There is no single best crowdfunding platform for every campaign. For a personal or community fundraiser, GoFundMe is built around donations; Kickstarter is aimed at creative projects and launches and releases funds only if the project reaches its goal; Indiegogo is positioned for creative and technology campaigns, with flexible and all-or-nothing options described by GoFundMe. Compare the campaign fit and the full cost—not just a headline fee or platform-reported fundraising total.
Start with what contributors are funding
Choose a platform based on what people are being asked to do: donate, support a creative project in exchange for a reward, or back a product launch. These are different fundraising expectations, and a service that suits one may not suit another.
- Donation: People give to support a person, family, nonprofit, team, business, club, or other cause. GoFundMe describes its platform as serving these kinds of fundraisers.
- Creative project or reward campaign: Backers help fund a project, often with a promised reward or perk. GoFundMe’s comparison describes Kickstarter as serving creative projects, new products, gadgets, and video games, and Indiegogo as serving creative projects and technology products.
- Product launch: A campaign may function like a pre-sale, but it also creates delivery and fulfillment work. GoFundMe’s comparison says Indiegogo’s InDemand can support product designers after the fundraising phase; confirm current terms and availability before relying on that feature.
These platform descriptions come from GoFundMe’s comparison, so treat them as the platforms’ described positioning rather than an independent assessment of campaign outcomes. The cited material does not establish comparable success rates for these services.
How the three platforms differ
| Platform | Described fit | Funding model or feature | Fee evidence in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoFundMe | Donation-led fundraisers for individuals, families, nonprofits, businesses, teams, and clubs | Donation fundraising; its Giving Guarantee is described as a donor-protection feature, not a guarantee for every donation or campaign | GoFundMe says standard setup and management have no platform fee; payment processing and recurring-donation fees may apply |
| Kickstarter | Creative projects, new products, gadgets, and video games; the comparison says it does not accept charity fundraisers | All-or-nothing: the creator receives funds only if the campaign reaches its goal by the deadline | Kickstarter’s U.S. fee page states a 5% platform fee plus payment processing for a successfully funded project |
| Indiegogo | Creative projects and technology products | GoFundMe’s comparison describes flexible or all-or-nothing funding and the InDemand post-campaign feature | GoFundMe’s comparison lists a 5% platform fee; its pages conflict on the fixed processing charge, so confirm Indiegogo’s current terms |
Platform positioning, funding options, and feature descriptions in this table are from GoFundMe’s April 20, 2026 comparison. Fee details should be checked against current platform terms before launch.

Compare fees using the same assumptions
A headline percentage is not the whole cost. Add the platform fee, if any, to payment processing, including any fixed charge per contribution. Small pledges and recurring donations can have different treatment. Compare using the same country, contribution size, and campaign assumptions; the figures below are not a universal schedule for every market or transaction.
Kickstarter fees in the United States
Kickstarter’s U.S. fee page states that a successfully funded project pays a 5% platform fee plus payment processing of 3% + $0.30 per pledge. For pledges below $10, the page lists discounted processing of 5% + $0.08. If a project is not successfully funded, Kickstarter says no fees are collected. These figures are specific to the United States fee page; check the current page for the terms that apply to your campaign.
Rank #2
GoFundMe fees
In its April 20, 2026 article, GoFundMe says there is no standard platform fee for starting and managing an ordinary fundraiser, while payment processing is 2.9% + $0.30 per donation. Donors may leave optional tips. The article separately lists a 5% fee for recurring donations, so do not assume the ordinary-donation terms apply to recurring contributions.
Indiegogo fees
GoFundMe’s comparison lists a 5% Indiegogo platform fee. Its two cited pages disagree about the fixed payment-processing charge: one gives $0.20 per pledge and the other $0.30 per transaction. Because the figures conflict and are not Indiegogo’s own fee terms, verify the current official schedule before estimating your net proceeds.

Funding model: what happens if you miss the goal?
Funding rules affect whether a campaign can use contributions if it falls short. Kickstarter is all-or-nothing: its described model means a creator receives funds only after reaching the goal by the deadline. That can be important when a project requires a minimum amount to produce or deliver what it promises.
GoFundMe’s comparison describes Indiegogo as offering flexible or all-or-nothing funding. Confirm which option is available for your campaign and what the selected option means for fees, withdrawals, and fulfillment. The cited material does not establish a comparable funding model for GoFundMe, so do not infer one from its donation-led focus.
Rank #4
Check eligibility and practical operations before launch
A good category fit is not enough if your country, cause, or project is ineligible. The cited pages do not provide a complete, current country-by-country eligibility matrix. Before building a campaign, confirm the rules that apply to your location and category, as well as the operational details that determine whether you can carry it through.
- Confirm that the platform accepts your campaign type and country.
- Read current fee and payment-processing terms, including treatment of recurring donations or small contributions.
- Check when funds can be withdrawn and what identity, banking, or verification steps are required.
- For a reward or product campaign, plan the fulfillment workload and understand any post-campaign tools you intend to use.
- Review the scope and conditions of any donor-protection policy. GoFundMe describes its Giving Guarantee as a protection feature; that does not establish that every donation or campaign is guaranteed.
Why platform totals do not identify a winner
GoFundMe’s comparison page displays these cumulative platform totals: GoFundMe, $40 billion raised and 50 million supporters; Indiegogo, $1.5 billion and 10 million; Kickstarter, $3 billion and 15 million. The page does not state a common measurement date or methodology for the figures. They are platform totals as presented by GoFundMe, not a rigorous like-for-like ranking, and they cannot show which service is more likely to succeed for your campaign.

A practical way to choose
- Define the ask. Decide whether you are seeking donations, offering creative-project rewards, or launching a product.
- Match the platform to that ask. Consider GoFundMe for donation-led fundraising, Kickstarter for a creative campaign that can work with all-or-nothing funding, or Indiegogo for a creative or technology campaign where its current funding options and tools fit.
- Model the net amount. Apply the relevant platform percentage and processing charges to realistic contribution sizes, and account for any recurring-donation or small-pledge rules.
- Check eligibility and logistics. Verify country and category access, withdrawal timing, support, and the work required to deliver rewards or products.
- Choose based on campaign needs, not platform totals. Headline cumulative numbers without a shared date and measurement method do not tell you which platform best fits your project.
