The best 55-liter backpack depends on the trip: choose a framed backpacking pack for carrying gear on trails, or a travel pack if you want suitcase-style access and a detachable daypack. Strong candidates include the REI Co-op Flash 55 for a lighter framed option, the Gregory Zulu 55 for adjustable suspension and a ventilated back panel, the Osprey Aether 55 for heavier loads, and the Osprey Farpoint 55 for travel. Their stated capacities do not make them interchangeable: the Farpoint’s 55 liters include a separate 15-liter daypack, while the others are backpacking packs.
What kind of 55-liter backpack fits your trip?
Capacity is only one part of the choice. A backpacking pack is built to carry gear while walking for hours; a travel pack prioritizes access to clothing and the ability to secure straps for transit. Compare how each fits, supports its intended load, and opens—not just the number printed in its name.
- For trail use: Look at the REI Co-op Flash 55, Gregory Zulu 55, or Osprey Aether 55. These are framed backpacking packs with different approaches to adjustment, ventilation, and load support.
- For travel: The Osprey Farpoint 55 pairs a 40-liter main pack with a detachable 15-liter daypack, plus stowaway straps and travel-oriented access.
The descriptions here reflect published retailer and manufacturer information, not independent comparative testing. Load figures also are not directly comparable: a stated range, retailer comfort claim, and a pack’s actual fit on your body answer different questions.
How the leading packs compare
| Pack | Best suited to | Published capacity and weight | Notable features and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| REI Co-op Flash 55 | Backpacking; a lighter framed option | REI lists 53 L (S), 55 L (M), 57 L (L), and 56 L for a mixed torso/hipbelt configuration. Listed weights range from 2 lb 12 oz to 2 lb 14 oz by size. | Adjustable torso; removable lid and adjustable/removable organization features. REI says it carries comfortably with loads up to 35 lb. Rain cover and reservoir are not included; it accepts a reservoir up to 3 L. |
| Gregory Zulu 55 | Backpacking; adjustable suspension and airflow | Current size-specific capacity and weight should be checked on the product listing. | Adjustable torso and FreeFloat dynamic hipbelt. Gregory describes a full-length tensioned mesh back panel for airflow and positions the pack for overnight trips. |
| Osprey Aether 55 | Backpacking with heavier loads and a customizable fit | Osprey lists 55 L (S/M) and 58 L (L/XL), with weights of 4.83 lb (2.19 kg) and 4.87 lb (2.21 kg), respectively. | Osprey lists a 30–60 lb (14–27 kg) load range and includes a rain cover. |
| Osprey Farpoint 55 | Travel, with a detachable daypack | Osprey lists 55 L total (40 L main pack plus 15 L daypack), a weight of 4.12 lb (1.87 kg), and a 7–16 kg load range. | Travel access and stowaway straps. Osprey says the main pack, with the daypack detached, meets most domestic carry-on requirements; airline limits vary, so check the carrier’s rules. |

What to check before choosing
Fit and size
Start with the manufacturer’s torso and hipbelt sizing for the exact model and size. A pack that is too long or too short may put weight in the wrong place, regardless of capacity. The Flash’s listed volume changes by size, as does the Aether’s; a “55” in the model name does not guarantee the same usable volume across sizes or brands. Try the pack with weight if you can, and adjust the hipbelt and shoulder straps before judging the fit.
Load support
Consider the weight you expect to carry, including food and water, and how the pack transfers that weight to the hips. Osprey publishes load ranges for the Aether and Farpoint; REI’s Flash page gives a comfort statement up to 35 lb. Those are different kinds of product information, not a shared standard or a universal safe-load limit. Gregory’s Zulu emphasizes its adjustable suspension and dynamic hipbelt, but its product page does not establish a comparable load range in the reviewed information.

Access, pockets, and included gear
Consider whether you prefer a top-loading backpacking design or the Farpoint’s travel-oriented organization. Check the pocket layout against what you need to reach while moving. Also verify what comes in the box: the Farpoint includes its detachable daypack, the Aether includes a rain cover, while the Flash does not include a rain cover or hydration reservoir. Avoid buying duplicate accessories.

If you are using “55-liter” as an approximate capacity range, REI’s guide also includes the Osprey Aura AG 50 and Atmos AG 50 for weekend trips. They are not exact 55-liter models: REI lists the Aura at 47 L (XS/S) and 50 L (M/L), and the Atmos at 50 L (S/M) and 53 L (L/XL). The Aura and Atmos are different pack models, so compare their fit and features to your needs rather than treating their similar volumes as proof that they suit the same wearer or trip.

How to make the final choice
- Choose the category: Decide whether the pack will mainly carry gear on trails or clothing through airports and transit.
- Set a realistic load: Estimate your packed weight and compare the manufacturer’s load information where available, without treating different claims as equivalent.
- Check fit in your size: Use the brand’s torso and hipbelt guidance, then test adjustments with weight if possible.
- Check actual volume and weight: Confirm specifications for your exact size; capacities and weights may vary within a model.
- Confirm included components and airline rules: Check rain protection, hydration compatibility, detachable daypacks, and the relevant carrier’s current cabin-bag limits.
