The Osprey Aether Plus 100 and Gregory Baltoro Pro 100L are two manufacturer-documented options, but neither can be called a universal “best” without comparative testing. Start with fit and the weight you expect to carry, then compare their documented features and regional availability.
Is a 100-liter backpack the right size?
100 liters is a very large capacity. Deuter’s backpacking guidance describes 60–75-liter packs for some long, self-supported journeys, so a 100-liter model is not automatically a better choice for a longer trip. The right size depends on the equipment you must carry, how bulky it is, and whether you need to transport gear for more than one person.
Before shopping, make a realistic gear list and check whether it fits in a smaller pack. Extra capacity can be useful when your equipment is bulky or your trip requires substantial supplies, but the capacity figure alone says nothing about whether a pack fits you or carries your planned load well.
Deuter advises that a backpack should weigh no more than a quarter of the wearer’s body weight, and ideally 20% or less. Treat that as the manufacturer’s general guidance, not a universal independently established threshold. Deuter also recommends testing a loaded pack on a shorter hike before relying on it for a trip. Read Deuter’s backpack selection guidance.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Osprey Aether Plus 100 | 98 L in S/M and 100 L in L/XL; published load range 40–70 lb (18–32 kg). | Adjustable torso, hipbelt and shoulder straps; removable lid that converts to a daypack; included raincover; front access; sleeping-bag compartment, hydration sleeve and equipment attachment points. | Heavy-load trekking or expedition use where adjustability, access and included practical features are priorities. | The cited product page is an Osprey Brazil/English listing. Its price, stock and regional configuration should not be assumed to apply everywhere. |
| Gregory Baltoro Pro 100L | Listed in 100 L and 85 L sizes; the cited UK listing gives a medium torso range of 43–51 cm. | Adjustable fit, FreeFloat suspension and an AirCushion mesh back panel, as described by Gregory. | A large-volume alternative for shoppers whose torso fit and preferred suspension features match the listing. | The cited listing is UK-specific; sizes, availability and prices can vary by region. |

How to choose between them
1. Check torso and hip fit first
Use the manufacturer’s sizing guidance, then try the pack on with weight if you can. Gregory’s cited medium torso range is 43–51 cm; that figure applies to the UK listing, not necessarily every regional product assortment. Osprey documents adjustment at the torso, hipbelt and shoulder straps. An adjustable system still has to fit your body in practice.

2. Match the expected load, not just the capacity
Osprey publishes a 40–70 lb (18–32 kg) load range for the Aether Plus 100. That is a product specification, not a claim that every wearer should carry that weight or that the pack is suitable for every load in the range. The cited Gregory listing does not state a comparable load range.
3. Compare access and organization with your gear
The Aether Plus 100’s documented front access, sleeping-bag compartment, hydration sleeve and attachment points may suit a kit that benefits from those features; its removable lid can also serve as a daypack. Gregory’s cited page emphasizes its suspension and back-panel design. Compare the actual layout with the items you need to reach or attach during your trip.

4. Verify the exact regional model and stock
Product names and stated capacities do not guarantee that the same sizes, configuration or availability apply in every country. Check the exact manufacturer or retailer listing for your region before buying, especially if you are concerned about discontinued models. A public r/Mountaineering post from May 8, 2025, asks about a “100L+” expedition pack and mentions that concern, but it does not establish general availability or the status of any particular model: see the post.

The available manufacturer information supports comparing stated capacity, fit adjustments and features. It does not provide an independent head-to-head test, a reliable comparative durability result or a representative owner survey. No physical test establishes which model is more comfortable or lasts longer. Choose based on your fit, planned load and required features rather than treating either pack as a proven overall winner.
