WLAN chip startup Bermai raised an additional $12 million in Series B funding in 2003, bringing its reported total funding to approximately $34 million. Its planned chips combined radio-frequency, baseband and MAC functions in a single CMOS package.

How much funding did Bermai raise?

Bermai secured an additional $12 million in Series B financing, according to EDN’s June 26, 2003 report. The report put the company’s cumulative funding at approximately $34 million at that time.

Who invested in the Series B?

EDN named four participants in the round:

  • Advanced Technology Ventures
  • Blueprint Ventures
  • Mobius Venture Capital
  • STIC Ventures, backed by LG Electronics

What was Bermai developing?

Founded in 2001, Bermai pursued all-CMOS wireless LAN radios that brought RF, baseband and MAC functionality together in one package. Combining these functions was the company’s stated integration approach; the reported funding announcement does not establish that every planned design reached commercial production.

Product and standards roadmap

Bermai sampled its first product for 802.11a applications in May 2002. Its work also included chips intended for 802.11g, combined 802.11a/g, and 802.11a/e designs. Sampling indicates that a product was provided for evaluation, not necessarily that it was broadly available to buyers.

What happened after the funding announcement?

The June 2003 report describes the financing and Bermai’s product plans, but does not establish the company’s subsequent commercial outcome. It supports the conclusion that the round gave the startup additional capital to pursue its WLAN chip business; it does not document later product launches, a sale, or a shutdown.
