Re:

Best Crypto Exchanges in 2026: Buy and Sell Bitcoin, Ether and More

Coinbase is the strongest overall choice for many U.S. beginners, while Kraken Pro suits active traders and Gemini appeals to security-focused users. Compare all-in costs, custody protections, account holds, supported networks and tax records before choosing a crypto platform.

There is no single best crypto exchange for everyone. For a typical U.S. beginner buying and holding Bitcoin or Ether, Coinbase is the strongest overall starting point because it combines broad availability, a simple interface, and a more advanced order-book platform. Kraken Pro is a better fit for frequent spot traders who understand order books and want a transparent published fee schedule. Gemini deserves a close look from security- and compliance-focused users, while Crypto.com is strongest for people who value a broad app ecosystem. Robinhood Crypto is convenient if you already use Robinhood; Fidelity Crypto can be attractive if you want limited-asset crypto access inside a traditional financial-services environment.

This ranking is for a primarily U.S. retail audience and is current as of August 10, 2026. Availability, fees, supported coins, withdrawal networks, regulations, and customer protections vary by country, U.S. state, asset, network, account type, and product. A crypto exchange is not the same thing as a broker app, a self-custody wallet, a decentralized exchange, or a Bitcoin or Ether exchange-traded product (ETP).

Best crypto exchanges at a glance

Platform Best for Main strengths Important drawback
Coinbase Best overall and best for beginners Simple onboarding, broad U.S. availability, a beginner interface, Coinbase Advanced, and a large surrounding ecosystem Simple-buy quotes include a spread and may include a separate fee; Advanced fees are different from the standard interface. Crypto is not FDIC- or SIPC-protected.
Kraken Pro Active spot traders and transparency-focused users Order-book trading, published maker/taker pricing, extensive market information, and a customer-verifiable proof-of-reserves process Kraken Pro, the app, and instant-buy products have different pricing. Some assets and products have geographic restrictions.
Gemini Security- and compliance-focused users Full-reserve positioning, New York limited-purpose trust-company status, SOC examinations, ISO 27001 certification, hardware-key support, and address allowlisting Its entry-level ActiveTrader fees are not the lowest, and its asset and product coverage may be narrower than larger competitors.
Crypto.com App ecosystem and broad product features Multiple account-security controls, a broad ecosystem, and the company’s 1:1-reserve and proof-of-reserves claims Products, fees, and supported assets differ between the app, exchange, and countries. A 2022 proof-of-reserves report should not be treated as a current 2026 audit.
Robinhood Crypto Existing Robinhood customers who want simplicity Small minimum purchases, a familiar interface, and crypto availability that Robinhood says extends across every U.S. state Robinhood Crypto is a separate entity and is not a FINRA or SIPC member. Crypto is not FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected, and spreads and routing can affect the all-in price.
Fidelity Crypto BTC and ETH buyers who prefer a traditional financial-services ecosystem Direct Bitcoin and Ether access within Fidelity’s broader environment and established custody infrastructure It is a limited-asset alternative rather than a full altcoin exchange. Check current costs, transfer availability, and state eligibility before choosing it.
Interactive Brokers Crypto Experienced investors seeking a brokerage-integrated option Competitive stated trading commissions and integration with a brokerage account Asset selection is limited compared with full crypto exchanges, and custody and transfer features require separate review.
Uphold or eToro Specialized multi-asset or social-investing use cases Cross-asset functionality or social features, depending on the provider These are broker-style platforms, not direct substitutes for a deep crypto order book.

These are category recommendations, not investment recommendations. Independent comparison coverage also separates platforms by use case rather than treating one company as simultaneously cheapest, safest, easiest, and broadest. NerdWallet describes a methodology using provider questionnaires, demonstrations, interviews, hands-on research, and more than 20 factors; Coin Bureau’s U.S. comparison similarly distinguishes beginners, active traders, security, altcoins, and automation. See NerdWallet’s crypto-platform comparison and Coin Bureau’s U.S. comparison.

Which crypto exchange should you choose?

