Baselworld did not return in 2022. MCH Group announced in June 2021 that the watch and jewellery fair would come back under its historic name with a redesigned format, but cancelled the planned spring event that November, saying it needed more time to reshape the show and understand the needs of potential participants.
What the June 2021 announcement proposed
The announcement described a platform aimed less at a traditional showcase for major watch brands and more at smaller and specialized watch and jewellery manufacturers, gemstone traders, and independent retailers. Monochrome Watches reported that MCH Group envisioned retailers getting efficient access to a broad range of manufacturers.
The plan also called for a digital platform serving the watches, jewellery, and gems industry throughout the year, supplemented by live events. MCH Group said the dates for the proposed spring 2022 event would be coordinated with Geneva trade fairs. These were announced intentions; they do not establish that the digital platform, live events, or a 2022 fair took place. Monochrome Watches’ June 23, 2021 report described the proposal.

This is a comparison of the announced concept with the previous exhibition model, not a comparison of two completed editions. Monochrome reported that some brands had raised concerns about format, modernity, and cost; those characterizations are the publication’s account, not a complete record of every departure or dispute.

Why Baselworld’s 2022 return was cancelled
In November 2021, MCH Group cancelled the planned spring 2022 edition. National Jeweler reported that the organizer cited continuing COVID-related uncertainty and the need for more time to reformulate the show. The company said it had studied the watches, jewellery, and gems ecosystem and concluded that a business-to-business-to-consumer platform for mid-sized and specialized manufacturers and independent retailers could have a market, but that participant needs required further analysis.
“But their needs must be analyzed in more detail. This means we need to have significantly more time to get there.”

The statement was from MCH Group CEO Beat Zwahlen, as quoted by National Jeweler on November 15, 2021. National Jeweler also reported that managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff was leaving. MCH Group did not give a new return date, and the report did not establish whether Baselworld would return later.

- 2018: Swatch Group announced it would leave Baselworld; Monochrome also reported departures by other companies, including Seiko and Breitling.
- 2019: The last completed Baselworld edition took place.
- 2020: The edition was cancelled. Monochrome reported that Rolex, Patek Philippe, Tudor, Chanel, and Chopard announced their departure in April and moved to a Geneva-based fair.
- 2021: The scheduled edition was cancelled. In June, MCH Group announced a redesigned Baselworld for March or April 2022.
- November 2021: MCH Group cancelled the proposed spring 2022 event and did not announce a replacement date.
