For export-oriented supplier enquiries, start with Alibaba.com, Made-in-China, or Global Sources. For domestic-market price comparisons, consider 1688 only if you can handle payment and China-side receiving and export logistics. Yiwugo and Chinagoods help locate Yiwu-market merchants; DHgate and AliExpress may suit some smaller orders or ready-made goods.
These are starting points, not reliability rankings. Compare written specifications, the contracting company, shipping scope, payment terms, and the full cost to your destination before choosing a supplier.

The distinctions in this table are about use case, not seller quality. A profile or marketplace badge is a lead for further checks, not proof that a seller or a particular order meets your requirements. Alibaba says its buyer workflow includes finding sellers, connecting, placing and protecting an order, paying, and shipping; its Trade Assurance is described as an order-protection service, but coverage depends on the applicable order terms. For a Verified Supplier listing, read the underlying assessment and establish whether the business is a manufacturer or trading company rather than treating verification as a quality guarantee.
How to compare 1688 with Alibaba
A 1688 listing can help you compare domestic wholesale prices, but its listed price is not automatically comparable with an export quote. The domestic listing may not include payment costs, receiving or inspection in China, export handling, or international freight. Eligible payment routes and fees can also depend on the account and market.

Compare the same item and specification, then add every service and delivery cost needed to get it to your destination. An export quote may include services that are outside a domestic listing price; ask each supplier to state exactly what its price covers.
How to get quotes you can actually compare
Send the same product brief to several relevant suppliers. A product category alone is too vague to establish whether quotes cover the same goods. Include the details that affect price, production, and delivery:

- Material, dimensions or capacity, design, finish, and intended use.
- Packaging requirements and the target market.
- Any required customization, labeling, or documentation.
- The destination country and, where known, delivery location.
Ask every supplier to answer the same commercial questions in writing:
- What is the legal company name and business type, and which entity will sign the contract and issue the invoice?
- What are the specifications, and how will production be required to match the approved sample?
- What is the minimum order quantity by design, color, and packaging?
- What are the unit price, tooling cost, and sample charges? Which fees recur?
- What are the production and dispatch milestones, and when does the quoted lead time begin?
- What shipping scope and named destination does the quote cover? What are the carton count, dimensions, and weight?
- How will inspection be done, and what remedy applies if goods are defective or do not match the agreed specification?
- Who receives payment, what are the payment milestones, and do the payment and order fall within any applicable platform protection terms?
What to check before paying
- Match the documents. Compare the quotation, contract or order, and payment beneficiary. If a beneficiary changes unexpectedly, verify the change through a contact method already established with the supplier.
- Put the product standard in writing. Record the approved sample and the criteria production and inspection must meet, including any agreed remedy for nonconformance.
- Check order-specific protection. Read the current platform terms, eligibility rules, and dispute window for the actual order. Do not assume a cross-border wholesale purchase has the same return terms as a local retail order.
- Keep a complete record. Save the original listing, order details, seller messages, payment record, and inspection evidence.
Alibaba’s buyer page, accessed in 2026, describes its marketplace as serving 190+ countries and regions, 40+ industries, and 5,900+ product categories, with 16+ translated languages. These are Alibaba’s own marketplace descriptors, not independent market-size measures; they do not establish that a specific supplier can meet a particular order.

Can you buy directly from a factory online?
You can use marketplace listings to contact businesses that identify as manufacturers, but a listing does not by itself establish who will make, contract for, or fulfil your order. Confirm the supplier’s role and the legal company responsible for the transaction. For customized or production orders, agree the specification and sample in writing, clarify minimums and lead-time milestones, and establish inspection and defect remedies before paying. A trading business may also be the seller; the relevant question is whether the responsible company can meet the agreed terms.
