If you want to spend cryptocurrency while traveling, the practical choices are to use an eligible provider that converts crypto to fiat when you pay, or convert crypto to fiat before your trip and spend with a conventional travel or bank card. These routes have different eligibility rules, costs and account-policy risks; a card that handles foreign currencies does not necessarily accept cryptocurrency.
Which kind of alternative do you need?
Start by deciding whether you need crypto access at the point of purchase or simply a convenient way to spend money abroad after cashing out.
- Crypto-linked payment: An eligible service converts a selected crypto balance into fiat when you pay. That keeps crypto involved in the payment, but the merchant receives a fiat payment.
- Fiat travel card: You sell or convert crypto separately, then use the resulting fiat with a multi-currency or bank card. The card itself does not provide crypto conversion.
Residence matters as much as destination. The Wise and Revolut examples below are based on UK-facing product information; the Schwab example is for a US account. Check the provider’s current local terms and your eligibility before relying on any option.

Revolut: keep crypto involved in the payment
Revolut’s cryptocurrency terms say, “If you live in an eligible location you can use your cryptoasset balance to pay for everyday spending using Revolut Pay or your linked Revolut Card.” [Revolut cryptocurrency terms] The selected crypto is converted to the equivalent fiat amount at the rate in effect when the transaction takes place. Crypto fees tied to the subscription plan or fair-use rules may apply, and a merchant refund is returned in fiat.
Revolut’s UK travel card page advertises spending in 150+ currencies and ATM withdrawals without Revolut fees within plan limits. It also notes possible third-party ATM charges, ATM fair-use fees, currency-exchange fees, weekend markups and plan terms. When a shop or restaurant terminal offers to charge in your home currency, Revolut advises choosing the local currency; review the terminal’s conversion prompt rather than assuming its rate is favorable. This is the closest of these examples to spending crypto directly, but it is not a promise that every Revolut customer or destination is supported. Confirm eligibility and the applicable crypto and card terms before travel.
Wise: a fiat travel card, not a crypto on-ramp
Wise’s UK policy states: “You can’t use your Wise account to buy, sell, or trade cryptocurrencies.” [Wise cryptocurrency policy] Wise separately says its cards may be used for lawful transactions supported in the card region. That card-use statement should not be read as permission to use a Wise account to buy, sell, trade, or route cryptocurrency-related transfers.

If you cash out elsewhere and intend to fund Wise, check the account policy for the particular source of funds and transfer pattern. Wise’s UK card page describes spending across 40+ currencies, a digital card that can be added to a wallet, and free ATM withdrawals up to £250 per month, followed by a 2.69% fee on amounts above the monthly allowance; an ATM provider may also charge. Schwab Investor Checking: a conventional US backup
For travelers who are eligible for a US account, Schwab’s Investor Checking debit card is a bank-card route after crypto has been converted to fiat separately. Schwab says it assesses no foreign-transaction fees on foreign-currency purchases or ATM withdrawals and provides unlimited ATM fee rebates. Independent ATM operators or merchants can still charge fees, and the exchange rate may be set by the bank, network or Visa. This is not a crypto conversion service or an account option for every international traveler. Check US account eligibility and the linked disclosures, and distinguish Schwab’s fee and rebate treatment from charges imposed by an ATM operator or a merchant.

- Exchange rate and markup: Find out how the provider sets the rate and whether it adds a spread or other currency-exchange charge.
- Crypto conversion: For a crypto-linked payment, check the conversion rate, any crypto fee and whether transaction-time conversion applies.
- Plan and fair-use limits: A subscription, allowance or threshold may change the price of spending or cash access.
- ATM charges: Separate the issuer’s fee or rebate from the ATM operator’s own charge; an issuer rebate may not cover every fee.
- Timing and payment prompts: Check for weekend markups and compare the terminal’s currency-conversion offer with paying in local currency.
- Account-policy fit: Confirm that the provider permits the way you plan to cash out, transfer funds and use the account.
Do not compare a headline “no exchange fees” claim with another provider’s explicit conversion fee without also checking the rate used, plan limits, fair-use rules and your residence eligibility.
Choose based on your route and residence
- If you want crypto converted at checkout, investigate Revolut only if its crypto feature is available to you. Verify the eligible-location terms, transaction-time rate, plan fees and refund handling.
- If you plan to cash out before travel, compare fiat cards and bank cards available in your country. For Wise, review its cryptocurrency policy as well as the card terms; do not assume a lawful card purchase makes crypto-related funding or transfers acceptable.
- If you are considering Schwab, first establish that you can open and use the US Investor Checking account. Then review its ATM rebate and DCC disclosures alongside any third-party charges.
- Before departure, check current provider terms for both your residence and destination, keep a separate backup payment method, and know whether a refund will return in fiat or another form.