Use the following short decision guide:

  • You are buying BTC or ETH for the first time: Start by comparing Coinbase’s simple-buy quote with its Coinbase Advanced interface. The simple interface is easier; Advanced may provide more control over execution.
  • You trade regularly: Compare Kraken Pro, Coinbase Advanced, and Gemini ActiveTrader using the same asset pair, order type, volume tier, and funding method. Kraken Pro is the strongest active-trading candidate in this group, but its entry-level taker fee is not automatically the cheapest quote in every situation.
  • Your priority is documented security controls: Compare Gemini and Kraken directly, then review Coinbase’s security and insurance disclosures. A trust-company license, SOC report, security key, or proof-of-reserves review reduces some risks but does not eliminate insolvency, cyberattack, fraud, or market risk.
  • You want a broad app ecosystem: Crypto.com may be a better fit, provided the specific features you want are available in your jurisdiction and in the product you intend to use.
  • You already use Robinhood: Robinhood Crypto may be convenient for small purchases, but compare the quoted spread, routing, withdrawal capability, and tax-lot records against a dedicated exchange.
  • You only want Bitcoin or Ether price exposure: A spot Bitcoin or Ether ETP in a brokerage account may be simpler than opening an exchange account. It does not give you the same ability to withdraw or use the underlying coins on-chain.
  • You want to use crypto on-chain: Choose a platform that supports the exact asset and network you need, then plan a test withdrawal to a wallet you control.

How these platforms were evaluated

Rather than rank every platform with one misleading score, this guide weighs the factors that determine whether an exchange is useful for a particular reader:

#1 Best Overall

  • Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. 1. Availability: country, state, residency, fiat currency, account eligibility, and asset-specific restrictions.
  2. All-in cost: trading commission, spread, markup, deposit charge, payment-method fee, withdrawal fee, network fee, subscription cost, and any staking, margin, or derivatives charges.
  3. Execution: liquidity, order-book depth, slippage, order types, and market-order protections.
  4. Custody and security: passkeys, multifactor authentication, hardware keys, withdrawal allowlisting, cold storage, account-takeover controls, insurance scope, and incident disclosures.
  5. Solvency transparency: financial statements, reserve attestations, customer-liability coverage, snapshot dates, and whether customers can verify inclusion.
  6. Asset and network support: whether the platform supports the desired coin, blockchain, deposit network, withdrawal network, memo, or destination tag.
  7. Fiat movement: ACH, wire, cards, instant payments, settlement periods, withdrawal holds, and bank-account matching.
  8. Usability: beginner and advanced interfaces, recurring purchases, tax exports, account recovery, and customer support.
  9. Features: staking, lending, margin, futures, perpetuals, prediction products, NFTs, cards, and self-custody wallet integration.
  10. Tax records: cost-basis tracking, Form 1099-DA availability, treatment of transfers, and imported tax lots.

For a structured editorial score, a reasonable weighting is 25% custody, security, and solvency transparency; 20% all-in trading and funding cost; 15% liquidity and execution; 15% U.S. access and fiat rails; 10% asset and network coverage; 10% usability and support; and 5% tax records and reporting. The weighting favors the risks that can be most expensive or irreversible, but it does not make the result a universal truth. A frequent trader should assign more weight to execution and fees; a beginner may reasonably give more weight to account recovery and clear order previews.

1. Coinbase: best overall for most U.S. beginners

Why Coinbase stands out

Coinbase is the most defensible general recommendation for a U.S. retail user who wants to buy and hold Bitcoin or Ether without immediately learning a professional trading interface. It offers a relatively straightforward onboarding flow, a simple buying interface, and Coinbase Advanced for users who need an order book and more precise order controls. It also has broad U.S. availability compared with many specialized crypto products, although the exact assets and services available to a customer can still vary by state.

Fees: simple buy versus Coinbase Advanced

Coinbase has two materially different purchase paths:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Simple buy and sell: Coinbase includes a spread in the quoted price and may charge a separate transaction fee. The exact amount is shown on the order-preview screen.
  • Coinbase Advanced: This is an order-book product with maker/taker pricing. Coinbase’s Advanced page currently advertises entry-level fees of up to 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, with volume-based discounts. Fees can vary by order book, so check the live schedule before placing an order. See Coinbase Advanced, the Advanced fee schedule, and Coinbase’s trading rules.

That distinction matters. A simple-buy customer might see no prominently labeled commission yet pay through a spread and transaction charge. An Advanced customer sees a trading fee but may receive a tighter market price. Do not compare Coinbase’s Advanced fee with another platform’s instant-buy quote.

Is Coinbase One worth it?

Coinbase One currently has three tiers. The Basic tier costs $4.99 per month and provides zero-fee simple trades up to $500 per month. Preferred provides zero-fee simple trades up to $10,000 per month, and Premium provides unlimited zero-fee simple trades. These benefits apply to eligible simple spot trades, not Coinbase Advanced, and a spread still applies. Coinbase says some membership tiers may instead receive a 25% rebate on Advanced spot fees. Verify the current benefits and eligibility in the Coinbase One account information and benefit disclosures before subscribing.

A subscription only makes sense if its benefits exceed the monthly cost and the quoted spreads are competitive. A zero-fee label does not mean a zero-cost trade.

