The best backpack for an 8-year-old is one that fits the child’s back, holds the supplies they actually need, and is comfortable enough to carry correctly. There is no universal backpack volume for this age: compare the pack with your child’s height and the school’s supply list, then let them help choose the style.
How to choose a backpack for an 8-year-old
Start with fit, not a litre number
Age alone does not determine backpack size. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises choosing a bag proportional to the child’s height, while Israel’s Ministry of Health says it should fit the child’s back and not be larger than it. Check how the bag sits on your child, then try it with the books, device, lunch and other items they will carry on an ordinary day.
A larger bag is not automatically a better investment. HealthyChildren.org cautions that extra space can encourage children to carry more weight. Choose enough room for the required load without buying excess capacity solely for future growth.
Compare practical features
- Shoulder straps: Look for two broad, adjustable straps. Adjust them to even lengths and have the child carry the pack on both shoulders.
- Back panel: Padding can improve comfort when the pack fits close; breathable mesh is another feature recommended by Israel’s Ministry of Health.
- Compartments: Separate sections can help organize supplies and distribute them. Put the heaviest items in the compartment closest to the child’s back.
- Chest or waist strap: This can help hold the pack close and redistribute some of the load.
- Visibility: Reflective strips or badges can help make a child more visible in low-light conditions, according to Israel’s Ministry of Health.
- Everyday usability: Check zippers, pockets and bottle or lunch accommodation against the child’s routine and school rules. Let the child weigh in on colors or design so the pack is one they will want to carry.
What size backpack does an 8-year-old need?
No source-backed universal capacity is established for every 8-year-old. A retailer’s litre figure is a description of a particular product, not an age-based sizing rule. The right capacity depends on the child’s body, school requirements and what fits comfortably without encouraging an unnecessarily heavy load.

Current market examples show why capacity should be treated as a comparison point rather than a prescription:
| Example | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Nike UK children’s backpack guide, updated August 17, 2026 | Lists children’s options including 16 L, 18 L and 20 L packs. These are UK retail examples, not a recommended size for all 8-year-olds. |
| State Bags Kane Double Pocket, as described in WIRED’s 2026 kids’ backpack review | The reviewer reports that her 8- and 10-year-old children use the largest double-pocket model, with a listed 23.6 L capacity, for a Chromebook, sweatshirt, lunch box and small water bottle. This is one family’s experience, not a general age-based requirement. |

Current backpack options to compare
WIRED’s 2026 review says children on its reviews team tried the featured backpacks for weeks or years. It names the L.L.Bean Deluxe Book Pack as Best Overall, State Bags Kane Double Pocket as Best Upgrade, GoRuck KR1 as Best Heavy-Duty, and Storq Cool Kid Backpack as a cool first backpack. These are WIRED’s editorial selections and reported testing, not independent testing for this article. Compare current versions and fit before choosing; a product’s category or review ranking does not establish that it will fit every child.
Nike UK’s guide is another place to see children’s backpack styles and capacities; it emphasizes fit, capacity and personal style. It is a UK retailer page, so its examples do not establish local pricing or availability elsewhere. For any option, compare fit to the child’s back, capacity against the real supply list, empty weight, strap and back-panel construction, compartments, visibility, durability evidence, style preference and local price. Capacity alone is not a sound basis for ranking bags.

How to pack and check the load
- Place heavy items near the back. Put books and computers in the compartment closest to the child’s body.
- Distribute and edit. Use the compartments to spread supplies, and remove items the child does not need that day.
- Adjust both straps evenly. The pack should sit close to the body and rest in the curve of the lower back, rather than hang far away from it.
- Observe the child carrying it. Watch for leaning, difficulty putting the pack on, pain complaints or straps digging into the shoulders. These can indicate that the load is too heavy or the fit is poor.
HealthyChildren.org and Israel’s Ministry of Health each give 15% of body weight as a recommended maximum for a backpack load. Physical therapist Jenny Chang, quoted by UW Medicine in September 2026, gives a 10% to 15% range. These are recommendations, not a proven universal cutoff: the Associated Press reported in August 2026 that American Academy of Pediatrics injury-prevention chair Sadika Kendi said there is not enough evidence to establish a one-size-fits-all approach to the commonly cited 10–15% rule. Keep the load as light as practical and seek advice from a pediatric or physical-therapy professional if you have individual concerns.

A rolling pack may suit a long walk on a smooth route, but it adds the weight of wheels and a mechanism. It can be awkward on stairs, rough ground or crowded walkways, and may be inconvenient around lockers. Check school rules and think through the child’s actual route before choosing wheels.

- ACADEMIC CAPACITY 17-INCH DESIGN - Engineered specifically for 3rd to 5th grade students (Ages 8-11), this boys school backpack features a 17.13 x 12.60 x 6.69 inch main compartment that easily swallows large 3-ring binders, standard school folders, and textbooks without bending corners. Includes a dedicated sleeve compatible with Chromebooks or tablets, ensuring all classroom essentials fit securely.

Unlike basic foam, our reinforced padding distributes weight evenly across growing shoulders. It provides the reliable structural support they need to focus on learning, not the burden.
- MULTI-POCKET SYSTEM - Solves the "cluttered bag" chaos often found in a standard bookbag for boys. Instead of one messy pouch, three distinct front compartments allow your child to separate pencils, bus passes, and snacks, ensuring critical items are always instantly accessible without digging through the main bag.
- 360° NIGHT VISIBILITY - Setting a new safety standard for school bags for boys, this design features high-visibility reflective strips on all sides (front, sides, and straps) to ensure your child is clearly seen by drivers during early morning bus waits or late afternoon walks home. The chest buckle also features a built-in safety whistle, giving kids a fun tool to signal for help and adding an extra layer of security for outdoor adventures.
- BUILT TO SURVIVE THE SCHOOL YEAR - Stop replacing elementary school backpacks mid-year! Crafted from ultra-tough 900D tear-resistant fabric, this bag easily handles rough playground drops. We’ve heavily reinforced the shoulder straps to securely carry heavier 3rd-5th grade textbooks without snapping, and added premium anti-snag zippers for smooth, frustration-free daily use.
