Best CD Rates of April 2026: Up to 4.20% APY (Historical Snapshot)

CD rates reached up to 4.20% APY in April 2026, but the best offer depended on the term, deposit minimum, insurance, liquidity and account type. Here is the historical rate snapshot and how to evaluate it.

Important date note: This is a historical snapshot of rates reported during April 2026, not a live rate table. As of August 9, 2026, the rates below may no longer be available. For current offers, check the latest Bankrate CD-rate comparison and NerdWallet CD-rate comparison before applying.

CD rates reached as high as 4.20% APY during April 2026, but there was no single universally best CD. Bankrate’s April 15 report identified Mountain America Credit Union at 4.20%, while NerdWallet’s April 28 snapshot identified Newtek Bank’s nine-month CD at 4.20%. Forbes also included 4.20% brokered CD offerings in its historical research.

The best choice depended on more than the headline APY: the term, minimum deposit, FDIC or NCUA insurance, membership requirements, early-withdrawal penalty, maturity rules and whether the account was a direct CD or a brokered CD all mattered.

Best April 2026 CD rates at a glance

Best CD rates by term in Bankrate’s April table

Bankrate’s term comparisons were updated between April 8 and April 14, 2026. The table below preserves the leading offers it listed for the standard terms. These are historical comparisons, not guarantees that every offer was available nationwide or to every applicant.

Term Leading offer APY Minimum deposit Important trade-off
3 months Popular Direct 3.90% $10,000 Higher minimum than many small savers can meet
3 months Quontic Bank 3.85% $500 Lower minimum, but slightly lower APY
3 months Bask Bank 3.85% $1,000 Requires twice the Quontic minimum
6 months Popular Direct 4.10% $10,000 Top listed rate required substantial cash
6 months Limelight Bank 4.08% $1,000 Small difference in APY compared with the $10,000 option
6 months E*TRADE 4.05% $0 Useful for savers who need a low or no minimum
1 year E*TRADE 4.10% $0 Rate and eligibility should be rechecked before applying
1 year Popular Direct 4.05% $10,000 Higher rate than some alternatives, but a large minimum
1 year Limelight Bank 4.03% $1,000 More accessible than the $10,000 offer
3 years E*TRADE 3.95% $0 Long lock-up period despite no minimum
3 years Sallie Mae 3.95% $2,500 Matches the leading APY but requires more cash
3 years Marcus by Goldman Sachs 3.90% $500 Lower APY with a relatively low minimum
5 years Sallie Mae 4.00% $2,500 Highest listed five-year rate, but funds are locked longer
5 years E*TRADE 3.95% $0 No minimum, but a slightly lower APY
5 years Marcus by Goldman Sachs 3.90% $500 Lower rate with a lower entry point

What these term rankings mean

  • Best listed six-month rate: Popular Direct at 4.10% APY, although its $10,000 minimum makes it unsuitable for many savers.
  • Best no-minimum choices: E*TRADE appeared at 4.05% for six months, 4.10% for one year and 3.95% for five years in Bankrate’s historical table.
  • Best listed five-year rate: Sallie Mae at 4.00% APY with a $2,500 minimum.
  • Best small-deposit three-month alternative: Quontic Bank at 3.85% APY with a $500 minimum, based on Bankrate’s table.
  • Best choice for a particular reader: Usually the highest insured rate for the date the money will be needed, rather than the highest rate in the entire table.

Why different websites named different “best” CDs

The 4.20% headline rate appeared in several forms because comparison sites used different research dates, institutions, terms and eligibility rules.

  • Bankrate identified Mountain America Credit Union at 4.20% APY in its April 15 report. Its main featured bank and credit-union selections generally topped out at 4.15%, including LendingClub and Bread Savings.
  • NerdWallet later listed Newtek Bank’s nine-month CD at 4.20% APY as of April 28. It also listed LendingClub’s 11-month CD at 4.15% and Bread Savings’ nine-month CD at 4.15%.
  • Forbes Advisor analyzed 458 CD and share-certificate accounts from 148 financial institutions and included both direct CDs and brokered CDs in its research. Its historical page showed 4.20% brokered CD offerings through Vanguard for certain terms.
  • Fortune published a separate April 1 rate snapshot that also identified a top offer of up to 4.20%.