Security, custody, and protection

Coinbase says it holds customer crypto 1:1, does not lend customer assets without permission, supports security keys and multi-approval Vault withdrawals, and maintains crime insurance for a portion of digital assets held across its storage systems. Its insurance disclosure says the policy does not cover losses caused by compromise of a customer’s own credentials. Digital assets are not FDIC- or SIPC-insured. Qualifying U.S. dollar balances may receive pass-through FDIC or NCUSIF coverage when held in eligible custodial accounts, subject to conditions and limits; Coinbase itself is not an FDIC-insured bank. Review Coinbase’s security page, its insurance disclosure, and its explanation of client cash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should and should not use Coinbase?

Good fit: first-time buyers, recurring BTC or ETH purchasers, users who want a simple interface and an upgrade path to order-book trading, and customers who value a public-company disclosure environment.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: high-volume traders who need the lowest possible fee tier, users who require a particular altcoin or network, and anyone assuming that Coinbase’s insurance is equivalent to bank or brokerage protection.

2. Kraken Pro: best for active spot trading

Why Kraken Pro stands out

Kraken Pro is the strongest candidate on this list for an active spot trader who wants published order-book pricing, market information, and more control than an instant-buy widget provides. Kraken also publishes a proof-of-reserves process that allows customers to verify whether their in-scope account balances were included in the review snapshot.

Current Kraken Pro spot fees

Kraken’s published cross-platform Pro schedule lists the following spot rates. The applicable tier is determined by the better of 30-day spot volume or assets on the platform, according to Kraken:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tier 30-day spot volume or platform assets Maker Taker
Tier 1 $0+ 0.40% 0.80%
Tier 2 $2,500+ 0.30% 0.60%
Tier 3 $10,000+ or $20,000 assets 0.22% 0.38%
Tier 4 $25,000+ or $50,000 assets 0.20% 0.35%
Tier 5 $50,000+ or $100,000 assets 0.15% 0.30%
Tier 6 $100,000+ or $200,000 assets 0.12% 0.25%

Higher published tiers continue down to zero maker fees and a 0.05% taker fee at the top level. See Kraken’s fee schedule and its explanation of how trading fees work.

For scale, a $1,000 order at a 0.80% taker fee would incur $8 in commission before spread, funding, and withdrawal costs. At a 0.40% maker fee, the commission would be $4. Those calculations are not quotes and do not include the price difference between your order and the wider market.

Do not confuse Kraken Pro with instant buying

Kraken’s Buy Crypto widget, app, and instant-buy flows are not interchangeable with Kraken Pro order-book trading. Kraken states that instant-buy volume does not count toward the 30-day Pro fee tier, and deposit and withdrawal charges vary by method and currency. A first-time ACH, card, or digital-wallet purchase can also trigger a temporary 72-hour withdrawal hold. Debit-card purchases are available to some eligible U.S. customers, subject to regional and account restrictions. Check the withdrawal guidance and card-purchase restrictions.

Proof of reserves: useful, but limited

Kraken’s proof-of-reserves page reports a March 31, 2026 snapshot with reserve ratios of 101.6% for BTC, 100.9% for ETH, 101.1% for SOL, more than 105% for USDC, more than 105% for USDT, 101.3% for XRP, and 100.1% for ADA. Kraken says customers can use its interface to verify whether their in-scope balances were included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is evidence about a dated snapshot and specified assets—not a guarantee that Kraken cannot fail, be hacked, suspend withdrawals, suffer losses in an out-of-scope asset, or remain solvent in the future. When reading any reserve disclosure, check the snapshot date, assets covered, liabilities included, procedure or auditor, and customer-verification method. See Kraken’s proof-of-reserves page and its reserve announcement.

Who should and should not use Kraken Pro?

Good fit: active spot traders, users comfortable with limit orders and order books, and readers who value a public reserve-verification process.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: beginners who want the simplest possible purchase flow, users relying on instant buying, and customers who need a coin or network restricted in their location.

3. Gemini: best for documented controls and compliance focus

Why Gemini stands out

Gemini is a strong comparison for a customer who prioritizes custody structure, security controls, and compliance disclosures over the broadest possible asset list or the lowest entry-level trading fee. Gemini Trust Company says it is a fiduciary and qualified custodian under New York Banking Law and holds a New York limited-purpose trust-company license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini’s Trust Center reports SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 examinations and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. Its listed controls include default two-factor authentication, hardware-key support, and address allowlisting. Those are meaningful controls, but none guarantees that a customer cannot lose money through fraud, compromised credentials, market losses, operational failure, or insolvency. Review the Gemini Trust Center and security information.

