Apple opened its first Berlin store at Kurfürstendamm 26 on May 3, 2013, at 5 p.m. local time. Contemporary reports described a queue that stretched around the block, with some customers waiting for hours or overnight.
When did Berlin’s first Apple Store open?
Apple Kurfürstendamm opened to the public on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 5 p.m. local time. The address was Kurfürstendamm 26. Apple later confirmed the store’s place in the city’s retail history: in a December 2021 announcement about its Rosenthaler Straße store, Apple called that location its second Berlin store and said Kurfürstendamm had opened in 2013. What were the crowds like?
Opening-day coverage described a line of Apple fans that extended around the block. Reports said some customers had waited for hours or overnight. A May 6, 2013, dpa report published by DIE ZEIT also described a large rush around the opening. DIE ZEIT, May 6, 2013; DIE WELT, May 3, 2013.
Why published numbers differ
Apfelpage estimated that roughly 3,500–4,000 people were in the queue. That was a report-specific estimate, not an official attendance count. Heise online reported that T-shirts were promised to the first 4,500 visitors; that was a giveaway threshold, not evidence that exactly 4,500 people attended. Neither figure establishes a definitive opening-day crowd total, and Apple did not publish an attendance statistic in the cited coverage. Apfelpage, 2013; heise online, 2013.

Where did the store open?
The store occupied the former Filmbühne Wien cinema building at Kurfürstendamm 26. Contemporary coverage noted the historic building’s lengthy renovation ahead of the opening. DIE WELT, May 3, 2013; heise online, April 25, 2013.