Those results are not contradictory. A credit-union certificate, a direct bank CD and a brokered CD are different products. The term, minimum deposit, membership eligibility, liquidity and insurance structure can all change which one is best.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bankrate’s own April report also listed a broad range of products, including LendingClub at 3.40%–4.15%, Bread Savings at 3.80%–4.15%, E*TRADE at 3.95%–4.10%, Capital One at 3.20%–4.10%, Popular Direct at 3.30%–4.10%, Limelight Bank at 3.30%–4.08%, Marcus by Goldman Sachs at 3.85%–4.05%, First National Bank of America at 3.60%–4.05%, Synchrony Bank at 3.70%–4.00%, Sallie Mae at 3.20%–4.00% and Colorado Federal Savings Bank at 3.50%–4.00%. The ranges covered different terms, so they should not be treated as competing rates for one identical CD.

What 4.20% APY actually means

A certificate of deposit is a deposit account in which you agree to leave money at a bank or credit union for a defined term in exchange for a stated return. The core comparison points are the term, APY, minimum deposit, insurance and early-withdrawal rules. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s CD explanation describes these basic features.

APY means annual percentage yield. It annualizes the return and reflects the account’s interest rate and compounding frequency. Deposit-account advertisements use APY under federal disclosure rules; the CFPB’s APY definition and APY calculation rules explain how compounding is incorporated.

A 4.20% APY does not mean that a six-month CD pays 4.20% of the principal in six months. APY is an annualized figure. For example, if $10,000 remained in an account for a full year at a fixed 4.20% APY, the illustrative interest would be approximately $420. If that annual yield were maintained for two years and compounded annually, the illustrative interest would be approximately $857.64. Actual maturity proceeds depend on the CD’s exact term, compounding schedule, interest-payment option and account agreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check whether interest remains in the CD. A bank may credit interest monthly but let you transfer it to another account. If the interest is paid out rather than left on deposit, it may not compound in the CD even though the advertised APY assumes the stated compounding conditions.

Is the 4.20% CD available to everyone?

No. The April 4.20% offers involved different providers and products.

Mountain America is a credit union, so eligibility may depend on membership rules, a qualifying affiliation, location or another requirement. Its certificate-rate page is the appropriate place to verify current terms, minimums and membership conditions. A credit-union share certificate should also be checked for federal NCUA insurance.

Newtek’s 4.20% offer was reported for a nine-month term in NerdWallet’s April 28 snapshot. That does not establish that the same rate remains open, that every applicant qualifies or that the product has the same minimum and penalty as another bank’s CD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vanguard’s historical 4.20% entries were brokered CDs, not ordinary CDs opened directly with Vanguard as the issuing bank. They belong in a separate comparison because their liquidity and pricing work differently.

FDIC and NCUA insurance: the limit is not simply “$250,000 per account”

A CD at an FDIC-insured bank is generally insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The FDIC’s ownership-category guidance explains how accounts are aggregated.

A federally insured credit union’s share certificate is generally protected through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund up to $250,000 per member-owner, per insured credit union, per ownership category. See the NCUA’s share-insurance guidance for the applicable rules.

Insurance applies to the institution and legal ownership structure, not merely the label on each account. For example, several single-owner CDs at the same bank are generally combined with other single-owner deposits at that bank. A $250,000 deposit can also exceed the limit once accrued interest is included.

If you have more than the applicable limit, review the ownership categories and the legal entities carefully. Using separate insured institutions may provide additional coverage, but simply opening multiple CDs at one institution does not automatically multiply the limit. For a brokered CD, confirm the issuing bank and how the brokerage records the deposit before assuming the entire balance is covered.

Early-withdrawal penalties can make a high APY a poor fit

Traditional CDs usually restrict access until maturity or impose an early-withdrawal penalty. Depending on the contract, the penalty may consume some interest and may affect principal. The exact formula varies by institution and term, so an APY table cannot tell you the real cost of breaking the CD.

