Choose the iPhone 17e for the lowest-priced current iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G if your budget is about $200, or the Galaxy A57 5G if you specifically want Samsung and its US price is competitive.
“Cheap” covers two very different markets in 2026: entry-level phones costing roughly $150–$300, and value phones costing $400–$600. The first group handles essentials; the second avoids many of the compromises that make inexpensive phones frustrating to keep for several years.

The Pixel 10a is the strongest all-round recommendation when you can spend around $500. Google lists it from $499 in the US. Its combination of point-and-shoot cameras, a 6.3-inch display with refresh rates up to 120Hz, compact dimensions and Google’s Android software makes it feel substantially more complete than a typical $200 handset.

Google’s specifications list Tensor G4 processing and Pixel features such as spam protection. The phone is a particularly good fit for buyers who want good everyday photos without manually adjusting camera settings, a smooth scrolling experience and a relatively manageable size.
Why buy it
- Strongest camera-focused choice among the main value options.
- 120Hz refresh can make scrolling and animations feel smoother than the iPhone 17e’s 60Hz display.
- Clean Google software and useful Pixel features.
- More convincing for long-term everyday use than most entry-level phones.
What to consider
Do not buy it specifically for demanding 3D gaming or describe Tensor performance as flagship-class without current benchmark and sustained-load testing. Battery life should be judged using a named, comparable test rather than battery capacity alone. Google Store promotions and carrier offers can also change the effective price.
Check the current Pixel 10a price and storage options.
2. Apple iPhone 17e: best cheap iPhone
The iPhone 17e starts at $599 from Apple, making it $100 more expensive than the Pixel 10a at list price. It is the sensible new-phone choice for existing iPhone users and anyone who depends on iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop, an Apple Watch, a Mac or other Apple services.
The iPhone 17e’s processor, iOS app support and Apple ecosystem may matter more than a specification comparison. Paying more can also be reasonable if switching platforms would mean replacing accessories or changing established family and work routines.
The compromises
- The display is limited to 60Hz, while similarly priced Android phones may offer 90Hz or 120Hz.
- The camera system is less versatile than iPhones with dedicated ultrawide or telephoto cameras.
- It is not automatically the best value for an Android-neutral buyer.
Google’s official comparison lists the Pixel 10a from $499 with up to 120Hz refresh and the iPhone 17e from $599 with a 60Hz display. Choose the iPhone when iOS integration is the priority, not simply because it carries an Apple logo.

3. Samsung Galaxy A57 5G: best Samsung option
The Galaxy A57 5G is the Samsung model to investigate if you want Samsung’s software, ecosystem and service network without paying flagship prices. Current US Samsung buying pages show 128GB and 256GB versions, but the supplied evidence does not establish a reliable live US price. Check the official pages before deciding whether it beats the Pixel 10a on value.

It is a better starting point than Samsung’s cheapest A-series models for buyers who want a more complete midrange experience. The choice makes particular sense if you already use Galaxy Buds, a Galaxy tablet or other Samsung devices.
Do not import Australian or UK prices into a US comparison. Compare the A57’s live US price, storage, display, camera results, update commitment, warranty and network model directly with the Pixel 10a. If the A57 costs as much as or more than the Pixel without a clear advantage, the Pixel is likely the safer value recommendation.

4. Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: best new phone near $200
Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP document lists the unlocked 128GB Galaxy A17 5G at $199.99. It is appropriate for calls, messages, email, maps, social media, streaming and light gaming when the budget cannot stretch to $400 or $500.
The trade-offs are predictable: lower performance, less capable cameras and a greater chance of lag during demanding multitasking or games. In one Tom’s Guide comparison, the A17 delivered 7 hours 52 minutes in that publication’s battery test; that result belongs to its specific methodology and should not be treated as a universal battery-life figure. The same comparison illustrates the gap between an inexpensive phone and a flagship, not a standardized ranking of every budget handset.
The $199.99 figure is MSRP, not a promise of today’s street price. Check whether the version is unlocked, how much storage it has and whether its software support is adequate before buying. At the same price, a reputable refurbished Pixel or iPhone may offer much better cameras and performance, but with more battery, condition and warranty risk.

What does “cheap” mean in 2026?
- Under $200: essentials such as calls, texts and streaming, with major compromises.
- $200–$300: usable everyday phones, but camera and performance quality varies significantly.
- $300–$450: generally better displays, storage, battery life and build quality.
- $450–$600: the strongest new-phone value tier, including the Pixel 10a and iPhone 17e.
- Refurbished: potentially the best hardware per dollar, provided condition and support are acceptable.
A $599 phone is not inexpensive in the same sense as a $199 phone. Buying guides often call it cheap because it costs less than current flagships. Decide whether your real limit is a cash price, a monthly payment or total ownership cost.
New versus refurbished
A new phone gives you a new battery, a full manufacturer warranty, simpler returns, a known configuration and usually a longer remaining support period. It is normally the lower-risk choice for a child, an older adult or anyone who needs the phone to work without troubleshooting.
Rank #3
- Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.
A refurbished recent flagship can instead provide a faster processor, better camera sensors, a brighter or higher-quality display, stronger materials, wireless charging and water resistance. Those advantages can outweigh the appeal of a brand-new entry-level model.
Buy manufacturer-certified refurbished hardware or use a seller that clearly states cosmetic grading, battery-health standards, parts policies, warranty length and return window. Check for carrier locks, eSIM restrictions, missing US 5G bands and an approaching software-support deadline. Never compare a temporary refurbished price with a permanent new-phone MSRP without checking both listings on the same day.
Official places to check include Apple’s refurbished iPhone store and Google Store offers, where certified refurbished Pixel availability and pricing can change.

