A good bocce set is complete, easy for its intended players to handle, and suited to where and how you plan to play. For most families, start with eight larger balls in two clearly distinguishable teams, a pallino, and a carrying case; then compare ball dimensions, weight, material, and any included court boundaries against your needs.
What comes in a complete bocce set?
A conventional set contains eight larger bocce balls—four for each of two teams, distinguished by color or markings—and one smaller target ball called the pallino. A case makes the set easier to transport and store. The North Carolina Senior Games rules describe the eight-ball-and-pallino configuration, though event rules are not a universal specification for recreational sets: North Carolina Senior Games bocce rules.
Before buying, check the listing for the number of balls, how teams are distinguished, whether the pallino is included, and what comes with the set. Some recreational listings include a travel bag; boundary webbing or rope may be sold separately or included with certain configurations.
How to choose a set for your players
Compare ball dimensions and weight
There is no single size shared by every recreational set and ruleset. North Carolina Senior Games rules specify bocce balls measuring 107–110 mm and a pallino measuring 48–63 mm. Franklin Sports lists a recreational set with 100 mm balls and a 50 mm pallino. Those examples show why it is worth checking actual dimensions rather than relying only on labels such as “full size.” See the Senior Games rules and Franklin Sports product specifications.

- PREMIUM RESIN CONSTRUCTION: Crafted from high-grade resin for long lasting durability; The 90 mm diameter balls weigh approximately 1 lb 10 oz each, closer to regulation bocce than lightweight sets that are nothing like real bocce
- CLASSIC FUN: Join the timeless fun of bocce ball with this resin, all-weather bocce set; Perfect for any gathering of friends and family on the lawn, at the beach and more; Great for 2-4 player games
- HIGH GLOSS BALLS: Compare against other brands that use low-grade resin leading to cloudy finishes
- VERSATILE PLAY: Fun for all skill levels and perfect for playing on grass, sand, & bocce courts; Watch as hours of competitive fun go by with friends & family, use the included tool to measure close calls and settle the score
- FULL SET: Includes 8 balls, pallino, measuring rope, carry case, & rules; Take from your yard to the beach or anywhere else, then toss the balls into the carrying case until your next game
Weight matters alongside diameter: a ball that is awkward or tiring to grip and roll can make play less enjoyable, especially for children or players with limited hand strength. If the product page does not state weight, do not assume it from the ball’s size; seek the specification or choose a set whose seller provides it.
Check the material and what the maker claims
Material can help you compare listed construction, but a manufacturer’s description is not independent proof of durability or rolling performance. Franklin Sports lists all-weather resin balls; Champion Sports lists phenolic-resin balls. Choose based on the stated construction, intended use, and care instructions rather than treating either description as a tested performance ranking. Product details are available from Franklin Sports and Champion Sports.

Match the set to the way you will play
For informal family games, portability and comfortable handling may matter more than conformity to an event specification. For organized competition, check the organizer’s rules before buying: ball dimensions and scoring rules can vary. A case is useful if the set will travel to parks or gatherings; a boundary kit is useful when players want a clearly marked rectangle, but it is not essential for casual play.

Where can you play, and do you need court boundaries?
For informal play, a reasonably flat surface can work. The cited rules and product guidance include short grass, packed dirt, fine gravel, artificial surfaces, and sand, though the feel and roll will differ by surface. Follow the relevant event’s requirements if you are playing organized bocce; the North Carolina Senior Games rules describe event-specific equipment and play conditions.

A marked rectangle helps players see the limits of a playing area. Park and Sun Sports lists boundary webbing or rope as an optional accessory, and casual court dimensions can be adjusted to the space available. For a relaxed game in a yard or park, you can play without buying a boundary kit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How bocce scoring works
Players roll their team’s bocce balls toward the pallino, aiming to leave a ball closer to it than the opposing team’s balls. The Bocce Standards Association describes the object as rolling bocce balls closer to the pallino (jack) than the opponent. Under the association’s cited rules, a team scores one point for each of its balls closer to the pallino than any opposing ball. Those rules describe a nine-point round threshold and note that international tournaments use 15 points; a local event or house game may set a different target. Check the rules that apply to your game: Bocce Standards Association rules.
