What happened in the February 2025 fare revision?
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) revised fares in February 2025, prompting debate over affordability and whether higher prices fit the metro’s public-transport purpose. The headline claim that the hike “prioritises bottom line over public interest” is an argument about that trade-off, not a fact established simply by the fare change.
RTI-based reporting by Moneycontrol said BMRCL proposed a 105.15% cumulative increase over 7.5 years, while the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) recommended a 51.55% cumulative increase over the same period. The comparison describes proposals over time; neither figure means every passenger’s fare rose by that percentage.
Why the proposed and recommended figures do not tell the whole story
The FFC figure was a cumulative average
The 51.55% recommendation should not be read as a ceiling on each fare slab. A BMRCL official told Moneycontrol that rationalising the fare matrix meant some slabs saw larger increases. A commuter’s change therefore depends on the journey and the applicable slab, not just the headline cumulative average.

The report’s release timing raised a transparency concern
Moneycontrol reported that the FFC report was released months after the fare revision. That delay matters to passengers trying to understand how fares were set and to assess the difference between the recommendation and the final matrix. By itself, however, a late release does not prove the fare calculation was invalid.
Affordability and the operator’s finances are both part of the debate
Passengers have a direct interest in affordable fares and access to reliable public transport. BMRCL also needs revenue to operate and expand the network. The public figures cited in coverage provide context, but do not alone determine whether a particular fare is justified or whether the operator is profitable.

For FY 2023–24, BMRCL reported fare-box revenue of Rs 5,73.91 crore and non-fare-box revenue of Rs 416.11 crore, according to Scroll. These are reported revenue figures for that financial year, not a complete account of expenses, operating performance or net profit.
Moneycontrol also reported, based on BMRCL’s RTI response, that the corporation spent Rs 26 lakh on study visits to Hong Kong and Singapore. That expenditure may prompt questions about priorities, but it is not by itself evidence that the fare calculation was wrong.

What happened to the proposed February 2026 annual revision?
BMRCL had announced a fare revision of up to 5% for February 9, 2026. After public and political opposition, the corporation said the media release announcing the revision “has been kept on hold till further orders,” as reported by The Indian Express on February 8, 2026. The 5% was a proposed annual revision, not proof that fares increased by that amount.
BMRCL’s official fare information page, accessed October 7, 2026, says revised fare details will be released soon. The available information does not establish whether the hold was later lifted or provide a definitive current fare matrix. Do not assume either that the proposed revision took effect or that the 2025 matrix remains unchanged.

How to check what your journey costs
- Open BMRCL’s official fare page and use its fare calculator or current fare chart to check your origin and destination.
- Check the page for an updated matrix before travelling; its current notice says revised details are forthcoming.
- For smart-card top-ups, BMRCL lists the Namma Metro, Paytm and Amazon Pay apps as recharge options on its smart-card information page.
A comparison with a two-wheeler is route-specific, not a general rule that one option is always cheaper. Distance, fuel, parking, vehicle costs and the commuter’s alternatives all affect the comparison. BMRCL’s 2026 Metro Parking Policy discusses subsidised long-duration park-and-ride charges and pre-fixed auto access at some stations, but those measures do not settle whether a particular metro fare is affordable.
