As of October 3, 2026, we found no confirmation of a new widespread $0-balance outage. A third-party outage monitor was not detecting a current problem, but that is not an official bank status guarantee.
What happened during the October 2, 2024 Bank of America outage?
Customers reported trouble signing in to Bank of America online banking and, for some who could get in, balances displayed as $0 or otherwise appeared incorrect. Bank of America told CBS News: “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today,” the bank said in a statement. “These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.” CBS News reported the incident on October 2, 2024.
Contemporaneous coverage tracked DownDetector reports through the afternoon and evening. CBS News reported about 5,000 customer problem reports by 3 p.m. Eastern; Tom’s Guide later described more than 19,000 reports during the incident and a peak near 20,000 for roughly 20 minutes. These were user-submitted DownDetector reports, not a verified count of unique customers or an audited measure of the bank’s impact. Tom’s Guide’s live timeline said the bank had not explained the cause in the statements it reviewed.
Did customers’ money disappear?
A $0 balance displayed during an access or balance-information problem is not, by itself, proof that money was withdrawn or lost. The incident reports establish that customers encountered access trouble and incorrect-looking balances; they do not establish that the underlying account records showed funds had been removed. Review your transaction history when it is available, and treat an unfamiliar transaction as a separate issue to report to the bank.

Is Bank of America down right now?
As checked on October 3, 2026, the crowdsourced status page Down for Everyone or Just Me was not detecting a current Bank of America problem; it listed June 20, 2026, as its latest detected outage. That is a third-party signal based on reports, not a Bank of America-operated status feed. The bank’s newsroom, reviewed the same day, had no incident-specific announcement about a new October 2026 $0-balance outage. Check the bank’s own channels for the latest official information; an individual login or account issue may occur even when no widespread outage is detected.
Down for Everyone or Just Me’s Bank of America status page and the Bank of America newsroom provide different kinds of information: the former reflects third-party user reports, while the latter publishes bank communications.

What to do if your Bank of America balance shows $0
- Check through a known official channel. Use the Bank of America site or app you normally use, or call the number printed on your bank card or statement. The bank lists 800.432.1000 for online banking support on its Online Banking & Bill Pay Customer Service page.
- Check transaction history once it loads. If the balance still looks wrong, compare it with the posted and pending transactions rather than assuming that a temporary display issue explains every discrepancy.
- Report an actual transaction error promptly. If you see a transaction you do not recognize or believe an electronic transfer is wrong, contact the bank using its official error-reporting procedures. The Online Banking Service Agreement provides the bank’s contact and reporting information.
- Protect your credentials. Do not share passwords, PINs, Social Security numbers, or account details with people offering help in social-media comments or unsolicited messages. Bank of America says it will not ask for those details through Facebook, Instagram, or X; see its customer service and contact guidance.
What is known about the cause and impact?
The reviewed contemporaneous coverage did not establish a technical cause, a cyberattack, or a confirmed total number of affected customers. Bank of America’s statement described an access and balance-information issue and said it had largely been resolved at the time; DownDetector report totals are not a substitute for an audited customer-impact figure. Avoid treating an unexplained display problem as evidence of hacking.

Bank of America offers account alerts, including alerts related to balances and deposits. They can help you monitor activity, but the bank does not describe them as a fix for outages or display errors. Details are available through the bank’s official customer service page.
