“Check-cashing app” can mean either a service that reviews a check and sends approved funds to an eligible account, or a bank or payment app that accepts a mobile check deposit. Those are not the same service, and submitting a photo does not guarantee approval, immediate access, or a free transaction.
The available verified terms support a detailed look at Ingo Money, not a defensible ranking of 11 apps. Use the criteria below to compare providers—and confirm each service’s current rules before sending a check.
What counts as a check-cashing app?
A dedicated check-cashing service reviews a check submitted through its app and, if approved, sends the funds to an eligible destination. A bank or payment app may instead offer mobile deposit: you deposit the check into an account, and the provider applies its own funds-availability rules. A mobile deposit is not necessarily an instant cash-out.
Before choosing an app, identify which service it provides and compare the terms that determine whether it will work for your check:

The sources reviewed for this article do not establish current official terms for 11 services, so they do not support an app-by-app “best” ranking. The example below shows why provider-specific terms matter.
Verified example: Ingo Money
Ingo describes its app as a mobile check-cashing service. It reviews submitted checks and can decline them; if a check is approved, the available payout options and timing depend on the destination and the selected service. Read Ingo’s FAQ and fee page for its current terms before submitting a check.

Fees and funding speed
Ingo’s fee page lists standard “Money in Minutes” pricing as follows. These are Ingo’s stated fees, not a market-wide price comparison:
| Accepted check category | Standard expedited fee listed by Ingo |
|---|---|
| Pre-printed payroll or government check of $250 or less | $6 |
| Pre-printed payroll or government check above $250 | 2% of the check amount |
| Other accepted check of $100 or less | $6 |
| Other accepted check above $100 | 5% of the check amount |
Ingo’s FAQ also describes a no-fee option that can deliver funds in 10 days to one chosen eligible account, if the check is approved and is not returned unpaid during that period. The expedited option has a $6 minimum: 2% for payroll and government checks with a pre-printed signature, and 5% for other accepted checks. The fee page lists reduced “Gold Preferred Pricing” for customers with six or more expedited check cashings in the prior 90 days; eligibility and the applicable thresholds are provider-specific, so check Ingo’s live fee table rather than assuming a discount applies.

Ingo says most banks, prepaid card issuers, and PayPal make approved funds available in minutes, while most credit card issuers post payments by the next business day. Those are qualified provider statements, not a guarantee for every check, account, or transaction.
Check types, review, and limits
Ingo says it reviews most check types from $5 up to $5,000. Its stated limits are $5,000 per check, $5,000 total per day, and $10,000 total per month; a linked card, account, or issuer can impose additional limits. Examples of check types it says it may accept include payroll and government checks, business checks, two-party personal checks, insurance and cashier’s checks, money orders, and certain refunds. Acceptance depends on review and the specific check.

Ingo lists reasons a check may not be accepted, including not being made payable to the account holder, an illegible image, certain unusual check types, or risk and verification concerns. A listed check type or amount cap is not an approval promise: confirm the specific check and payout destination in the service before relying on it.
Ingo’s FAQ says the Ingo Money service is provided by Sunrise Banks, N.A. That relationship is specific to Ingo and should not be assumed to describe other apps or the protections for balances held elsewhere.

When will mobile check funds be available?
Availability depends on the service, destination account, check, and review outcome. With a dedicated check-cashing service, an approved check may have a faster paid option or a slower no-fee option. With a bank deposit, funds may be subject to the account’s hold and availability rules.
The Federal Reserve explains that Regulation CC sets maximum permissible hold periods for covered deposits, while providers may make funds available sooner; treatment depends on the deposit and its circumstances. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency cautions that electronic check processing does not by itself mean the money will be available sooner. Check your account’s available balance and terms before scheduling payments against a deposit.
For background, see the Federal Reserve’s Regulation CC overview and the OCC’s guidance on understanding checking-account rights.
How to check a provider before using it
- Read the provider’s current terms. Confirm eligible checks, image and endorsement instructions, limits, fees, review process, payout choices, and how long funds may take to become usable.
- Identify who holds the money. Some financial apps work with partner banks. California’s DFPI advises consumers to find out which bank holds their money and to check complaint records by company name instead of relying only on reviews. Its guidance is general consumer advice, not a finding that any particular app is unsafe.
- Compare the total trade-off. Weigh the actual fee against the slower option, approval risk, account limits, and the time you can wait. If a deadline matters, do not treat an estimated or typical posting time as guaranteed.
Read the California DFPI’s fintech-app guidance for its consumer checklist.

If you have an account, compare its check-deposit or cashing terms before paying for an app. Massachusetts Division of Banks says check-cashing businesses must disclose fees before the transaction and that a bank or credit union will generally be the lower-fee option for cashing or depositing. That is Massachusetts consumer guidance, not a nationwide price guarantee; institutions differ, and a deposit can still be subject to a hold.
