Capacity, weight, features, and laptop-fit labels come from the manufacturers or REI as identified above; they are not directly comparable comfort tests. The cited REI guide also includes the North Face Borealis Trail, describing 28 L capacity and a 16-inch laptop fit, but the available findings do not establish its weight or a fuller feature comparison.
How to choose for campus
Start with the daily load
Estimate what needs to fit on a typical day: laptop, charger, notebooks or textbooks, lunch, water bottle, and any gym or commuting gear. The sourced examples span 26 L to 32 L. More capacity can help with bulky loads, but a larger bag may be unnecessary if you carry only a laptop and a few essentials; liters alone do not tell you how a bag will sit or feel.

Measure the laptop, not just its screen
A stated 15-, 16-, or 17-inch fit is a manufacturer or guide label, not a guarantee for every laptop with that screen size. Laptop chassis vary in width and thickness. Measure your device and compare it with the compartment’s actual dimensions where available; use the advertised screen-size figure only as an initial filter.
Choose organization around what you reach for
If you want separate spaces for books, tech, and small items, compare the number and layout of compartments rather than counting pockets alone. The Main Campus lists two main compartments and a front organizer; the Recon lists an organized front compartment and tablet sleeve; REI describes the Nebula’s multiple exterior pockets. Consider whether frequently used items can be reached without unpacking the main compartment.

Weigh carry features against the load
Compare empty weight and features such as strap shape and back padding. JanSport lists S-curve straps and a padded back panel for the Main Campus. REI lists the Nebula at 2 lb. 2 oz., while JanSport lists the Main Campus at 1 lb. 5.5 oz. Specifications cannot establish how comfortable a loaded pack will feel on a particular student; fit, load distribution, and personal preference matter.