ActiveTrader fees

Gemini’s fee schedule effective July 9, 2026 lists entry-level ActiveTrader spot fees of 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker. At the $25,000 tier, the listed rates are 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, with lower rates at higher tiers. Stablecoin pairs have separate pricing. The simpler Gemini interface follows a separate schedule. See the ActiveTrader schedule, Gemini’s general fee page, and its fee explanation.

At the entry-level taker rate, a $1,000 order would mean $12 in commission before the spread and other costs. That does not make Gemini unsuitable; it means a security-focused user should decide whether the controls and custody structure justify the price difference for their use case.

Insurance qualification

Gemini’s institutional custody page lists $25 million of hot-wallet crime insurance and $100 million of cold-storage insurance for certain custody losses. Those figures are product-specific institutional disclosures and should not automatically be described as protection for every retail account. Review the relevant account agreement and Gemini custody disclosure before relying on any insurance claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should and should not use Gemini?

Good fit: users who value documented security programs, hardware-key and allowlisting features, and a regulated trust-company structure.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: fee-sensitive beginners, high-volume traders seeking the lowest published entry-level rates, and users whose desired assets or networks are not supported.

4. Crypto.com: best for an ecosystem of app features

Crypto.com is best viewed as an ecosystem rather than only an order-book exchange. Depending on location and product, it may combine exchange functionality with other app features, payment products, staking, cards, or other services. The exact offering can differ between the Crypto.com app and exchange and between countries.

Crypto.com says customer assets are held 1:1 in reserve accounts and offers proof-of-reserves verification. Its security page lists passkeys, hardware security modules, FIDO2, multifactor authentication, mandatory email verification for address whitelisting, and assessments or certifications including SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27701:2019, PCI DSS, and the NIST framework. These are company disclosures about controls, not guarantees of safety. See Crypto.com security information and its proof-of-reserves page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe Crypto.com’s Mazars proof-of-reserves report as a current 2026 audit. The report is dated December 7, 2022 and covered specified assets. Its scope and date are stated in the report itself and the company’s announcement.

Good fit: users who want multiple features in one app and have confirmed that those features are available where they live.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: users who want a simple, easily comparable order-book fee schedule or who need a particular network available in the exact product they are using.

5. Robinhood Crypto: best for existing Robinhood users

Robinhood Crypto is a broker-style crypto service associated with the Robinhood platform, not simply the same legal and regulatory structure as a dedicated crypto exchange. Robinhood says purchases can start at $1 and that crypto trading is available in every U.S. state, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. Availability can still vary by asset and feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Robinhood Crypto, LLC is separate from Robinhood Financial. Robinhood states that Robinhood Crypto is not a FINRA or SIPC member and that crypto is not FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected. The company also says eligible interfaces can use both market-maker routing and exchange routing. Its exchange-routing fee tiers currently range from 0.00% to 0.95%, but maker/taker rollout may not be complete for every customer or asset. The fee tier does not tell you the complete cost unless you also inspect the quote and spread. See Robinhood’s crypto overview, buying and selling information, and fee-tier disclosure.

Robinhood’s convenience can be valuable for small recurring purchases, but transfer and tax-record details deserve special attention. Robinhood warns that crypto transferred in from another platform may not include its original cost basis and acquisition date. It may initially estimate basis as zero unless the customer supplies the missing information. Read the crypto tax FAQ and transfer information.

Good fit: existing Robinhood customers who prioritize a familiar interface and small minimum purchases.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: users who need deep order-book trading, robust imported tax lots, or the strongest distinction between a broker interface and a crypto exchange.

6. Fidelity Crypto: best traditional-finance alternative for BTC and ETH

Fidelity Crypto is a limited-asset alternative for U.S. individual investors who want direct Bitcoin and Ether access within Fidelity’s broader financial-services environment. Fidelity’s materials distinguish direct crypto ownership and custody from investing through a spot crypto ETP. That distinction matters: Fidelity Crypto may allow direct buying and, where available, transfers, while an ETP provides security-market exposure without giving the investor control of the underlying coins.

Fidelity is not automatically the cheapest option. Confirm current trading costs, spread, supported transfer functionality, asset selection, and state eligibility before choosing it on price. See Fidelity Digital Assets’ trading and custody information, Fidelity’s explanation of ways to invest in crypto, and its crypto-funds information.

Good fit: investors who mainly want BTC or ETH and prefer an established brokerage ecosystem.

Look elsewhere or compare carefully: altcoin traders, users needing broad network support, or customers who specifically want a full crypto exchange with many order books.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other platform types worth considering

Interactive Brokers Crypto

Interactive Brokers Crypto can suit experienced investors who want a brokerage-integrated crypto product and competitive stated trading commissions. Its asset selection is limited relative to a full crypto exchange, and the custody, withdrawal, and transfer experience should be reviewed separately before opening an account.

