How to choose an all-purpose backpack
Start with the job the bag will do most often. A pack that works for a short hike may lack the organization or laptop protection you want for commuting; a travel bag with a laptop compartment may not offer the ventilation and suspension of a trail pack.
- Capacity and load: Match volume to the gear you actually carry. A smaller pack can be easier to manage, but may not fit layers, food and other essentials for a longer outing.
- Fit and suspension: Look at the back panel, shoulder straps and any hipbelt or hipwings. Features aimed at carrying a load on the trail are different from features aimed at commuting or airport access.
- Access and organization: Decide whether you prefer a top-loading layout, a clamshell opening, internal compartments or quick access to a laptop.
- Water and weather: Check for bottle pockets, hydration-reservoir compatibility and included rain protection. These are separate features: a reservoir sleeve does not by itself establish that a pack is weatherproof.
- Flying: Compare the bag’s packed dimensions with the specific airline’s current personal-item and carry-on limits. A carry-on label is not a guarantee of acceptance.

The Refugio balances everyday organization with features useful for light outdoor use. Patagonia lists a padded sleeve for laptops up to 15 inches, hydration access, bottle pockets and a breathable back panel; the pack weighs 666 g.
