OVHcloud is the strongest budget bare-metal candidate for technically capable users, with its US site showing Game Dedicated servers from $79 per month and Advance Dedicated servers from $98 per month. It advertises unlimited traffic, anti-DDoS protection, and bandwidth options that vary by server range.
That is not automatically the cheapest choice for every buyer. InMotion Hosting is more suitable when managed assistance matters, Bluehost offers a mainstream bundled experience but has a substantial renewal increase, and Liquid Web is better evaluated as a support-oriented provider than as a pure bargain host. For many smaller workloads, a VPS remains better value than a physical server.

A genuine dedicated server is a physical machine whose CPU, RAM, storage, and network resources are assigned to one customer. “Bare metal” usually means the same thing, although some providers use the term for specialized cloud products. Confirm that the offer is a persistent physical server rather than a dedicated virtual machine.

A dedicated-core VPS is not equivalent: it may reserve CPU resources while still running on shared physical hardware. “Cloud dedicated” is also ambiguous and may describe a dedicated host, a single-tenant virtual machine, or a provider-specific product.

Provider analysis
OVHcloud: best cheap bare-metal option
OVHcloud is the clearest budget candidate when the priority is physical hardware per dollar. Its US bare-metal page shows Game Dedicated servers starting at $79 per month and Advance Dedicated servers starting at $98 per month. The provider advertises unlimited traffic, anti-DDoS features, and public or private bandwidth options ranging from 1 to 6 Gbps depending on the range.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That price signal is most useful for administrators who can install and secure an operating system, configure a firewall, monitor services, maintain backups, and troubleshoot failed boots. The $79 Game Dedicated figure should not be treated as the ideal general-purpose web-server configuration without checking its CPU, RAM, storage, location, port speed, setup fee, and support terms.
Best fit: game servers, high-transfer applications, self-managed websites, and developers comfortable with Linux administration.
Weakness: low cost generally means more operational responsibility. “Unlimited traffic” describes the provider’s traffic-billing policy; it does not mean unlimited throughput. Port capacity, congestion, fair-use rules, and traffic restrictions still matter.
InMotion Hosting: best cheap managed US option
InMotion Hosting is better suited to buyers who value onboarding and support over the absolute lowest hardware price. Its US dedicated-server material promotes 1 Gbps unmetered bandwidth, US locations, and onboarding assistance. A regular-price signal of $157.99 per month appears in its pricing material, but the exact plan, hardware, promotion, and billing terms must be confirmed before purchase.

“Managed” does not necessarily mean that the provider will configure every application, tune a database, or repair third-party software. Ask whether the plan includes proactive patching, migration, firewall configuration, backups, emergency intervention, and application troubleshooting.
Best fit: US businesses, agencies, and organizations that cannot justify hiring a full-time server administrator.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThis is why Bluehost should be judged on total commitment rather than the promotional monthly number. A long contract may be reasonable for a stable business, but it is less attractive for a short-term project or a technically skilled buyer seeking the most compute per dollar.
Best fit: small businesses and agencies wanting a familiar hosting ecosystem, bundled services, and a simpler management experience.
Weakness: the promotional term and renewal price materially change the economics.
Liquid Web: best support-oriented option
Liquid Web positions dedicated hosting around managed and unmanaged choices, support, security, and compliance-oriented features. Its comparison page shows a starting figure of $88 per month, but that number requires product-level verification before it can be compared with a normal managed dedicated server. Check the exact hardware, billing term, management tier, introductory conditions, and renewal price.
Liquid Web may justify a higher total cost when downtime, recovery work, or compliance requirements are more expensive than the monthly difference between providers.
Best fit: organizations needing premium support or a provider with a stronger operational-services focus.
Weakness: it should not be selected as the cheapest provider based solely on an unqualified starting price.