Uphold and eToro

Uphold and eToro are better understood as broker-style platforms for specialized use cases. Uphold’s appeal is cross-asset functionality; eToro’s is associated with social-investing features. Neither should automatically be treated as an equivalent replacement for a deep crypto order-book exchange. Compare whether you can withdraw the exact asset on the exact network you need, not merely whether the app displays a coin price.

Exchange, broker app, wallet, DEX, or ETP?

The word crypto platform covers several fundamentally different products:

Product What you receive Can you normally withdraw the underlying crypto? Main trade-off
Centralized exchange A custodial account that may match buyers and sellers through an order book or sell through its own infrastructure Usually, subject to asset, network, account, and withdrawal rules Convenience and liquidity in exchange for platform and custody risk
Broker-style crypto app A quoted purchase or sale that may be routed to liquidity providers, market makers, or an exchange Sometimes; support varies by asset and jurisdiction Simple interface, but spreads, routing, and transfer limitations may be less obvious
Self-custody wallet Software or hardware that controls private keys The wallet is designed to send and receive on supported networks You remove an exchange custodian but become responsible for keys, seed phrases, approvals, and transaction mistakes
Decentralized exchange An on-chain protocol accessed through a wallet and smart contracts The traded assets generally remain in your wallet, subject to the protocol and network Smart-contract, liquidity, slippage, phishing, token, and network risks; usually less beginner-friendly
Spot Bitcoin or Ether ETP A security held in a brokerage account that provides price exposure to the underlying crypto No; the investor owns the security, not coins that can normally be sent to a wallet Simpler brokerage custody and reporting, but no direct on-chain use or withdrawal

The SEC explains that spot crypto ETPs hold the crypto asset itself, distinguishing them from futures ETPs. That does not mean the ETP shareholder personally controls or can withdraw the underlying BTC or ETH. Read the SEC’s spot crypto ETP bulletin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare the real cost of buying crypto

Ignore the phrase “commission-free” until you have compared the final amount of crypto received. Your all-in cost can include:

  1. Trading commission: a maker or taker fee, a flat transaction fee, or a percentage charge.
  2. Spread: the difference between the price at which the platform buys and sells, or the difference between your quoted price and the broader market.
  3. Markup or routing cost: especially relevant to broker-style apps and instant-buy products.
  4. Funding fee: ACH may be free while cards or instant payment methods may cost more.
  5. Deposit fee: some fiat rails or currencies carry separate charges.
  6. Withdrawal fee: a platform charge when moving cash or crypto out.
  7. Network fee: the blockchain cost of sending crypto, which may be passed through, marked up, or combined with a platform fee.
  8. Subscription: allocate a monthly membership fee across the trading volume you actually expect to use.
  9. Second-leg cost: selling later can produce another commission and another spread.

A $1,000 comparison example

Suppose you are comparing a $1,000 market purchase. A 0.60% trading fee equals $6; a 0.80% fee equals $8; and a 1.20% fee equals $12. Those numbers are only the stated commission. Add the spread, the funding charge, and any future withdrawal cost. If the platform’s quoted price is 1% worse than a comparable market quote, that difference is $10 on a $1,000 transaction—larger than a $6 commission.

Before confirming an order, record:

  • the market or trading pair;
  • the order type;
  • the amount of dollars spent;
  • the amount of crypto received;
  • the quoted price;
  • the stated fee;
  • the spread, if displayed;
  • the funding source; and
  • the expected withdrawal charge.

Do the same comparison for a sell order. A platform that looks inexpensive when buying may have a wider sell quote or a costly cash-withdrawal method.

Security: what makes an exchange safer, and what does not?

“Safe exchange” is too vague to be useful. Evaluate separate risks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Account takeover: prefer passkeys or hardware security keys over SMS-only authentication, use a unique password, and protect the email account connected to the exchange.
  • Unauthorized withdrawals: look for address allowlisting, withdrawal delays for new addresses, transaction notifications, and multi-approval vault controls.
  • Exchange insolvency: read the customer agreement, custody disclosures, reserve work, financial disclosures, and any statements about lending or rehypothecation.
  • Hot-wallet theft: determine whether commercial crime insurance exists, what event it covers, whether the policy is capped, and whether credential compromise is excluded.
  • Operational failure: separate trading availability, cash withdrawals, crypto withdrawals, fraud reviews, and blockchain confirmation times.
  • Human error: no exchange policy can reverse an irreversible on-chain transfer sent to the wrong address or network.

