There is no single best CrossFit shoe for every athlete: the right choice depends on how much you lift, run, jump, and climb ropes—and on how the shoe fits your foot. Coaches cited by Shape favor a relatively flat, stable base for lifting, balanced by enough flexibility for conditioning. The available coach-backed evidence supports a practical shortlist, not a definitive ranking of ten current models, so the picks below are organized by use rather than padded to match a number.
What to look for in a CrossFit shoe
A CrossFit class can move from squats or presses to jumps, short runs, gymnastics, and rope climbs. A shoe built only for running may feel too soft under a heavy lift; a rigid lifting shoe can be awkward for dynamic conditioning. Shape’s guide describes this mixed demand, while NCFIT’s coach poll considers running, lifting, and rope climbs (Shape; NCFIT).
- Stable platform: Look for a relatively flat sole that feels secure under your midfoot and heel during squats and presses. Kayla Tote, a CrossFit coach quoted by Shape, cautions against a cushioned, springy running-style sole for CrossFit.
- Flexibility and comfort: The shoe should still let you move comfortably through jumps and short runs. A rigid or uncomfortable platform may not suit a varied class.
- Fit for your foot: Stability is useful only if the shoe fits. Shape describes the Nano X4 as better suited to wider feet and the Metcon 9 as its narrow-foot pick.
- Workout-specific features: If rope climbs are frequent, consider grip and upper protection. If running makes up an unusually large share of your training, prioritize comfort in motion; if heavy lifting dominates, a separate lifting shoe may make sense.
Coach-backed CrossFit shoe picks
These options reflect the roles assigned to them by the cited sources. Model generations and availability can change, so confirm that a listing is for the named version rather than assuming its features carry over to newer or older models.
| Model | Best fit for | What the source says | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reebok Women’s Nano X4 Training Shoes | All-around training, especially wider feet | Shape’s overall pick; the reviewed shoe has a 7 mm toe drop, weighs 8.7 oz, and uses a Flexweave upper. Shape quotes reviewer Kristen Geil praising its wide, stable base. | Shape says it may run large. The measurements apply to the reviewed X4, not every Nano version. |
| TYR CXT-1 Trainer | Mixed workouts with lifting and rope climbs | Shape’s runner-up, noted for stability and rope-climb grip; the article gives a 9 mm toe drop. Coach Aimee Cringle praised its combination of stability and flexibility. | Shape cautions that it may be less durable than some other picks. |
| Nike Women’s Metcon 9 | Narrow-foot fit | Shape names it as its narrow-foot category pick. | That fit guidance is Shape’s assessment; individual fit can vary. |
| Nike Women’s Free Metcon 5 | Training with more running | Shape selects it for readers whose workouts include more running. | Shape notes that lifting-heavy athletes may want a separate weightlifting shoe. |
| Nike Romaleos 4 | Lifting-focused sessions | Shape’s lifting-focused pick. | A specialized lifting shoe is not the one-shoe solution for workouts that also require running and jumping. |
| Reebok Nano X3 Adventure | Outdoor workouts | Shape’s outdoor-workout pick. | This is an older version in Shape’s guide; do not assume it is the latest or currently available. |
| Converse Chuck Taylor | Limited-budget use where a flat sole is the priority | Shape reports a coach’s budget suggestion and notes its flat sole. | It is not presented as a purpose-built, durable all-purpose CrossFit trainer. |
| Strike Movements Haze Trainer | Minimalist preference | Shape lists it as a minimalist pick. | Confirm that the model is currently available before choosing it. |
NCFIT’s March 2023 coach poll also names R.A.D., NOBULL, Reebok Nano, and Nike Metcon as coach-preferred shoe families. That poll is historical and does not establish which specific current versions are best; treat it as additional coach preference, not a present-day model ranking (NCFIT).

When a dedicated weightlifting shoe makes sense
If heavy lifts are a central training priority, a purpose-built lifting shoe can provide a different platform from an all-around CrossFit trainer. TYR describes its Men’s L-1 Lifter as having a 21 mm heel-to-toe drop, a wide anatomical toe box, double straps, and a flat, wide sole. Those specifications belong to this lifting model; it is not the TYR CXT-1 CrossFit trainer. The product page is TYR’s official L-1 Lifter listing.
How to choose for your training
- Start with your weekly mix. For varied classes, consider an all-around trainer with a stable base and enough flexibility for conditioning. For running-heavy workouts, prioritize comfort on the move; for lifting-heavy programming, consider whether a separate lifting shoe is appropriate.
- Narrow the fit choices. Use width guidance as a starting point, not a guarantee. Shape characterizes the Nano X4 as better for wider feet and the Metcon 9 as its narrow-foot pick; try the shoe or check the seller’s fit and return terms when possible.
- Check the exact generation. Product names can conceal meaningful version changes. The Nano X4’s weight and drop in Shape’s listing apply to that reviewed shoe, and the Nano X3 Adventure is an older pick—not evidence about current Nano models.
- Match features to your class. If rope climbs are common, give grip and upper durability weight in your decision. If your classes involve frequent short runs and jumps, avoid choosing solely for lifting stability.
- Separate lifting gear when needed. A dedicated shoe such as the Romaleos 4 or TYR L-1 Lifter suits a lifting-focused role; it should not be treated as a substitute for a flexible trainer across every workout.
What the coach evidence does—and does not—establish
Shape’s guide reports that it put more than 25 sneakers through its research and testing, but the publication year is not stated in the cited passage. Its model recommendations and quoted coaches are useful inputs, not proof of a universal ranking. NCFIT’s poll is dated March 14, 2023, so it documents preferences at that time rather than current leadership. None of these sources establishes ten independently verified, current models with comparable evidence; choosing among the supported options by fit and workout emphasis is more useful than treating a numbered top ten as settled fact.
