How large was the Karolyi Ranch?
The Washington Post reported that the Karolyis bought their initial Huntsville property in 1985 and that the ranch eventually grew to approximately 2,000 acres. The U.S. women’s national gymnastics training complex occupied about 70 acres within the ranch, according to a 2016 Houston Chronicle interview. These figures describe the property’s scale, not its market value or the couple’s personal equity.
Did Bela and Martha Karolyi earn money from coaching and camps?
Bela and Martha Karolyi built coaching careers in Romania and the United States, coached Olympic champions including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton, and operated a training site and summer camps. The Associated Press’s 2024 obituary describes their coaching careers; the Houston Chronicle’s 2016 interview covers the ranch and camp activities.
Those accounts establish their professional work, but they do not report lifetime profits, compensation, business expenses, or net earnings. They therefore cannot be used to calculate a personal fortune. In the 2016 interview, Bela also described facility needs and the limits of what he could fund through his own efforts; that comment does not disclose his income or wealth.

What about claims of a $2.3 million bank balance?
A 2016 article by Romanian outlet Stirile Kanal D claimed Bela had a $2.3 million bank balance and annual income of $600,000, and attributed $210,000 in annual income to Martha. No corroboration for those figures surfaced in the reliable coverage reviewed. They should be treated as unverified claims from that outlet, not established account balances, earnings, or net-worth figures.

USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee reached a $380 million settlement in 2021 with gymnasts abused by Larry Nassar, as reported in the Houston Chronicle’s 2024 coverage. That settlement was not a payment to Bela Karolyi and provides no evidence of his personal wealth.
After Nassar’s abuse revelations, USA Gymnastics shut down the ranch training center and canceled plans to buy it. The Houston Chronicle reported that Walker County officials investigated the Karolyis but did not charge them; lawsuits naming them were dropped after the 2021 settlement. Those legal developments do not supply the financial information needed to estimate his net worth.