The SEC’s crypto custody bulletin recommends comparing custody, transaction, transfer, and account-closing fees and using strong passwords and multifactor authentication.

What “insured” means—and usually does not mean

Balance or asset Potential protection What it generally does not cover
U.S. dollars in a qualifying custodial bank account Possible pass-through FDIC or NCUSIF coverage, subject to account conditions and applicable limits Crypto price losses, exchange failure, fraud, or funds held outside qualifying accounts
Crypto held by an exchange A commercial crime or cyber policy may cover certain platform losses, depending on the event, policy, and limit Lost credentials, phishing, unsupported assets, wrong-network transfers, losses above policy limits, and possibly exchange insolvency
Crypto in a self-custody wallet Generally no exchange insurance Lost seed phrase, malware, malicious approvals, wrong addresses, wrong networks, and signing fraudulent transactions
Eligible securities in a brokerage account Potential SIPC protection for eligible securities and cash, subject to SIPC rules Direct crypto held through a separate crypto entity and investment losses from falling prices

Coinbase and Robinhood explicitly state that their crypto balances are not SIPC-protected. Coinbase separately describes possible pass-through FDIC or NCUSIF coverage for qualifying cash balances. Do not turn either statement into “crypto is FDIC-insured.” The asset, account, legal entity, event, and policy determine the protection.

How to buy Bitcoin or Ether safely

The menu labels vary by platform, but this workflow works broadly:

  1. Check eligibility: confirm your country, U.S. state, asset, payment rail, and intended withdrawal network are supported.
  2. Use the official app or website: avoid links in unsolicited messages and verify the domain before signing in.
  3. Complete identity verification: have the required identification and address information ready.
  4. Secure the account before funding it: enable a passkey or hardware security key where available, add multifactor authentication, and save recovery codes offline.
  5. Add a bank account: ACH or a bank wire is often more economical than a card, but settlement and withdrawal holds can apply.
  6. Start small: make a small deposit and small purchase so you can verify the funding and withdrawal process.
  7. Compare the preview: check the asset, amount, payment source, quoted price, spread, fee, and final amount of crypto.
  8. Choose the right order: a market order prioritizes execution but can fill at multiple prices; a limit order executes only at the specified price or better and may not fill.
  9. Save records: retain the confirmation, fee, timestamp, and transaction ID or downloadable account record.
  10. Decide on custody: if you intend to self-custody, test a small withdrawal before moving a larger balance.

How to sell crypto and withdraw cash

  1. Confirm that the correct asset and available balance are selected.
  2. Review whether you are using a simple sell flow or an order-book interface.
  3. Check the quote, spread, commission, and net dollar proceeds before confirming.
  4. Wait for any trade settlement or account review that prevents cash withdrawal.
  5. Withdraw to a bank account in your own name using the platform’s supported ACH or wire method.
  6. Check for minimums, bank-name matching, daily limits, and withdrawal fees.
  7. Keep the sale confirmation for tax records.

Do not confuse a completed trade with immediately withdrawable cash. A platform may allow you to trade while an ACH deposit, card purchase, fraud check, new device, password change, or new withdrawal address remains under review. Blockchain confirmation time is a separate issue from a platform’s internal hold.

How to transfer crypto to a wallet without losing it

Network mistakes are among the most expensive errors a crypto user can make. On-chain transfers are generally irreversible. Coinbase warns that sending on the wrong network can result in permanent loss, and Kraken gives the same network-matching warning in its withdrawal instructions. Review Coinbase’s send instructions and Kraken’s deposit and withdrawal guide.

Use this pre-send checklist

  • Asset: confirm that you are sending the correct coin or token, not a similarly named asset.
  • Network: choose the same blockchain supported by the receiving wallet or exchange deposit screen.
  • Address: copy it from a trusted source and verify the beginning and ending characters. Malware can replace copied addresses.
  • Memo or tag: determine whether the receiving service requires a destination tag or memo, especially for assets and exchange deposits that use shared addresses.
  • Minimum: check the receiving platform’s minimum deposit and the sender’s minimum withdrawal.
  • Fees: review the amount that will leave the exchange and the amount the recipient will receive.
  • Test: send a small amount first, wait for it to arrive, and only then send the rest.
  • Confirmation: save the transaction hash and verify it on the appropriate blockchain explorer.

A wallet address alone does not prove that the receiving platform supports every network associated with that address. A token sent on an unsupported chain may not be recoverable.

How much crypto should stay on an exchange?

