The best Advent calendar is the one whose contents fit the recipient—not necessarily the one marketed as “luxury.” Compare the category, number of days, actual products and likely use before paying for a countdown. The examples below are 2025 editions; their prices, stock and contents should not be treated as current for a later holiday season.
How to choose an Advent calendar
- Start with the recipient. Pick a category they enjoy and products they are likely to use. A high-end label does not make an unsuitable assortment good value.
- Check the countdown length. Calendars may cover 12, 24 or 25 days, according to NBC Select’s 2025 roundup. Confirm the count on the exact edition.
- Read the contents, not just the category name. A chocolate calendar might include other treats; a beauty calendar can mix skincare, makeup and bath products. For drinks, check serving sizes and whether alcohol is included.
- Check edition and market. Contents and availability can vary by year and country. Verify the current product page, seller, price and stock before buying.
NBC Select says its 2025 recommendations were drawn from brands its team had covered or personally tried, and that it considered contents, price and packaging. It also disclosed that some calendars were courtesy samples. That is NBC Select’s selection process, not evidence that every product below was independently tested.

Chocolate and other treats
Among the named 2025 examples, Hotel Chocolat’s Grand Advent Calendar was a mixed assortment: T3 described chocolates alongside Velvetiser sachets, mini-crackers and alcohol creams. It is therefore worth checking the precise contents if the recipient expects chocolate alone.
NBC Select described Bonne Maman’s 2025 calendar as containing 24 mini jars, while its Godiva 2025 Limited Edition contained 24 chocolate pieces. Those counts describe those editions, not a general standard for food calendars. Other examples in the T3 roundup included Ilchester cheese and Pringles crisps, offering alternatives for recipients whose tastes run beyond sweets.

Coffee and tea
T3 listed a Nespresso Advent Calendar with pods for Original and Vertuo machines. Check which machine the recipient owns and confirm that the current edition includes compatible pods before purchasing. Its Bird & Blend Tea Advent Calendar description specified two tea bags per day and regular and caffeine-free options; check the current selection and format for the edition on sale.
Beer, wine, spirits and alcohol-free drinks
Drink calendars vary in both beverage and format. T3’s 2025 examples included a Brewdog Craft Beer Advent Calendar described as 24 beers; a Virgin Wines Mixed Wine calendar with 24 small bottles plus larger bottles; and a Fever Tree Gin & Tonic calendar with 12 pairings. These are historical product descriptions, not statements about current stock or contents.
An Alcohol Free Craft Beer calendar was also among T3’s examples. Before buying any drink calendar, check the alcohol status, number and size of servings, delivery restrictions and the recipient’s preferences. A calendar with 12 pairings is a different kind of countdown from one with 24 individual drinks.

Toy Advent calendars for children
For toy calendars, match the age guidance and theme to the child, then consider whether the daily pieces add up to a coherent play experience. T3’s 2025 listing described the LEGO Harry Potter calendar as 227 pieces for ages 7 and up. Its Playmobil Christmas bakery example had 24 doors and baking accessories. These details apply to the cited 2025 products; check the box or current listing for the specific edition you are considering.

NBC Select also included a Mickey and Friends Share the Magic calendar in its 2025 roundup. Themes, piece counts and age guidance can change between editions, so verify them rather than relying on an old product description.
Beauty and pamper calendars
Beauty calendars can combine several product types and sizes. Compare the assortment with the recipient’s routine and brand preferences, and look for a clear breakdown of full-size products versus minis when one is provided.

Shiseido UK described its 2025 calendar as a 24-product assortment spanning skincare, bath and body, and makeup. John Lewis & Partners described its 2025 beauty calendar as containing 36 products, including items from Trinny London, Fenty Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury and Clinique. Those are descriptions of specific 2025 editions, not a guarantee about another year’s calendar.
Other names in the 2025 roundups included Charlotte Tilbury Lucky Chest, ELLE Beauty, Liberty London Beauty, Lush and John Lewis beauty calendars. Compare the exact contents, sizes and product categories in the current listing; the brand name alone does not tell you whether the products will suit the recipient.

T3’s 2025 examples included 12-day Astrid & Miyu, Missoma and Abbott Lyon calendars. For jewellery, check the number of days, metal or colour options, personalization and whether the styles are ones the recipient would wear. The named products are historical examples; verify the current edition’s details.

NBC Select’s 2025 picks included a dog-chew calendar and a Voluspa home calendar, while John Lewis covered calendars for dogs and cats. For a pet calendar, inspect ingredients and suitability with the manufacturer, especially if the animal has dietary sensitivities. For home-fragrance calendars, compare the actual candle or fragrance contents and formats.
What to verify before you buy
- Open the current product listing. Confirm the year or edition, contents, countdown length and any age or compatibility guidance.
- Check the seller and price. Stock, pricing and retailer availability can change; historical roundup prices are not current quotes.
- Assess the usable value. Consider whether the recipient will use the contents, including minis, food they do not eat, drinks they do not want or toy pieces that do not suit their age.
- Confirm delivery and restrictions. Alcohol, food and other products may have location-specific shipping or eligibility terms.
The cited roundups are shopping guides, not a single controlled comparison. T3’s page was last updated on 1 January 2025; NBC Select’s roundup was dated 17 November 2025. Shiseido UK’s brand description, dated 28 August 2025, is useful for that company’s own calendar, while John Lewis & Partners’ reviewed 2025 page did not show a publication date. Treat all named examples as historical and check the actual edition offered for the season you are shopping.
