Bayer Crop Science is developing a connected portfolio of agricultural technologies—not a single innovation. Its work spans seeds and traits, chemical and biological crop protection, digital tools such as FieldView, and agronomic support. The company’s September 2, 2026 update describes a mix of products already commercializing, planned launches and earlier-stage research; those categories should not be mistaken for equivalent levels of availability or proof.
What Bayer Crop Science is innovating
Bayer frames its agricultural work as a combination of tools adapted to crops, regions and field conditions. Its Crop Science overview groups the portfolio around seeds and traits, crop protection, digital farming and agronomic expertise. Its pipeline description also includes biological products and presents these areas as parts of an integrated approach to farm problems.
In practice, that means innovation can refer to breeding a new hybrid, engineering or editing a trait, discovering a crop-protection mode of action, developing a biological input, or combining field data with farm decisions. A product’s crop, target market and development stage matter as much as its technology label.
Seeds, traits and breeding
Bayer says its breeding programs cover corn, soy, cotton, vegetables, canola, wheat and rice. Its pipeline description identifies advanced breeding, genetics, genomics, biotechnology and data science, along with gene and protein technologies, RNA interference (RNAi) and genome editing. The company does not say that every method is used for every crop, or that every pipeline project is available to growers.

#1 Best Overall
In its September 2026 update, Bayer said its AI-enabled precision-breeding platform had achieved a twofold historical genetic-gain rate and a threefold faster time to market compared with the company’s stated benchmarks. These are Bayer’s platform comparisons, not independent measurements supplied with the announcement. Bayer also said it introduces 400 to 500 new hybrids and varieties annually; that figure describes its stated yearly introductions, not a count of products that are all new to every market.
Traits announced for future markets
Bayer described Vyconic as a planned soybean trait stack with tolerance to five herbicides, expected for introduction in the United States and Canada in 2027. Intacta 5+ was described as a planned Brazil offering for the 2027/2028 growing season, combining tolerance to five herbicides with insect-protection traits. Bayer said neither was then available for commercial sale or planting; commercialization depends on several factors, including regulatory completion. The timing and geography are therefore important qualifications, not a promise of worldwide availability.
The same update said Bayer was developing genome-edited soy with altered plant architecture intended to improve standability. It remains a development project in the announcement, rather than a product identified as ready for sale.

Crop protection: chemistry and discovery
Bayer describes crop protection as addressing weeds, diseases and pests through chemical, biological and digital innovation. Its pipeline highlights Plenexos and CropKey, but they represent different kinds of work: one is a crop-protection product reported as entering markets, while the other is a discovery platform for developing future products.

Bayer reported that Plenexos had been introduced in Colombia, with Mexico, Brazil and the United States set to follow. For a specific comparison involving whiteflies in soy in Brazil, the company said Plenexos could use up to 75% less active ingredient than imidacloprid. Bayer’s footnote ties that result to more than 600 internal and external trials conducted in Brazil from 2021 through 2025: the stated rates were 24 grams of active ingredient per hectare for Plenexos and 100 grams per hectare for imidacloprid.
This is a Bayer-reported rate comparison for that pest, crop, country and trial set. It does not establish that Plenexos uses less active ingredient for every pest or crop, produces better results in all settings, or has a lower overall environmental impact.
CropKey and the discovery pipeline
Bayer describes CropKey as an AI-powered discovery approach that uses biological insights and evaluates efficacy, safety and sustainability early in research. The company reported more than 15 novel crop-protection modes of action in its research pipeline and a broad-spectrum soybean fungicide in Phase II. These are pipeline-stage claims: they do not establish regulatory approval, commercial availability or demonstrated field performance.
Biological solutions
Bayer’s pipeline page describes agricultural biologicals as including biocontrol and biostimulant approaches. The examples it names include pheromone products, botanicals and plant extracts, and synthetic biology. The company presents biologicals as additions to integrated crop management alongside seeds and traits, digital tools and chemical crop protection.

Digital farming and the Preceon corn system
Bayer says its digital tools can combine information from farm equipment, satellites, field sensors, irrigation systems, drones and other sources. It identifies FieldView as a platform for data-driven on-farm decisions; the company’s agricultural products page provides its product context.
Preceon is Bayer’s digitally enabled short-stature corn system, which the company says embeds FieldView capabilities. In its September 2026 release, Bayer said Preceon was delivering on-farm value in Mexico, Italy, Spain and the United States, and that commercial launch in Argentina was beginning that year. Bayer describes potential agronomic benefits that include protection from weather extremes, flexibility for higher-density planting, easier access for standard equipment and a larger root system. Those are company-described features and intended benefits; they should not be read as independently established yield gains.
Bayer set a target of reaching 26 million acres of Preceon market penetration by 2035. That is a future company target, not acreage already adopted. The September update also said the system was among the products beginning commercialization, a stage distinct from a target for eventual penetration.

What the September 2026 launch claims mean
Bayer’s September 2, 2026 announcement said the company expected 10 blockbuster products over 10 years. It defines a blockbuster as a product expected to deliver peak sales potential of at least €500 million. The figure is a company forecast based on expected peak sales potential, not realized sales or a guarantee that every product will reach that level.
The update combines launch news with forward-looking pipeline and commercial claims. The distinctions matter, especially for readers assessing whether a technology is available, whether it has evidence of a particular benefit, or whether a projected market outcome has already occurred.

How to assess Bayer’s innovation claims
Bayer’s corporate overview, pipeline page and September 2, 2026 release are useful for identifying the company’s portfolio, announced plans and stated claims. They are company sources, not independent assessments of efficacy, safety, environmental outcomes or commercial prospects. For a practical comparison, keep four questions separate:
- What is the technology? Distinguish a seed or trait from a crop-protection input, biological product, digital platform or integrated system.
- Where and for which crop? A market introduction or trial result in one country and crop does not establish availability or performance elsewhere.
- What stage has it reached? A marketed or commercializing product is different from a planned future introduction, a development project or an early research pipeline.
- What kind of claim is being made? An intended agronomic benefit, a company-reported trial comparison, an adoption target and a peak-sales estimate are different evidence categories.
For example, the Plenexos figure is a reported active-ingredient rate comparison under specified trial conditions, while Preceon’s acreage number is a future target. Neither should be generalized into a broad conclusion about the company’s environmental performance or growers’ financial returns. Bayer’s stated aim is to connect seed and crop-protection innovation into whole-farm solutions, but the available company material does not independently establish the return on investment for a particular farm.