Before depositing money, find the account disclosure and check:

  • Whether early withdrawal is allowed at all.
  • Whether the penalty is measured in days or months of interest.
  • Whether the calculation uses the original rate, current rate or another formula.
  • Whether the penalty can reduce principal.
  • Whether partial withdrawals are permitted.
  • Whether the account offers no-penalty, bump-up or callable features instead.

Do not place emergency savings, rent money, a tax payment or funds needed for an uncertain near-term expense into a conventional CD solely because its APY is slightly higher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when a CD matures?

Many CDs automatically renew unless you provide instructions during a grace period. The renewal rate is usually the rate available for the new term at maturity, not the promotional or original rate. Bankrate and Forbes both caution readers to review renewal provisions rather than allowing an account to roll over automatically.

Record these details when you open the CD:

  1. The maturity date.
  2. The length of the grace period.
  3. Whether the principal and interest renew together.
  4. Whether you can withdraw interest while renewing principal.
  5. How the bank handles instructions received late.
  6. The standard renewal APY and term, if disclosed.

A promotional CD can be especially easy to overlook. A high introductory APY may renew into an ordinary CD with a materially lower rate if you do nothing.

Promotional and specialty CDs

No-penalty CDs

A no-penalty CD generally allows withdrawal before maturity without the ordinary early-withdrawal penalty, subject to the product’s conditions and any initial waiting period. The trade-off is that the APY may be lower than the best conventional CD. This option can suit money with an uncertain use date.

Bump-up CDs

A bump-up CD can allow you to request a higher APY if the institution raises rates during the term. The initial rate may be lower, and the bump may be limited to one use or to particular terms. Do not assume that a bump-up feature automatically produces a better return than locking a competitive fixed rate today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add-on CDs

An add-on CD permits additional deposits during the term. These accounts may have special funding rules or lower rates. They can be useful if you expect to save more money gradually, but compare the APY with a regular CD plus a savings account.

Promotional CDs

Promotional CDs often have unusual maturities, new-money requirements, geographic limits or automatic-renewal terms. Bankrate’s April examples included:

Institution Promotional term APY
Wells Fargo 4 months 3.49%
U.S. Bank 5 months 3.50%
Bank of America 7 months 3.25%
PenFed Credit Union 15 months 3.10%

These promotional figures were reported as of March 31, 2026 and could vary by region or include additional restrictions. A promotional term can be useful when its maturity matches a known expense, but compare its total dollar return and renewal terms rather than focusing only on the unusual APY label.

Direct bank CDs, credit-union certificates and brokered CDs

Direct bank CDs

You open a direct bank CD with the issuing bank. The bank’s account agreement controls the maturity date, interest payments, early-withdrawal penalty and renewal process. Confirm that the issuing institution is FDIC-insured and that your total deposits remain within the applicable coverage limits.

Credit-union share certificates

A credit union may call its equivalent of a CD a share certificate. You may need to become a member, maintain a small share-account balance or satisfy another eligibility condition. Confirm that the credit union is federally insured by the NCUA or understand what state-level insurance applies before depositing money.

Brokered CDs

A brokered CD is purchased through a brokerage rather than opened directly with the issuing bank. It may not have a conventional early-withdrawal penalty, but accessing the money before maturity generally means selling the CD in the secondary market. The sale price can be lower than the amount paid if interest rates or market conditions change.

That makes a brokered CD different from a direct bank CD even when both advertise the same APY. Forbes Advisor’s historical April research included Vanguard brokered CDs at 4.20% for certain longer-term offerings. Treat those as a separate category and verify the issuing bank, maturity, call provisions, market value, commissions and insurance allocation.