There is no safe universal percentage. The right balance depends on the purpose:

  • Trading balance: keeping funds on an exchange is convenient and avoids repeated transfer costs, but exposes you to platform, account-access, and withdrawal risks.
  • Long-term holdings: self-custody may reduce exchange-counterparty risk, but you assume full responsibility for the seed phrase, device security, transaction approvals, and inheritance planning.
  • Small balances: exchange custody may be reasonable if a hardware wallet’s cost and complexity would cause you to make worse security decisions.
  • Large balances: consider separating trading funds from long-term holdings, testing every transfer, using a hardware wallet or other appropriate custody arrangement, and creating a documented recovery plan.

A hardware wallet is not automatically safe. Anyone who obtains its seed phrase can generally control the assets, and a user can still approve a malicious transaction or send funds to the wrong address. Self-custody changes who bears the risk; it does not remove risk.

Taxes and Form 1099-DA for U.S. users

This is general information, not individualized tax advice. For U.S. taxpayers, selling crypto for dollars is generally reportable. Trading one digital asset for another and spending crypto can also be reportable. Transferring crypto between wallets you own is generally not the same as selling it, but you should preserve records proving the transfer and the original tax lots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Staking rewards, airdrops, referral rewards, and other income-producing events can have separate tax treatment. The IRS says taxpayers must report taxable digital-asset transactions whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. For sales after 2025, brokers generally report gross proceeds; basis reporting applies to covered digital assets acquired after 2025 and held through the relevant custodial relationship, subject to the rules and exceptions in the instructions. See the IRS Form 1099-DA instructions, digital-asset FAQ, Form 1099-DA explanation, and digital-assets overview.

An exchange’s tax form may not contain complete basis information for crypto transferred in from another exchange or wallet. Keep:

  • purchase and sale confirmations;
  • CSV exports from every platform;
  • wallet addresses and transaction IDs;
  • transfer dates and amounts;
  • the original acquisition date and cost basis;
  • fees; and
  • records of staking, rewards, airdrops, and gifts.

Staking, lending, margin, futures, and earn products

Do not let an exchange’s extra features determine your basic spot-trading choice without analyzing their separate risks:

  • Staking: may involve lockups, unbonding periods, validator risk, slashing, changing rewards, and additional tax reporting.
  • Lending and yield products: introduce borrower, counterparty, liquidity, and bankruptcy risk. An advertised APY is not bank-deposit insurance.
  • Margin: permits borrowed exposure and can create liquidation losses.
  • Futures and perpetuals: are derivatives with leverage, funding costs, liquidation risk, and potentially rapid losses.
  • Prediction and other products: may be unavailable in some jurisdictions and have their own legal and financial risks.

The SEC warns that crypto platforms combining exchange, broker, lending, and custody functions can create conflicts and additional risks, and that speculative crypto investments can result in total loss. Read the SEC’s guidance on crypto-asset securities and crypto-asset interest-bearing accounts.

What happens if a crypto exchange fails?

There is no general federal guarantee that makes a customer’s crypto whole if an exchange becomes insolvent. The outcome can depend on the platform’s legal entity, customer agreement, custody arrangement, asset records, liens, bankruptcy proceedings, and whether the assets were segregated and recoverable. Proof of reserves does not establish all of those facts.

Commercial crime insurance may cover a defined theft event, but that is different from protection against a platform’s business failure. FDIC coverage generally concerns qualifying bank deposits, not crypto. SIPC protection generally concerns eligible securities and cash at a member brokerage, not crypto held through a separate crypto entity. Read the custody and insurance language rather than relying on a marketing headline.

Questions to ask before opening an account

  • Is the service available in my country and state?
  • Does it support the exact asset and network I need?
  • Can I withdraw that asset to my own wallet?
  • What is the total quoted cost for a $1,000 purchase and sale?
  • Does the quote include a spread or markup?
  • Which interface and fee tier am I actually using?
  • Can ACH deposits or card purchases create a withdrawal hold?
  • Are crypto balances FDIC- or SIPC-protected? If not, what commercial insurance exists and what does it exclude?
  • Are customer liabilities included in the reserve review?
  • Can I verify that my balance was included in the reserve snapshot?
  • Can I use a passkey or hardware security key?
  • Can I allowlist withdrawal addresses?
  • Will the platform preserve tax basis for crypto transferred in from elsewhere?
  • What happens to my assets if the platform suspends withdrawals or enters insolvency proceedings?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest crypto exchange?

No exchange is risk-free, and “safe” depends on which risk you mean. Compare custody disclosures, customer-asset treatment, security-key and allowlisting controls, withdrawal processes, insurance exclusions, reserve-review scope, and the platform’s legal terms. Gemini and Kraken are particularly relevant for readers prioritizing documented controls and transparency; Coinbase is a strong alternative for users who value broad availability and a large public-company disclosure environment. None eliminates market, cyber, fraud, account-takeover, or insolvency risk.

