In Ashlee Vance’s 2015 biography, Musk’s roommate Adeo Ressi said admission was $5 and crowds could reach 500. The biography describes that party house as having ten bedrooms—not fourteen.
How the Penn parties worked
Musk and Ressi were roommates at Penn in the early 1990s. Ressi later described the idea as a way for the two of them to get out of the dorms: “At Penn in 1992, Elon Musk and I became roommates, starting a nightclub in order for us both to escape the dorms.” Ressi’s 2017 retrospective corroborates the roommate-and-nightclub setup.
Vance’s account supplies the party details. Ressi recalled: “We would have as many as five hundred people. We would charge five dollars, and it would be pretty much all you could drink—beer and Jell-O shots and other things.” Musk, in turn, said: “I was paying my own way through college and could make an entire month’s rent in one night.” Esquire’s account of the Penn years also reports these recollections from Vance’s biography.
Was the party house really 14 bedrooms?
No. The detailed account identifies the off-campus party venue as a ten-bedroom house. A separate passage in the biography describes a later house with fourteen rooms. Those are different houses, and “fourteen rooms” does not establish fourteen bedrooms for the party venue. The biography text is the source for both descriptions.

What the rent story establishes—and what it doesn’t
The anecdote is a reported recollection, not a financial record. Ressi’s “as many as five hundred” describes a possible crowd size, while Musk’s rent statement is his own retrospective account. Neither establishes that every party drew 500 paying guests or that the night’s proceeds were independently verified as profit. Multiplying the maximum crowd by the admission price would therefore produce a hypothetical gross figure, not a documented nightly take.
Wharton Magazine identifies Musk as W’97, C’97 and places his studies there in the mid-1990s, providing university context rather than confirmation of the parties. Wharton Magazine’s profile does not independently verify the party or rent details.
