There is no single best condom for everyone. The right choice depends on whether you want an external or internal condom, material and latex sensitivity, comfortable fit, lubricant compatibility, and the protection you need. CDC says correct condom use can reduce pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risks, but it does not eliminate them.

Which condoms are best?

Choose a condom that is appropriate for the type of sex, fits comfortably and stays in place, is made from a material you can use, and is compatible with your lubricant. Follow the specific package instructions and check the expiry date. There is no comparative product evidence here that establishes a best brand or model.

External or internal condoms

External condoms are worn over the penis; internal condoms are worn inside. Each has its own instructions. Do not use an internal condom together with an external condom, because the combination can cause tearing. CDC’s guidance also says not to reuse an internal condom.

Material and sensitivity

Latex is the most common material for external condoms. CDC identifies polyurethane as an option for people with latex sensitivity or allergy. Evidence and labeling can vary for other synthetic materials, so check the specific product instructions. Natural-membrane condoms may help prevent pregnancy, but CDC says they should not be used to prevent HIV or other STIs.

Fit and comfort

Use the package’s sizing and fit information. A condom should stay in place without discomfort. The sources available do not establish a best model by dimensions or provide a comparative fit study, so brand or size rankings would be unsupported.

What lubricant can you use with condoms?

With latex condoms, use water-based or silicone-based lubricant. Oil-based products can weaken latex. CDC clinical guidance says polyurethane may be compatible with oil-based or water-based lubricant, but check the condom’s label for the particular product’s compatibility.

How much protection do condoms provide?

Condoms reduce the risk of pregnancy and STIs when used correctly and consistently, but they do not provide complete protection. The level of protection differs by infection. Condoms provide less protection against infections that can spread through skin-to-skin contact in areas not covered by the condom.

CDC’s 2024 typical-use failure rate for the external male condom is 13%. This is a general contraceptive-method estimate, not a brand test or a prediction for a particular person or sexual encounter.

How to use and handle a condom

External condoms

  1. Check the expiry date and package condition, and read the product instructions. Do not use a condom with visible damage or a defective package.
  2. Put on a fresh condom before sexual contact. Unroll it to the base of the erect penis, following the package instructions.
  3. Use a new condom for the entirety of each act of vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
  4. After ejaculation, hold the condom at the rim during withdrawal. If it breaks, stop and replace it with a new one.

Internal condoms

Read the insert, check the expiry date, and use lubricant as directed. Use a new internal condom for each act, and do not combine it with an external condom.
