stated timing for the destination and method you will use; speed can vary by route and institution.
- Recipient adoption: A transfer app is useful only if the recipient can use it. For bank transfers, verify participating-institution support.
- Disputes and protections: Read the terms for the transaction type and the treatment of any stored balance. A wallet’s security features do not by themselves guarantee reimbursement for scams or mistaken payments.
- Region and eligibility: Confirm service availability, supported cards or accounts, and eligibility in your location.
What digital-wallet security does—and does not—mean
Apple’s description of Apple Pay explains one security approach: a device-specific account number and transaction-specific security codes are used instead of sending the actual card number to the merchant. That is useful context for Apple Pay, but it should not be generalized to other wallets or treated as a promise that every fraudulent or mistaken payment will be covered. For any service, protect account access, check recipient details before sending, and review the provider’s dispute process and terms.
