For most U.S. shoppers, the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is the safest cheap 5G choice. Its $199.99 unlocked MSRP, mainstream carrier support, expandable-storage appeal and stronger software-support story make it a better long-term buy than many phones with similar specifications. Choose the Motorola Moto G (2026) instead if smooth everyday performance matters more than update longevity. Around $300, the CMF Phone 2 Pro, Motorola Moto G Power (2026) and Samsung Galaxy A26 5G offer better screens or hardware—but the CMF model requires especially careful carrier checking.
This guide covers U.S. phones and prices available or documented in 2026. “Cheap” means below $200, value models from $200 to $300, and clearly labeled stretch choices above that range. Retail prices, promotions, storage versions and carrier compatibility can change.

What counts as a cheap 5G phone?
Price alone is a poor definition. A $150 handset with 64GB of storage, short support and incompatible network bands can cost more over its useful life than a $200–$250 unlocked phone.

Best cheap 5G phones, explained
Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: best overall under $200
The Galaxy A17 5G is the default recommendation for most buyers. Samsung lists an unlocked U.S. MSRP of $199.99 and sells a 128GB unlocked version through its U.S. store: product page and purchase page.
Its advantage is balance rather than a single spectacular specification: familiar One UI, Samsung ecosystem integration, expandable-storage appeal and a stronger low-cost software-support reputation than many Motorola alternatives. That matters if you plan to keep the phone for several years.
- Buy it for: general use, parents, older users, Samsung loyalists and long ownership.
- Expect: adequate rather than fast performance, serviceable daylight cameras and ordinary charging.
- Skip it for: demanding gaming, best-in-class low-light photography or very fast charging.
Verify the exact U.S. model’s storage, NFC, eSIM, bands and update terms before ordering; support can differ by model, carrier variant, region and purchase date.
Motorola Moto G (2026): best speed and screen value under $200
Independent testing places the regular Moto G (2026) around $199 and calls it one of the strongest phones below $200: Tom’s Guide review. It is the better answer when you want a phone to feel responsive and smooth at the lowest price.
Its 5G support, large high-refresh display and everyday performance are compelling for browsing, streaming and social apps. The trade-off is less generous or predictable software support than Samsung’s comparable A-series phones, along with less consistent camera processing and possible carrier-specific software.

- Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac: Stay connected with others wirelessly and stream content at high speeds.
- 6.6" AMOLED Display: View vivid content on a large, high-resolution screen.
- Quad Camera Array: Capture stunning photos and 4K video with the advanced camera system.
- Long Battery Life: Power through the day on a large 5000mAh battery.
- Buy it for: apparent speed, screen smoothness and maximum value below $200.
- Skip it for: long-term updates, Samsung features or the most reliable camera results.
Do not confuse the regular Moto G with Moto G Play, Moto G Power or Moto G 5G. Confirm the model number and use Motorola’s carrier-compatibility checker.
CMF Phone 2 Pro: best enthusiast value near $300
The CMF Phone 2 Pro stands out with a 6.77-inch 120Hz adaptive AMOLED display and ambitious hardware for its price, according to Nothing’s product information: U.S. product page. Nothing also publishes support information here: support page.
It is appealing to technically confident unlocked shoppers who value display quality, design and performance. U.S. network-band, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM support require careful checking, however. Independent testing found strong performance but camera output below the best camera-focused phones: TechRadar’s testing.
- Buy it for: AMOLED quality, 120Hz smoothness and distinctive hardware.
- Skip it for: hassle-free Verizon or prepaid compatibility, or if camera reliability is your priority.
Motorola Moto G Power (2026): best for battery focus and a large display
Motorola announced a $299.99 U.S. unlocked MSRP, a 6.8-inch 120Hz FHD+ display and a high-brightness mode rated up to 1,000 nits: official announcement. Those features make it a sensible stretch choice for travelers, outdoor users and heavy streamers.
A large battery does not guarantee long runtime: processor efficiency, brightness, refresh rate and network conditions matter. The phone’s size and weight may also be uncomfortable, and its camera and update policy should not be assumed to match Samsung or Google.

Samsung Galaxy A26 5G: best Samsung upgrade near $300
The A26 is a clear display step up, using a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel: Samsung product page. Its unlocked 128GB MSRP is $299.99. Choose it when an FHD+ AMOLED screen and stronger overall hardware justify spending more than the A17.
At full price it can be a poor deal if a higher-tier phone is discounted nearby. Check the exact U.S. storage and expansion configuration rather than assuming every regional A26 is identical.