An unlocked phone costs more upfront but makes switching among carriers and MVNOs easier. A carrier promotion may be cheaper overall only when you already want the required plan and will remain eligible for the entire promotional term.
Read the fine print for:
- Required unlimited or premium plan.
- Trade-in condition and eligibility.
- 24- or 36-month bill credits.
- Taxes, activation fees and financing charges.
- Device-lock period.
- What happens to remaining credits if you leave early.
A phone advertised as “free” may simply have a $0 net device payment after credits. Add the full plan cost, device payments, trade-in value and fees before calling it cheaper than an unlocked phone. Tom’s Guide’s deal guidance also notes this distinction.

Camera
Look beyond megapixels. Daylight detail, skin tones, HDR, night photography, motion capture, selfies, video stabilization, camera-app speed and ultrawide availability matter more. The Pixel 10a is the main camera recommendation here. The iPhone 17e is a strong performance and video-oriented choice within Apple’s lineup, but it is less versatile than more expensive iPhones. The A17 is adequate in good light, not a camera-phone recommendation.
Google’s A-series reputation is supported by budget-camera coverage that still considers the Pixel 9a competitive, but conclusions about the newer Pixel 10a should come from direct testing rather than being copied automatically.
Performance and gaming
Basic use includes messaging, email, maps and social apps. Moderate use adds photo editing, multitasking and navigation. Heavy use includes sustained 3D gaming, emulation, video editing and desktop-style multitasking. RAM, storage speed, thermal throttling, software optimization and game compatibility matter alongside the processor name.

The A17 is not a gaming phone. The Pixel 10a should be considered suitable for ordinary use and casual gaming unless independent sustained-load testing shows otherwise. If gaming is your priority, accept that the phone with the best camera may not be the best purchase.
Battery and charging
Compare screen-on runtime from comparable tests, charging speed, included-charger policy, wireless charging and battery-health controls. A larger battery does not guarantee longer endurance: modem efficiency, screen brightness, software and heat all matter. Results involving 5G, GPS, cameras and games can differ sharply from light Wi-Fi use.
Display
Check OLED versus LCD, refresh rate, outdoor brightness, resolution, screen size, curved edges, always-on display support and, if you are flicker-sensitive, independent PWM testing. The Pixel 10a’s up-to-120Hz display is a meaningful everyday advantage over the iPhone 17e’s 60Hz panel.
Storage
128GB is the practical minimum for most people. Choose 256GB for extensive photos, games or offline video, especially if you plan to keep the phone for years. A 64GB model is best reserved for light users who rely heavily on cloud storage. Check whether microSD expansion is supported and remember that advertised capacity is not fully available to the user.
Durability and repair
Check the IP rating, glass and frame materials, repair program, parts availability, screen-replacement cost and availability of cases and screen protectors. A phone that needs a $200 repair may not be good value, while a cheaper handset protected by a sturdy case can work well for a child.
US network compatibility checklist
Before buying an unlocked or imported phone, verify the exact model number—not merely the product name—for:
- AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon compatibility.
- Required LTE and 5G bands.
- VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling.
- eSIM and dual-SIM behavior.
- Compatibility with your MVNO.
- US warranty coverage.
International models may lack US bands or carrier certifications. Google’s Pixel 10a specifications identify the US model and supported bands; perform the same check for every other phone.

Software support is part of the price
A phone that costs less but reaches its security-update deadline sooner can be more expensive over its useful life. For each candidate, verify the Android or iOS version at launch, guaranteed operating-system upgrades, guaranteed security-update years, the applicable US model and whether carrier versions receive updates at the same time as unlocked versions.
Do not repeat an update-period claim from a forum, comment or retailer listing unless the manufacturer’s current documentation confirms it. Support should be a high-weight buying criterion, alongside camera, battery, performance, display, durability, storage and network compatibility.
Best cheap phone by need
- Best overall: Google Pixel 10a.
- Best cheap iPhone: Apple iPhone 17e.
- Best around $200: Samsung Galaxy A17 5G.
- Best Samsung: Galaxy A57 5G, if its live US price is competitive.
- Best camera: Pixel 10a among these main picks.
- Best for iPhone ecosystem users: iPhone 17e.
- Best for gaming: compare sustained-load testing and chipset performance rather than choosing by camera or brand.
- Best refurbished value: a recent certified-refurbished iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy flagship, after checking battery and support.
- Best for children: a durable, adequately supported phone with a case; the A17 can be sensible when price is the priority.
- Best for older adults: prioritize loud calls, brightness, accessibility, simplicity, battery life and easy support over specifications.
Bottom line
If you can spend about $500, buy the Google Pixel 10a. Choose the iPhone 17e when iOS and Apple integration are worth the higher price. Stay near $200 with the Galaxy A17 5G, but expect clear compromises. Samsung buyers should check the live US price of the Galaxy A57 5G before treating it as a better deal.