How to choose the right CD

  1. Start with the need date. Choose a maturity that occurs before you need the money. If the date is uncertain, consider a shorter term, a no-penalty CD or a ladder.
  2. Separate emergency money. Keep funds needed for ordinary spending or unexpected bills in a liquid account rather than a conventional CD.
  3. Set the minimum-deposit ceiling. A $10,000 minimum may make a 4.10% CD impractical when a 4.05% no-minimum account lets you keep more cash available.
  4. Verify insurance. Confirm FDIC or NCUA coverage and total your existing deposits at the same institution and ownership category.
  5. Read the penalty clause. Compare the penalty with the likely benefit from the higher APY.
  6. Check the account type. Determine whether it is a direct CD, share certificate, brokered CD or IRA CD.
  7. Review interest payments. Find out whether interest compounds, is paid monthly, or is transferred to another account.
  8. Plan for maturity. Set a calendar reminder well before the grace period ends.

Practical decision matrix

Your situation Likely fit
Emergency fund High-yield savings account or money market deposit account
Known expense in three to six months CD maturing before the expense or a no-penalty CD
Money will not be needed for one year One-year fixed CD with an acceptable early-withdrawal penalty
Timing is uncertain Shorter CD, no-penalty CD or CD ladder
You expect rates to rise Shorter term, bump-up CD or ladder
You expect rates to fall Longer fixed term, provided the money is not needed early
You have less than $500 Exclude CDs with higher minimums
You have more than $250,000 Review FDIC or NCUA ownership categories and consider multiple insured institutions
You live in a high-tax state Compare the after-tax CD return with Treasury alternatives
The money is for retirement Compare an IRA CD with a regular CD and consider IRA withdrawal and distribution rules

Should you build a CD ladder?

A CD ladder divides money among CDs with different maturity dates instead of locking the entire balance into one term. For example, you might divide cash among six-month, one-year, 18-month and two-year CDs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A ladder can provide periodic access, reduce the risk of committing everything at one rate and allow you to reinvest gradually as each CD matures. Its disadvantages are that it requires more tracking, some funds may be locked at below-market rates if rates rise, and deposit-insurance limits must be monitored across the accounts.

IRA CDs and jumbo CDs

IRA CDs

An IRA CD combines a certificate of deposit with an individual retirement account. The CD itself may provide a fixed return, but the IRA wrapper creates separate contribution, withdrawal and distribution rules. IRA CDs may not be available at every institution and do not always offer the highest APY. Compare them with ordinary CDs only after considering the tax treatment and whether retirement-account restrictions fit your goals. NerdWallet provides separate IRA CD guidance.

Jumbo CDs

“Jumbo CD” often refers to a high minimum deposit, traditionally around $100,000, although definitions vary. A jumbo CD is not automatically the best-paying CD. Depositing more than the insurance limit at one institution can also create uninsured exposure. Compare the actual APY, insurance coverage and liquidity rather than assuming a larger balance earns a premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CD taxes and Form 1099-INT

Interest from a taxable bank CD is generally taxable interest income. The IRS says interest that is received or credited and available for withdrawal is generally taxable, and CD interest may be reported on Form 1099-INT. You generally must report taxable interest even if you do not receive a form.

The IRS generally requires Form 1099-INT reporting when reportable interest reaches at least $10, but the tax obligation does not disappear when interest is below that reporting threshold. The IRS Publication 550, Form 1099-INT instructions and Topic 403 provide the relevant tax guidance.

An early-withdrawal penalty is generally reported separately and may be deductible under applicable rules. Individual tax treatment depends on your circumstances, so consult a qualified tax professional for personalized advice.

How April’s rate environment affected CDs

The Federal Reserve had already cut rates three times in late 2025, according to Bankrate’s April coverage. On March 17–18, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee left the federal funds target range unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%. In its March 18 statement, the Fed said it would continue assessing incoming economic data, inflation and risks to employment and economic activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Banks often adjust deposit rates in response to the policy-rate environment, but the federal funds rate does not mechanically set every CD APY. A bank’s funding needs, competition, term structure and promotional strategy also matter. Do not assume the Fed will cut or raise rates again on a particular schedule.

The February 2026 Consumer Price Index release available during the April snapshot showed the all-items index rising 2.4% over the prior 12 months. That meant a 4.00%–4.20% APY was above the latest headline CPI reading before taxes at that point. It did not guarantee a gain in purchasing power because future inflation, taxes and the full CD term still mattered. See the Bureau of Labor Statistics February CPI release.

