The report described employees being told to stay home or work from home and then wait for individual calls about their jobs. Those details came from former employees and contemporaneous reporting—not a public account from Best Buy.
When did the Geek Squad layoffs happen?
The reports concerned the first week of April 2024. 404 Media published its account on April 5; Engadget covered it on April 6, describing the event as happening “this week.” That wording refers to April 2024, not a new round of layoffs in October 2026.
Former employees told 404 Media they were instructed to stay home or work from home and await individual calls about their jobs. One former employee described receiving an email about a “work from home event” tied to a “company change.” Engadget reported that laid-off agents had also posted in an unofficial Geek Squad subreddit. “Going sleeper,” used in some community discussion, was informal worker slang for being laid off—not a Best Buy term.
How many Geek Squad agents were laid off?
No specific headcount was established in the April 2024 reporting. 404 Media said it did not know how many people had lost their jobs and that Best Buy had not responded to its request for comment. The Star Tribune reported several days later that Best Buy declined to provide a specific number. Forum posts, worker estimates and the number of online posts do not establish a total.

What did Best Buy say about severance or transfers?
In a statement to the Star Tribune in April 2024, Best Buy said affected and eligible employees would receive severance, and that some would have an opportunity to transfer or reapply. The report did not provide eligibility rules or individual severance amounts, so the statement does not establish what any particular employee was offered.
How the layoffs fit Best Buy’s broader restructuring
Before the Geek Squad reports, Best Buy’s February 29, 2024 Q4 FY24 results release disclosed $169 million in restructuring charges for that quarter, primarily related to employee termination benefits. The company described an enterprise-wide initiative intended in part to align field labor with where customers shop, redirect corporate resources toward strategy and right-size resources for its FY25 revenue outlook. The charge was company-wide context; it was not a Geek Squad-specific amount or a count of affected employees.

Did Best Buy’s AI plans cause the layoffs?
Best Buy announced generative-AI customer-support plans with Google Cloud and Accenture on April 9, 2024, days after the layoff reports. The plans included a customer virtual assistant, tools for call-center agents and an assistant for store employees. Best Buy said at the time that it expected the virtual assistant to launch in late summer 2024; that was a plan announced then, not confirmation of its present availability.
The timing shows that Best Buy was discussing AI support during the same period, but the available reporting does not establish that AI caused the April layoffs or that the affected agents were replaced by AI. A contemporaneous Star Tribune report characterized the period as a shift toward AI; that characterization is not proof of the reason for any individual job loss.
