Beautiful but cheap destinations do exist, but there is no universal cheapest place to visit: the answer changes with your departure point, travel dates, trip length, and whether you want a hostel or a private room. For a like-for-like starting point, compare lodging, meals, local transport, and sights—and keep airfare separate. In current European comparisons, Sarajevo leads a two-person city-break basket, while Sofia is highlighted as a budget-friendly base for exploring Europe.
What “cheap” means for a trip
A destination’s low local prices do not guarantee a low total holiday cost. Flights, long-distance transfers, accommodation standards, and season can outweigh savings on meals or sightseeing. A useful comparison starts with the same expense basket: a bed, meals, local transport, and activities. Then add the costs specific to your trip, especially getting there.
For a Europe-specific benchmark, Lonely Planet’s 2026 guide defines a budget traveler as spending €40–70 per day on hostel accommodation, local meals, public transport, and limited paid sights. Its mid-budget estimate is €70–120 per day for a private room in a budget hotel, restaurant meals, public transport, and several paid attractions. These are the publisher’s estimates for Europe, not guaranteed prices for every city or a complete-trip total; the quoted daily categories do not establish airfare, insurance, visas, or long-distance transfers.
Season can change the comparison. Lonely Planet estimates that prices in its Europe coverage may be 20–40% higher in July and August than in the shoulder seasons of April–June and September–October. That is a 2026 guide estimate for its European comparison, not a rule for every destination. The 2026 Monde du Voyage article also notes that a final budget depends on departure country, season, exchange rates, and whether flights are booked early or off peak.

European destinations with a clear value case
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina: a city-break comparison leader
Post Office Travel Money’s 2026 City Costs Barometer names Sarajevo the cheapest city break in its comparison. The barometer compares 12 everyday tourist items across 50 European cities for two people. It is a useful signal for a couple planning a city break, not a global ranking, a solo-traveler budget, or proof that Sarajevo is cheapest once flights from any particular origin are included. Its appeal is also more than price: Sarajevo offers historic streets and a distinctive mix of cultural influences within a compact city setting.
Sofia, Bulgaria: a practical budget base
Lonely Planet identifies Sofia as a budget destination for first-time budget travelers in Europe, pointing to inexpensive transport and accommodation, local cuisine, and the option to connect the city by rail as part of a multi-city trip. That combination can help travelers build variety into a trip without relying entirely on flights. Check the cost and timetable of each onward leg separately; a rail connection is a useful option, not evidence that every route is cheap or convenient.

More places to consider beyond Europe
Monde du Voyage’s 2026 editorial selection names Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Albania, Georgia, Peru, Colombia, the Philippines, Mexico, and Portugal as budget-travel ideas across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. These are examples for further comparison, not results from one standardized cost basket. The list alone does not establish which place is cheapest for your dates, accommodation style, or home airport.
For broader context, FOREX says its 2026 Travel Index compares price levels in more than 95 countries. Its city-index description says it compares typical food, drink, transport, and tips in 85 major cities. Those scopes can help frame a value search, but they are not directly interchangeable with Post Office Travel Money’s two-person city-break basket or Lonely Planet’s daily spending categories.
How to compare destinations before booking
- Set your traveler profile. Decide whether you are traveling solo or as a couple, whether a hostel or private room suits you, and whether you will travel independently or through a package. Costs for a two-person city break are not a reliable substitute for a solo daily budget.
- Compare the same local costs. For each candidate, check lodging, meals, local transport, and the sights or activities you actually plan to do. Separate free attractions from paid admissions so a low headline budget does not hide activity costs.
- Price the trip from your own origin. Add outbound airfare and any long-distance transfer as separate line items. A destination with inexpensive daily spending may still be costly to reach from your home airport.
- Use your actual dates. Compare peak and shoulder-season dates where possible, and check prices for the specific lodging and transport you would book. A general seasonal estimate is not a substitute for live availability.
- Build a complete total. Multiply destination spending by the number of days, then add flights, transfers, travel insurance, and any applicable visa costs. Keep a margin for exchange-rate changes and expenses outside the core basket.
Which destination is the best fit?
- For a European city break for two: Sarajevo is the strongest named comparison result, specifically in Post Office Travel Money’s 2026 basket.
- For a first Europe trip with the option of rail onward: Sofia is a practical candidate in Lonely Planet’s 2026 guide.
- For a wider search: Treat the destinations in Monde du Voyage’s selection as a shortlist to price against your origin and travel dates, rather than as a ranked list.
The best-value choice is the one that stays affordable after you price the same comfort level, activities, dates, and route from home—not simply the place with the lowest local daily-spend estimate.
