For eligible deposits at federally insured institutions, a bank and a credit union generally offer the same standard federal protection: up to $250,000 per depositor or member-owner, per insured institution, per ownership category. The key is not which type of institution you choose; it is whether that specific institution is federally insured and how your accounts are titled and combined.
Does federal insurance make banks and credit unions equally safe?
For the specific risk of losing eligible deposits when an insured institution fails, federal insurance provides comparable basic protection. The FDIC insures eligible deposits at FDIC-insured banks; the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) insures eligible share accounts at federally insured credit unions. Both agencies state that their federal insurance has the backing of the full faith and credit of the United States. FDIC insurance FAQs and NCUA share insurance guidance explain the respective programs.
That parity is not a claim that every bank and credit union has identical financial health, nor does deposit insurance assess service, fees, access, or account terms. The available federal insurance rules establish the protection for eligible deposits, not a current ranking of the likelihood that one type of institution will fail.
How much is insured at a bank or credit union?
The standard federal limit is $250,000 at each insured institution for each ownership category. At a bank, the limit is generally per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. At a credit union, it is generally per member-owner, per federally insured credit union, per ownership category. The FDIC and NCUA describe these comparable limits in their consumer guidance: FDIC deposit insurance and NCUA share insurance.

The limit applies to the combined eligible balances in a category at one institution—not separately to every account number or branch. For example, opening several accounts in the same ownership category at the same institution does not automatically create several $250,000 limits. Accounts held at separate branches of the same insured bank also do not receive separate limits. Different ownership categories may qualify for separate coverage, but each category has specific requirements and account-record rules.
What can count as a separate ownership category?
Common categories include single-owner accounts, qualifying joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, and qualifying trust accounts. The rules differ by category and institution, so do not assume that changing an account title alone creates extra coverage. See the agencies’ detailed rules and examples at the FDIC and NCUA.

What happens to deposits if an insured institution fails?
Federal insurance protects covered deposits only up to the applicable limit. At a federally insured credit union, NCUA says the Share Insurance Fund covers principal and posted dividends through the closing date, subject to the limit. The NCUA states: “No one has lost a single penny of insured deposits at a federally insured credit union.” That statement concerns insured deposits; it does not guarantee recovery of uninsured balances or predict future outcomes.
Amounts above the applicable limit may be uninsured. Because ownership category and account records affect the calculation, use the official coverage information and confirm your circumstances with the institution or relevant agency if your balances approach or exceed the limit. The FDIC explains depositor treatment after a bank failure at When a Bank Fails: Facts for Depositors, Creditors, and Borrowers.

How to verify that your institution is federally insured
Check the exact institution rather than relying on the words “bank” or “credit union.” FDIC insurance applies to deposits at FDIC-insured banks; NCUA share insurance applies to federally insured credit unions. Some state-chartered credit unions use private insurance instead. NCUA says that private coverage is not backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, so confirm the insurer and terms if the institution is not federally insured.
- For a bank, verify its FDIC-insured status through the FDIC’s deposit insurance information.
- For a credit union, check its federal share-insurance status and coverage details through the NCUA.
- Confirm that the account is an eligible deposit or share account and that its ownership category and combined balance fit within the limit.
Which products are not protected as deposits?
A product does not become federally insured just because a bank or credit union sells it. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, insurance policies, and annuities are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance or NCUA share insurance; FDIC materials also exclude the contents of safe-deposit boxes. Check what the product actually is and how it is held rather than relying on the sales channel. See the FDIC’s deposit insurance overview and NCUA’s coverage guidance.
Quick Recap
How to compare your own coverage
- Identify the institution. Determine the legal institution holding the account and verify its FDIC or NCUA federal insurance status.
- Separate deposits from other products. Confirm that the balance is an eligible deposit or share account, not an investment or another excluded product.
- Group accounts by institution and ownership category. Add together accounts in the same category at that institution; do not count separate branches as separate institutions.
- Check the applicable limit and category rules. Compare the combined balance with the $250,000 standard limit, then review the agency’s rules for any category that may qualify for separate coverage.
- Ask for help if the calculation is uncertain. Use the FDIC or NCUA coverage resources and confirm account titling and records with the institution or agency, especially when balances are near or above the limit.