Dedicated server or VPS?
A VPS is usually better value for one or several ordinary business websites, low-to-moderate traffic WordPress sites, early-stage SaaS products, development, staging, and workloads with unpredictable demand. VPS hosting also commonly makes snapshots, resizing, and managed operations easier.
Dedicated hardware becomes easier to justify when the workload has sustained CPU demand, a large database requiring consistent disk and memory performance, game-server latency requirements, high traffic with noisy-neighbor concerns, media transcoding, continuous-integration runners, virtualization, or physical-isolation requirements.
Dedicated does not automatically mean faster. A modern VPS on newer hardware can outperform an old dedicated server. Measure CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk I/O, network usage, and latency before upgrading.
A practical decision test
- Choose a VPS if average utilization is low or demand changes sharply.
- Choose dedicated hardware if sustained resource contention is already affecting users.
- Choose managed hosting if a serious incident would exceed the cost of professional assistance.
- Choose unmanaged hosting only if you can secure, monitor, back up, and recover the system yourself.
Managed versus unmanaged hosting
With unmanaged hosting, the customer normally handles OS updates, firewall configuration, SSH hardening, web and database services, monitoring, backups, malware response, incident recovery, and performance tuning. This is usually the lowest-cost route but requires real administration skills.
Managed plans may include some combination of OS updates, hardware monitoring, service restarts, migration, control-panel support, backup configuration, and security assistance. The word “managed” has no universal scope. Before buying, ask:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Does support include application troubleshooting or only hardware and the operating system?
- Are backups included, configured, and independently restorable?
- Is proactive patching included?
- Are phone, chat, and ticket support available?
- Are emergency interventions billed separately?
- Does root access limit the provider’s support obligations?
For a small business, a few hours of system administration can cost more than the monthly difference between an unmanaged and managed server.
Hardware checklist
Compare the actual configuration rather than counting cores. A newer eight-core processor may outperform an older 16-core Xeon for many web and application workloads.
- CPU generation, architecture, physical cores, threads, and sustained performance
- ECC RAM, capacity, and upgradeability
- NVMe, SATA SSD, or HDD storage
- RAID level, hot-swap capability, and replacement procedure
- Remote console, KVM, or IPMI availability
- IPv4 and IPv6 availability
- Virtualization support
- GPU availability for relevant workloads
- Hardware replacement times and data-recovery policy
Low RAM is particularly risky for databases, Docker workloads, search engines, control panels, and virtualization. A server that looks cheap may become expensive after adding memory, storage, backups, or a commercial control panel.

Port speed, transfer allowance, latency, peering, DDoS mitigation, and egress billing are separate issues. A 1 Gbps port is a throughput ceiling, not a promise that users will always experience that speed.

“Unmetered” generally means the provider does not charge by transfer volume under the plan’s conditions. “Unlimited” may still be subject to a capped port, fair-use rules, congestion, acceptable-use restrictions, or traffic-type limits. OVHcloud’s exact public port speed and DDoS coverage vary by server range.
Also check the IPv4 allocation. One IPv4 address may be included while additional addresses cost extra or require justification. IPv6 support is valuable but does not replace IPv4 when legacy clients or third-party services require it.
First-year and renewal cost
Use this calculation before comparing plans:
First-year cost = (12 × monthly price) + setup fee + IPv4 charges + licenses + backup fees + management fees + taxes
Then calculate:
Second-year cost = (12 × renewal monthly price) + recurring add-ons + taxes
Label the billing term beside every price. A 36-month promotional rate is not directly comparable with month-to-month pricing. Bluehost’s published $129.19 price and $176.79 renewal signal demonstrate why both figures belong in the comparison.
Also account for cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, Windows Server, CloudLinux, backup software, malware protection, and remote-management licenses. A self-managed Linux stack can be much cheaper than a managed cPanel deployment on identical hardware.
Security and disaster recovery checklist
An unmanaged dedicated server gives you more control and more responsibility. At minimum:
- Use SSH keys and disable password login where appropriate.
- Apply operating-system and security updates promptly.
- Configure both a host firewall and provider-side network controls where available.
- Use separate least-privilege accounts instead of sharing root credentials.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, logs, certificates, and service health.
- Maintain encrypted off-server backups.
- Test restoration instead of assuming a backup is usable.
- Document an incident contact and recovery procedure.
- Confirm what the provider’s DDoS protection actually covers.
RAID is not a backup. It can help maintain availability after some disk failures, but it does not protect against ransomware, accidental deletion, corruption, operator error, or account termination. Check retention, restore fees, encryption, cross-region replication, recovery-point objectives, and recovery-time objectives.
Location and support considerations
Data-center location affects latency, data residency, taxes, regulatory obligations, support hours, peering, and disaster-recovery design. US users may prefer a US facility even when European bare metal offers more hardware per dollar.
Before ordering, check account-verification requirements, abuse-response procedures, outage communication, rescue mode, remote console access, reinstall options, and hardware-replacement policy. A provider that only supports the physical machine may not help with a broken application, database, or firewall rule.

Other providers to investigate
Hetzner, Hostwinds, InterServer, and IONOS can be relevant alternatives, but current 2026 prices, inventory, setup fees, hardware, and support terms were not established by the supplied evidence. Do not rank them by an unverified price. Confirm the official checkout configuration before treating any of them as a current bargain.
Final buying advice
- Define the workload and measure current CPU, RAM, I/O, and network use.
- Decide whether you need a physical server or simply predictable resources.
- Choose managed or unmanaged service based on your actual administration capacity.
- Compare equivalent hardware, locations, ports, backups, and support terms.
- Calculate first-year and second-year cost, including renewal and add-ons.
- Confirm backup restoration, remote console access, DDoS scope, and hardware replacement.
- Verify the final price, currency, taxes, stock, setup fee, and contract at checkout.
For a technical buyer seeking low-cost bare metal, start with OVHcloud’s exact available configuration. For a US business that values assistance, compare InMotion’s managed scope and total price. Consider Bluehost when the bundled ecosystem and long-term commitment are worthwhile, and Liquid Web when support and operational risk matter more than the lowest monthly figure. If none of those advantages solves a specific problem, a VPS is probably the more economical choice.