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G: buy only when heavily discounted
Samsung introduced the A16 5G in the U.S. on January 9, 2025: launch announcement. Its March 2026 unlocked MSRP is $169.99. It is reasonable for basic use, a child or an emergency replacement when substantially cheaper than the A17.
Promotions can be conditional. One reported AT&T offer priced it at $29.99 with a new prepaid line, not as a normal unlocked price: deal coverage. Read activation, refill, financing and lock requirements.
What to check before buying
5G and carrier compatibility
5G does not automatically mean faster service. Speed depends on local coverage, spectrum, congestion, signal strength, supported bands and your plan. Budget phones commonly support sub-6GHz 5G but may omit a carrier’s specialized or fastest bands.
Rank #4
- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²
- MEMORIES MADE PICTURE PERFECT: Capture every angle in stunning clarity, from wide family photos to close-ups of friends, with the triple-lens camera on Galaxy A17 5G.
- NEED MORE STORAGE? WE HAVE YOU COVERED: With an improved 2TB of expandable storage, Galaxy A17 5G makes it easy to keep cherished photos, videos and important files readily accessible whenever you need them.³
- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
An unlocked label does not guarantee universal compatibility. Confirm the exact model number supports your carrier’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and—if needed—eSIM. AT&T’s comparison page illustrates that carrier-specific versions can have different configurations: AT&T device comparison.
Software support
Compare Android-version upgrades, security-patch duration, update frequency, the Android version shipped, bloatware and the manufacturer’s delivery history. Samsung’s A-series support strategy is a major reason to favor the A17 or A26, but do not repeat a generic “six years” claim without checking the specific U.S. model’s current terms.
Display
Compare OLED or AMOLED against LCD, HD+ against FHD+, 60Hz against 90Hz or 120Hz, outdoor brightness, glass protection, size and weight. Refresh rate improves scrolling smoothness; it does not by itself prove better image quality or battery life.
Cameras
Megapixels are not a camera score. Sensor size, stabilization, autofocus, HDR and night processing matter more. Cheap phones are generally acceptable in daylight but weaker with moving subjects, indoor scenes, low light and stabilized video. Treat an ultrawide as useful only after checking its sensor and real-world results.
Battery, charging and durability
Battery capacity is only one input. Charging speed, charger inclusion, screen efficiency and processor behavior determine convenience. Wireless charging is uncommon at this price. Distinguish an IP certification from a water-repellent coating or splash test, and never call a budget phone waterproof; liquid damage may remain outside the warranty.

Storage and overlooked features
Prefer 128GB for a 2026 primary phone. Check whether microSD uses a shared SIM slot and whether apps can move to it. Also verify NFC for contactless payments, eSIM, dual-SIM support, the headphone jack, fingerprint-reader location, face-unlock security, USB-C capabilities, Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth version and hearing-aid compatibility. These features vary by exact U.S. SKU.

| Buying unlocked | Buying through a carrier |
|---|---|
| Higher upfront cost but easier to switch carriers and resell | Lower effective price or free-phone promotion |
| Must verify bands, VoLTE, eSIM and carrier features | May require a new line, activation, trade-in, financing or prepaid service |
| Usually fewer carrier restrictions | Often carrier-locked for a defined period |
Compare total cost, not the headline price. A $29.99 phone may require a new line and months of service, while a $199.99 unlocked model has no promotional obligation. Boost Mobile’s 2026 announcement confirms the A17 is in its affordable-device lineup, but availability and terms still depend on the carrier: Boost announcement.

Final buying checklist
- Confirm the exact model number, U.S. edition, storage capacity and unlocked or carrier designation.
- Check your carrier’s compatibility database before opening the box.
- Price the phone, required plan, activation, financing and accessories together.
- Prefer 128GB storage and at least 6GB of actual RAM where available; virtual RAM borrowed from storage is not equivalent.
- Read the model-specific Android and security-support terms.
- Budget for a USB-C charger, case, screen protector and—if supported—a microSD card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are cheap 5G phones worth buying?
Yes, if you choose adequate storage, verify carrier compatibility and value software support rather than buying solely on the lowest sticker price.
Is 5G important on a $200 phone?
It can help where your carrier has strong compatible coverage, but congestion, bands and plan priority often matter more than the 5G logo.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I buy unlocked?
Buy unlocked for carrier flexibility and easier resale; choose a carrier deal when its required line, activation and lock period still make the total cost lower.
Is 64GB enough?
It can work for a basic backup phone, but 128GB is the safer minimum for most primary phones in 2026.
Will every listed phone work on Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile?
No. Compatibility depends on the exact U.S. SKU, bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and carrier certification. Check before purchase.
