There is no evidence-based universal “best” crypto exchange in the UK. The right choice depends on what you plan to do: compare the exact firm’s FCA status, the full cost of your transactions, GBP funding and withdrawals, available coins and features, custody risks, and the support you can access. FCA registration is a regulatory check—not a guarantee that your crypto is protected if its value falls or a firm fails.
How should you choose a UK crypto exchange?
Start with your use case, then compare providers against the same needs. A low advertised trading fee may not make a platform cheaper overall if its quoted price, payment charges or withdrawal costs are higher. Likewise, a familiar name or FCA registration does not by itself establish that a platform is suitable or that your assets are protected.
| If you plan to… | Prioritise | Check before opening an account |
|---|---|---|
| Make an occasional first purchase | Clear pricing, a straightforward interface and accessible GBP funding | What price you will actually pay, any payment charge, minimums and withdrawal options |
| Trade frequently | Maker/taker fees, spreads, liquidity and withdrawal costs | The fee tier and trading pair that apply to your account, plus costs for the specific order and withdrawal |
| Buy a particular coin | Asset availability and the ability to withdraw it | Whether withdrawals are enabled for that asset and which network the platform supports |
| Hold crypto for the longer term | Custody arrangements, account security and withdrawal controls | Who controls the private keys, what account safeguards are available and whether you can move your assets off-platform |
These are comparison priorities, not findings that any named exchange performs best. Current, like-for-like provider terms for fees, GBP payment routes, asset support and permission scopes are not established here; check each firm’s live terms before depositing.
How do you compare the full cost?
Compare the same transaction on each platform rather than relying on a headline fee. For a planned purchase or sale, check the quoted execution price or spread, the trading fee, any charge for your GBP deposit method, the crypto withdrawal fee and any blockchain network cost. Include the cost of converting or withdrawing GBP if you expect to cash out.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- For an instant or “simple buy”: check the final quoted amount of crypto you receive for a specific GBP spend, including any displayed fee.
- For an order-book trade: check the applicable maker or taker fee and the likely execution price for your pair and order size. A fee schedule alone does not tell you what price your order will get.
- For a withdrawal: distinguish the platform’s withdrawal charge from any network fee, and confirm the supported network before sending crypto.
Do not call an exchange the “lowest fee” option unless you have compared current terms for the same transaction, payment method, account tier and withdrawal route.
What does FCA registration mean for crypto buyers?
The FCA says firms offering crypto products in the UK must be registered with it or have permission to promote them. Before using a platform, look up the firm on the FCA Financial Services Register and check that the legal entity, activities and contact details match the firm you are dealing with. A similar name is not enough: check the precise firm and the activities shown on its entry. The FCA advises avoiding a firm that cannot be found on the Register.

Registration is not the same as protection against investment loss. The FCA says most crypto-related activities are not regulated in the UK and that investors generally will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection for crypto losses or a firm’s failure. It also cautions that being registered does not guarantee either protection. Crypto can lose its entire value, regardless of the exchange used.
What does the FCA’s consumer research say people value?
In its 2025 wave 6 consumer research, the FCA asked surveyed exchange users about factors they considered when choosing the exchange they used most. Respondents cited ease of use (50%), platform reputation (39%), safety or security (34%) and cost of transacting (30%). These are reported considerations, not satisfaction scores or proof that one exchange is safer, cheaper or better than another.

The same research reported that 73% of cryptoasset users who owned or had owned crypto typically acquired it through a centralised exchange; the base for that question was 1,361 respondents. Among 1,044 users who had used a centralised or decentralised exchange, 61% said they had used Coinbase and 44% Binance. Those are reports of past use, not current market shares or endorsements. How is UK crypto regulation changing?
The FCA published final rules and guidance for its cryptoasset regime on 30 June 2026. According to the FCA, those rules apply to firms granted permission to operate under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA) on or after 25 October 2027. Existing registrations do not automatically become that permission, so do not treat today’s registration as proof that a firm already holds authorisation under the future regime.

The FCA’s overview schedules an application window from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027 for firms seeking to rely on savings provisions. The window is a transition step, not evidence that the new regime is already fully in force. - Verify the firm: search the FCA Financial Services Register, confirm the legal entity and relevant activities, and match the contact details against the firm you intend to use.
- Confirm GBP access: check the deposit and withdrawal methods available to you, their charges, processing times, limits and minimums. Do not assume a route is available just because a provider operates in the UK.
- Price your actual transaction: compare the quoted price, trading fee, payment charge and expected withdrawal costs for the same amount and method.
- Check the asset and route: verify that the coin is available and, if you plan to move it, that withdrawals are enabled on the network you intend to use.
- Review custody and account controls: find out whether the platform holds the private keys, what strong-authentication and withdrawal controls it offers, and how you can access support.
- Decide how much to keep on the exchange: understand the risks of leaving crypto in a custodial account before transferring or holding a significant amount there.
Should you move crypto to a hardware wallet?
A hardware wallet is an optional way to hold crypto outside an exchange account; it is not required to trade and does not protect you from an investment losing value. Moving crypto means choosing the correct destination address and network. With self-custody, you are responsible for protecting the recovery phrase; losing access can mean losing the funds. Ledger’s vendor-authored guides explain the distinction between exchange custody and wallet self-custody, and its February 2024 announcement described a Coinbase Pay integration available in the UK. That announcement does not establish which wallet is best or confirm current model compatibility. See Ledger’s explanation of crypto wallets and its February 2024 Coinbase Pay announcement.
