Best Buy has no official set time for when to join an in-store release line. Its In Store Release Guidelines say the decision is yours, based on how long you are willing to wait. But a place in line does not guarantee the item will still be available.
How long should you wait?
There is no Best Buy-wide recommended number of hours to arrive early or remain in line. The appropriate wait depends on the specific release, store, your own tolerance for waiting, and how important the item is to you. Best Buy does not publish a typical queue duration or a store-specific arrival recommendation, so an exact number would be a guess.
Before deciding to go early, weigh the value of getting a place in line against the time you are prepared to spend and the possibility that stock will run out. Best Buy states: “A place in line does not guarantee product availability.”
Check the store and item before you leave
Confirm the location’s hours and the item’s current availability close to your visit. Best Buy says hours vary by store; use its Store Locator to check the specific location. Availability can change, so check the item on BestBuy.com rather than assuming that an earlier listing or a line position means stock remains.

For a particular release, check the event details and follow any instructions for that store. Conditions vary by event and location, and the published guidance does not estimate your odds of getting the item.
Where to line up and how to keep your place
For a line before a store opens, Best Buy directs customers to form outside near the front entrance. For smaller events while a store is open, employees may direct the line indoors. Staff or security can change the location to address store operations or safety.

- Follow employee and security directions.
- Do not block entrances, exits, emergency routes, neighboring businesses, traffic, sidewalks, or curbside pickup areas.
- Do not hold a place for someone else, join a group already in line, or leave an unattended chair or other placeholder. Best Buy says an extended absence may mean losing your place.
- If you need to step away briefly, such as to use a restroom, coordinate with people nearby.
Could Store Pickup save you the wait?
If the item is eligible and available for pickup at your chosen store, ordering online may be an alternative to waiting in an in-store shopping line. Select Store Pickup during checkout, then wait for Best Buy’s Ready for pickup email before going to the store. Bring photo ID and your order number when you collect it.
Best Buy says it holds Store Pickup orders for five days; order details may offer an extended option. Check the item’s availability and pickup terms, and make sure you can get there during the store’s hours after the ready notice arrives. Pickup availability and terms vary by item.

Do not confuse an in-store line with curbside pickup
The release-line guidance concerns entry to an in-store release event. Curbside pickup follows a different process: Best Buy says service order can depend on check-in time, the number and size or weight of items, and store staffing. That guidance does not provide a wait-time estimate for an in-store shopping line.
