The best convention backpack is the smallest comfortable bag that fits what you plan to carry and complies with every event and venue on your itinerary. There is no universally compliant size: some events allow ordinary backpacks, while others impose strict dimensions or prohibit them. Check the current rules before you buy or pack.
How to choose a convention backpack
Compare bags by policy fit first, then by how they carry the day’s actual load. These are selection criteria, not a ranking: there are no comparable tests here establishing one model as the best.
- Policy fit: Check the bag’s external dimensions, whether backpacks are permitted, and any screening or clear-bag guidance. A stricter venue rule may apply even when the broader event allows bags.
- Comfort: Choose straps and a fit suited to the length of time you expect to carry it. Keep the load manageable for queues, crowded aisles, turns, and seated programming.
- Useful capacity: Leave room for essentials and likely purchases, but avoid carrying a large pack full of unused space.
- Organization and protection: Pockets can help keep small items accessible. A dedicated laptop sleeve is useful if you are bringing a laptop or tablet, but not every attendee needs one.
- Crowd practicality: A compact profile is easier to manage around other attendees than a bulky bag.
Check the rules for every event and venue
Bag policies differ, and separate venues at the same event may have different requirements. The examples below show why it is important to read the current instructions for the exact event and location rather than rely on a general convention-bag rule.
| Event or venue | Published rule | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| D23 at Anaheim Convention Center | D23 Support’s policy, updated August 13, 2026, says bags, backpacks, coolers, and suitcases larger than 24 x 15 x 18 inches are not allowed. Items may be screened, and D23 reserves discretion to disallow items. D23 event policies | Whether your bag meets the dimensions and whether screening or other restrictions affect what you carry. |
| D23 at Honda Center | The event terms set a maximum bag size of 5 x 9 x 2 inches and prohibit backpacks, including mini backpacks. D23 event guidelines | This venue’s backpack prohibition applies even though D23’s Anaheim Convention Center policy allows bags up to much larger dimensions. |
| Anime Expo | Bags larger than 14 x 12 x 6 inches are considered oversized; bags may be inspected. Clear bags are recommended to speed screening. Anime Expo entry information | Dimensions, inspection, and whether a clear bag is practical for your visit. |
| L.A. Comic Con | Its FAQ says backpacks are allowed and asks attendees to bring the smallest bag possible to reduce security delays. L.A. Comic Con FAQ | Check the FAQ for current instructions and bring only the bag you need. |
| Anime NYC | Its FAQ says it does not restrict the type of bag or backpack. Anime NYC FAQ | Confirm the current FAQ before attending; policies can change. |
D23 Support’s “Event Policies & Prohibited Items,” updated August 13, 2026, states: “All persons, bags, parcels, clothing, and other items may be subject to screening/security checks.”

A backpack can carry convention essentials and purchases.