What is the cheapest crypto exchange?

There is no universal answer. Compare the same asset pair, interface, order type, volume tier, funding method, and withdrawal destination. Kraken Pro publishes entry-level spot fees of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, while Coinbase Advanced advertises up to 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker and Gemini ActiveTrader lists 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker at entry level as of the dates covered here. Those commissions do not include spreads, funding, network, or withdrawal costs.

Is Coinbase or Kraken better?

Coinbase is generally the better starting point for a beginner who wants a simple purchase flow and a broad ecosystem. Kraken Pro is generally better for an active spot trader who wants an order book, published Pro tiers, and customer-verifiable proof-of-reserves information. Compare the interface you will actually use; Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro are not equivalent to either platform’s instant-buy flow.

Is crypto insured like money in a bank?

Generally no. Crypto balances are not automatically FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected. A platform may have commercial crime insurance for certain theft events, and qualifying U.S. dollar balances may have pass-through FDIC or NCUSIF coverage under specific conditions. Those protections do not generally cover crypto price declines, wrong-network transfers, lost credentials, or every form of exchange failure.

Is Robinhood a crypto exchange?

Robinhood Crypto is a separate crypto service associated with Robinhood, but it should not automatically be treated as the same type of platform as a dedicated order-book exchange. Robinhood says Robinhood Crypto, LLC is separate from Robinhood Financial, is not a FINRA or SIPC member, and that crypto is not FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected. Routing, spreads, asset support, and transfer features should be reviewed separately.

Can I move crypto off an exchange?

Often, but not always. The asset, network, account status, location, withdrawal limits, minimums, holds, and destination-tag requirements all matter. Confirm the receiving network, send a small test amount, wait for confirmation, and then transfer the rest. An on-chain transaction sent to the wrong address or unsupported network may be irreversible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the buy price different from the sell price?

The difference can reflect the bid-ask spread, market movement, platform markup, liquidity, and a separate trading fee. A broker-style or simple-buy interface may show one all-in quote rather than an order book. Compare the final dollars spent and crypto received, not just the labeled commission.

Why is my crypto withdrawal locked?

Common causes include an ACH, card, or digital-wallet settlement hold; a fraud or identity review; a recently changed password or security setting; a new withdrawal address; account limits; or a blockchain issue. Kraken specifically warns that some first-time ACH, card, or digital-wallet purchases can create a temporary 72-hour withdrawal hold. Trading availability, cash withdrawal availability, crypto withdrawal availability, and blockchain confirmation are separate stages.

Do I owe taxes if I only trade one crypto for another?

For U.S. taxpayers, exchanging one digital asset for another can be a reportable taxable transaction. Moving crypto between wallets you own is generally different from selling, but you should retain records proving the transfer. Staking, rewards, airdrops, and spending crypto can have separate tax consequences. Consult a tax professional for your circumstances.

Should I use an exchange or a Bitcoin ETF or Ether ETP?

Use a centralized exchange when you need direct crypto ownership, on-chain transfers, or use of a wallet. A spot Bitcoin or Ether ETP may be simpler when you only want price exposure through a brokerage account and do not need to send coins. An ETP is a security; it does not normally give you control of or withdrawal access to the underlying BTC or ETH.

What if an exchange fails?

Recovery is not guaranteed. The result may depend on the entity, customer agreement, custody records, segregation, insurance, liens, and insolvency proceedings. Proof of reserves is a dated asset snapshot, not a federal guarantee or promise that withdrawals will always work. Keep only the amount needed for trading on an exchange and understand the custody terms before depositing significant funds.

Can I buy less than one Bitcoin or Ether?

Yes. Crypto platforms generally allow fractional purchases, although minimums vary by asset, payment method, and platform. Coinbase specifically says its minimum purchase amounts vary by asset and payment method; Robinhood says purchases can start at $1.

The Bottom Line

For most U.S. beginners buying BTC or ETH, start with Coinbase—but compare the quoted spread and consider Coinbase Advanced if you understand order-book trading. Choose Kraken Pro when frequent spot trading and transparent fee tiers matter most. Choose Gemini when documented security and custody controls are the priority, Crypto.com when ecosystem features matter, Robinhood Crypto when convenience inside an existing Robinhood account is worth the trade-offs, and Fidelity Crypto when limited BTC/ETH access in a traditional financial environment is the main goal.

Before committing money, check the final order-preview cost, withdrawal network, account-hold rules, insurance exclusions, and tax-record capabilities. The best platform is the one that supports your actual asset and network, gives you a clear all-in price, and matches your custody and trading needs—not the one with the most attractive “zero-fee” headline.