Bankrate’s April national averages

For comparison, Bankrate reported these national average CD APYs as of April 15, 2026. Bankrate said it surveyed up to 1,200 banks and credit unions weekly for its averages.

Term Bankrate national average APY
1 year 1.90%
2 years 1.74%
3 years 1.64%
4 years 1.77%
5 years 1.70%

These are Bankrate survey averages, not rates set by the federal government. The gap between the averages and the leading offers illustrates why shopping can matter, but it does not eliminate the need to compare terms and restrictions.

CD alternatives

High-yield savings accounts

A high-yield savings account is generally better for money that may be needed at any time or that you expect to add to regularly. Its rate is variable and can decline after rate cuts, but the account usually provides easier access than a CD.

Money market deposit accounts

A money market deposit account may offer check-writing or other access features. It can have minimum-balance requirements, fees or a variable APY. It is a bank deposit account, unlike a money market mutual fund, so verify the applicable insurance.

Treasury bills

Treasury bills may be worth comparing, particularly for taxpayers in states with income tax, but they are not FDIC-insured deposit accounts. Compare current Treasury yields and after-tax returns on the day you make the decision rather than relying on April CD data.

Money market mutual funds

A money market mutual fund is an investment product, not a bank deposit. It is not FDIC-insured, even when it is available through a bank or brokerage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bond funds and individual bonds

Bond funds can lose value, and individual bonds can trade below their purchase price before maturity. They may serve different investment goals, but they are not substitutes for insured CDs when principal protection within insurance limits is the priority.

April 2026 CD checklist

  • Confirm the APY and exact term on the issuer’s current page.
  • Record the date on which the rate was reported; April comparison pages used different dates.
  • Verify the minimum deposit and whether the offer requires new money.
  • Confirm FDIC insurance for a bank or NCUA insurance for a federally insured credit union.
  • Add the proposed deposit to all existing balances in the same ownership category.
  • Read the early-withdrawal penalty and determine whether it can affect principal.
  • Check whether partial withdrawals, interest withdrawals or beneficiary changes are allowed.
  • Determine whether the CD automatically renews and how long the grace period lasts.
  • For a brokered CD, identify the issuing bank and understand the secondary-market risk.
  • For an IRA CD, review contribution, withdrawal and distribution rules.
  • Save the account agreement and set a maturity reminder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did every CD pay 4.20% APY in April 2026?

No. 4.20% was the highest rate identified by some comparison sources, but it applied to particular products and terms. Bankrate identified Mountain America Credit Union at 4.20%, while NerdWallet later identified Newtek Bank’s nine-month CD at 4.20%. Eligibility, minimum deposits and availability varied.

Does 4.20% APY mean I earn 4.20% in six months?

No. APY is an annualized yield. A six-month CD at 4.20% APY does not normally pay 4.20% of the principal over six months. The exact payout depends on the term, compounding schedule and interest-payment rules.

Are brokered CDs the same as bank CDs?

No. A brokered CD is purchased through a brokerage and may need to be sold on the secondary market to access money before maturity. Its market value can be below the purchase price. Confirm the issuing bank and insurance allocation before investing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I withdraw a CD before maturity?

Many direct CDs permit early withdrawal only with a penalty, while some restrict it or offer special no-penalty terms. The penalty may reduce interest and, under some contracts, principal. Read the account disclosure before opening the CD.

What should I do when my CD matures?

Check the maturity date, grace period and automatic-renewal instructions. Decide in advance whether to withdraw the principal, withdraw the interest, change the term or renew. Otherwise, a promotional CD may automatically roll into a lower-rate standard CD.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: April 2026 CD rates reached 4.20% APY, but the top rate was not one interchangeable product. Mountain America’s credit-union certificate, Newtek’s nine-month bank CD and Vanguard’s brokered CD offerings had different eligibility, liquidity and account structures. The sound choice was the highest insured APY for the date the money would be needed, after checking the minimum deposit, early-withdrawal penalty, insurance coverage and renewal terms.

Because April 2026 is now historical, verify every rate and disclosure on a current issuer or comparison page before depositing money.
