Bert’s opened in October 2025 at 187 Challenger Parade, City Beach, taking over the former Odyssea restaurant site. The new restaurant is owned by Mark Pearn, Nic Strachan and Evan Hewitt, the hospitality trio associated with The Rowing Pavilion and General Public Food Co. Its name recalls the old City Beach Tea Rooms, while its reported offer centres on casual, all-day coastal dining.
What replaced Odyssea at City Beach?
Bert’s occupies the former Odyssea site at 187 Challenger Parade, overlooking the coast at City Beach. Odyssea closed in April 2025 after a reported nine-year run, according to Broadsheet’s November 2025 venue feature. Bert’s opened in October that year; PerthNow reported on 2 October that it would open that Friday.
The change was not presented as a fine-dining reinvention. Co-owner Mark Pearn told PerthNow the aim was to make the venue approachable and coastal: “We wanted to create a really approachable venue and bring in that coastal vibe.” Broadsheet later quoted him saying, “We’re never going to branch into a fine-dining space.”
Who owns Bert’s?
The owners are Mark Pearn, Nic Strachan and Evan Hewitt. PerthNow’s May 2025 announcement identified the trio and linked their hospitality work to The Rowing Pavilion and General Public Food Co. Pearn described the intended rhythm as breakfast, lunch, dinner and takeaway, including coffee and a light breakfast to go.

Why is it called Bert’s?
The name refers to the historic City Beach Tea Rooms, locally remembered as Bert’s Shop. The kiosk was a beach gathering place associated with surfers and the City Beach Surfriders Club. PerthNow described the name’s connection to local figures Bert and Bob; Broadsheet says one early owner ran the seaside kiosk from 1950 to 1962.
The dates describe different things: Broadsheet places the broader tea-room era across the 1930s to the 1970s, while 1950–1962 is the reported period for one owner. PerthNow also published an archival photograph captioned as surfers at the City Beach Tea Rooms in 1956, credited to the State Library of WA.

What kind of food and drinks does Bert’s serve?
Coverage around the opening described a day-to-night menu that combined breakfast and takeaway with seafood, small plates and familiar casual dishes. Those reports offer a picture of the opening concept, not a guarantee of what is available now.
Opening-era menu
PerthNow’s October 2025 opening-week report named mini prawn and lobster rolls, anchovy toast, wagyu tartare, cured salmon and chicken parmigiana. Patrick Curran was identified as the chef leading the kitchen. The announcement earlier that year had described a seasonal, local-produce direction with pizzas, sides and share plates.

Later reported menu examples
Broadsheet’s November 2025 feature named executive chef Matthew Rogers and head chef Patrick Curran. Its examples ranged from acai bowls, a breakfast burger, banoffee pancakes and chipotle eggs Benedict to oysters, gochujang prawns, snapper, glazed tofu, burgers, parmigiana, pizza and tacos. These are reported examples from that period; check the restaurant’s current menu before making a trip for a particular dish.
Drinks
Opening coverage described four signature cocktails and named Western Australian producers and wines including VodE Vodka, West Winds Gin, LSMerchants, Cullen, LAS Vino and Voyager Estate. Broadsheet later described a drinks list focused on Australian-made products, with WA wines and Margaret River beer among its examples. Its feature mentioned Papa Salt gin in a house gin Martini and Manly Spirits Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur in an Espresso Martini.

What is the design and atmosphere?
The owners worked with Woods Bagot on a fit-out intended to draw on City Beach’s coastal character and beach-shack history. PerthNow’s May announcement described plans involving timber and weatherboard; Broadsheet’s later feature described a relaxed coastal interior with old photographs and memorabilia. The venue was reported as a casual restaurant with a coastal view and day-to-night service.
What should visitors check before going?
Broadsheet listed daily hours of 6am to late in its November 2025 feature. Hours, menus, prices, drinks and booking arrangements can change, so confirm current details with Bert’s before setting out. Broadsheet also reported vegan and vegetarian choices, and said all but three dishes were gluten-free and the kitchen was entirely nut-free. Those are dated venue-reporting claims, not a substitute for asking the restaurant directly about current ingredients, cross-contact or allergy procedures.
