Archival photographs make the changing shape of Perth shopping centres visible: Morley City Shopping Centre in 1975, Mirrabooka Square in 1986 and Claremont Arcade in 1994 are among the dated examples in a PerthNow feature published on 25 July 2025. The feature also contrasts an earlier, Big W-centred Karrinyup with the present-day centre, although its accessible text does not specify the earlier image’s date. At Morley, the 1975 image predates the centre’s later identity as Morley Galleria.
What the dated pictures show
The photographs offer snapshots of specific places at particular moments, not a complete record of every redevelopment. Read each image with its caption: the date, exact centre or site, and credit help establish what is being compared. A photograph can show a building’s visible form and the shops or public spaces in frame, but it does not by itself establish a construction timeline, ownership history or the full extent of a project.
| Centre or site | Image date stated in the source | What the source identifies | Image credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morley City Shopping Centre | 1975 | Before it became Morley Galleria | Fritz Kos |
| Mirrabooka Square | 1986 | A view of the shopping centre | Galeforce Photography |
| Claremont Arcade | 1994 | A view of the shopping centre | Galeforce Photography |
| Karrinyup | Not stated in the accessible PerthNow text | An earlier, more modest centre described as centred around Big W | State Library of WA/The West Australian |
These dates and credits are given in the individual image captions in PerthNow’s photo feature. Its Karrinyup description should not be assigned a year unless the image caption or original collection record confirms one.
How to make a fair before-and-after comparison
A strong comparison separates what the images actually show from what would require other documentation. Matching views are especially useful, but the available sources do not establish a complete set of paired, same-angle photographs for these centres.

- Identify the place and date: use the exact centre or site name and the date in the caption or catalogue record.
- Check the viewpoint: note whether the photographs use the same angle and framing. A different viewpoint can make a centre appear more or less extensive even when the building has not changed in the way the framing suggests.
- Describe visible details: compare building form, entrances, shop signs, parking or public areas only where they are actually visible.
- Keep wider claims separate: claims about redevelopment stages, ownership or economic effects need documentary sources beyond the image itself.
- Retain the credit: follow the specific photograph’s caption and source attribution.
Karrinyup’s archival trail
State Library of Western Australia catalogue records provide dated material that helps place Karrinyup in context, even though they do not establish the date of the particular earlier image used by PerthNow.
- 7 December 1970: an aerial photograph records the proposed Karrinyup centre site. The SLWA catalogue lists call number BA1524/104 for this image. View the catalogue record.
- 9 May 1973: the Library catalogues aerial photographs of the centre under construction. View the construction-photo record.
- 1986: an SLWA search record identifies redevelopment plans by Davenport Campbell & Partners. The record supports the existence and date of plans, but does not establish their contents. View the catalogue search.
Together, these records show a progression from a proposed site to construction and later redevelopment planning. They are not evidence that the PerthNow image itself was taken on any one of those dates.

Galleria’s current redevelopment
As of 8 October 2026, Galleria’s official development page describes a project of approximately A$240 million. The centre says formal construction began on 19 September 2025, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The announced work includes transforming the Fashion Mall, creating an indoor-outdoor entertainment and dining precinct, and upgrading Centre Court. Galleria says the centre remains open during construction, although some parking, access and amenities are affected. These are the operator’s current project statements; schedules and conditions can change. Check Galleria’s development updates.

Viewing an image in a catalogue is not the same as having permission to republish it. The State Library record for the 1973 construction photographs says copies can be ordered and directs users to contact the Library about publication or display. Check the rights and conditions for each image before using it in print or online. The SLWA record includes its image-copy and permissions guidance.

PerthNow quotes Nico McLaughlan, State Library of WA Community Awareness Coordinator, saying the Library shares photographs on Instagram in the hope of inspiring people to discover more about Western Australia through its collections. McLaughlan also describes the scenes as often familiar and nostalgic. The photographs’ appeal lies in that mix of recognition and change: a familiar centre can look strikingly different when seen through an older frame.
