Nonprofits can use business credit cards, but the right choice depends on who is liable for the balance, how the organization repays it and whether its spending earns useful rewards. A traditional business card may require an individual guarantee; a corporate card may instead emphasize organization-wide controls and staff spending oversight. Neither a $0 annual fee nor a high advertised reward rate guarantees low costs or approval.

Here are eight options identified in NerdWallet’s comparison updated September 29, 2026, along with the practical checks to make before applying. Product terms and nonprofit eligibility can change, so confirm current details with the issuer.

How to choose a nonprofit credit card

Start with the organization’s liability and cash-flow needs, then compare rewards and controls. Nonprofits are not eligible for every business card: Chase says nonprofits are typically eligible to apply, but criteria differ by issuer. NerdWallet reports that Wells Fargo’s Signify Business Cash Card is currently unavailable to nonprofits. Confirm eligibility directly if an application’s business-structure choices do not include a nonprofit.

  • Liability: Ask whether an officer or other individual must personally guarantee the balance, and who is responsible for charges made by staff or volunteers.
  • Repayment: Check whether the card permits revolving balances or requires payment in full. Do not carry a high-interest balance to earn rewards; NerdWallet cautions against using high-interest cards as nonprofit financing.
  • Total cost: Review annual and monthly fees, APR, late and foreign-transaction fees, employee-card fees, and any required deposit. No annual fee does not mean borrowing is free.
  • Reward fit: Match the organization’s actual expenses to eligible categories and account for caps, portals, purchase definitions and redemption rules. Common business-card categories include office supplies, utilities, travel, dining and shipping, according to Chase.
  • Controls: For staff cards, compare individual spending limits, merchant restrictions, receipt collection, real-time visibility, audit logs and accounting integrations.
  • Scale: Multiple users, changing staff or volunteers may make centralized corporate controls valuable. A smaller organization may find a traditional business card more practical if an authorized person is willing and eligible to guarantee it.

Eight nonprofit card options to compare

The options below include conventional business credit cards and corporate purchasing or spend-management products. Their features are not directly interchangeable: check the issuer’s current application and terms for nonprofit eligibility, liability, repayment requirements, rewards and fees.

Card What to know Potential fit
Ink Business Cash Credit Card NerdWallet reports a $0 annual fee, 5% cash back in specified office-supply and internet, cable and phone categories within a combined annual cap; 2% in specified dining and gas categories within a cap; and 1% on other purchases. Its page also lists a promotional offer, which can change. Organizations with eligible office, communications, dining or gas purchases that can stay within the relevant caps.
American Express Blue Business Cash Card NerdWallet reports a $0 annual fee and 2% cash back on eligible purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%; cash back is credited to the statement. Issuer terms apply. Organizations seeking straightforward cash back on eligible spending, especially below the annual reward threshold.
U.S. Bank Business Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card NerdWallet reports a $0 annual fee for the first year, then $95. Higher reward rates apply to specified travel, gas, EV-charging, dining and cell-service purchases, subject to restrictions and caps. Travel-heavy organizations only if the eligible categories and any booking portal match how they purchase.
Ramp Card NerdWallet describes this as a corporate card with no annual fee and rewards of up to 1.5%. Ramp determines the customer-specific rate, so the maximum is not guaranteed. Organizations looking for a corporate-card model and centralized spend management, after confirming their offered reward rate and eligibility.
BILL Divvy Corporate Card NerdWallet positions it as a reimbursement alternative and says rewards vary by category and billing frequency. Exact current rates should be confirmed with BILL. Organizations comparing corporate card controls with reimbursement workflows and willing to assess rewards against billing terms.
Charity Charge Nonprofit Business Card NerdWallet reports that the standard card is intended for nonprofits operating at least two years and meeting revenue thresholds. A secured option requires a deposit of at least $5,000. The source reports no annual fee and vendor rebates; confirm eligibility and terms directly. Blackbaud Purchase Cards Blackbaud describes a U.S.-only product requiring credit approval, with no monthly or annual fees and no personal guarantor required. Capital One Spark Cash Plus NerdWallet lists this among its nonprofit comparison options. What to prepare before applying

Approval requirements vary by issuer, and a suggestion to prepare documents is not a universal application requirement. Capital One says lenders typically review financial history, annual revenue and credit record, and may ask for an EIN or proof of nonprofit status. It recommends organizing recent bank statements, budgets or grant records and showing consistent cash flow.

  1. Confirm the issuer accepts your organization’s legal structure. Ask directly if nonprofit is absent from the application’s business-type choices.
  2. Gather relevant organizational records. Depending on the issuer, this may include an EIN, nonprofit-status documentation, bank statements, a budget or grant records.
  3. Review who is applying and who is liable. Establish whether the application calls for an individual guarantee and what happens when authorized staff make purchases.
  4. Plan repayment and administration. Confirm payment timing, cash-flow fit, staff-card controls and how transactions will be reconciled.
  5. Verify live product terms. Recheck the fee schedule, APR, reward categories and caps, promotional offer, employee-card policies, payment rules and any deposit requirement.

When a corporate purchasing card may be a better fit

A corporate card is worth considering when the organization needs staff-level limits, transaction visibility and a repeatable expense process more than the features of a conventional revolving business card. Blackbaud says its Purchase Cards integrate with Financial Edge NXT nonprofit accounting software. That integration may be relevant for organizations already using that system, but it does not by itself establish the best fit for every nonprofit. Compare the product’s controls, reporting and accounting workflow with the organization’s existing process.

For a traditional business card, evaluate the individual guarantee and how the organization will monitor employee cards. For a corporate product, determine the payment model, approval criteria and controls available to administrators. A corporate label alone does not establish that a card requires no individual liability; check the specific provider’s terms.
