BAE Systems announced Alistair Castle’s appointment as Vice President and General Manager for India in December 2015, with the role taking effect on January 1, 2016. He was to lead the company’s India business operations, succeeding Mark Simpkins. The announcement does not establish whether Castle holds the position today.
When did Alistair Castle take up the India role?
BAE Systems announced the appointment in December 2015, and Castle was due to begin on January 1, 2016. The appointment details were reported by SP’s M.A.I. and Aviation Defence Universe.
What was Castle’s role and who did he report to?
Castle was expected to lead BAE Systems’ India business operations and join the BAE Systems India Board, chaired by Deepak Parekh. He was to report to John Brosnan, then the company’s Regional Managing Director for India and South East Asia. These details describe the planned reporting structure in the 2015 announcement, not necessarily the company’s current organization.
Who did Castle replace?
Castle succeeded Mark Simpkins, who was moving to new responsibilities in the Middle East after his second tenure in India. Before the appointment, Castle was based in Kuala Lumpur as Regional Vice President responsible for Group Business Development in South East Asia.

What India business plans were in view at the time?
The appointment was framed around BAE Systems’ plans to build new partnerships and strengthen existing ones in India, in the context of the government’s Make in India initiative. Brosnan said, as quoted in Aviation Defence Universe’s December 17, 2015 report: “Alistair comes to India at a very exciting time for the sector and for the Company. We are on the cusp of launching new partnerships and strengthening existing ones to Make in India and Alistair will serve a critical role in shaping our future growth in India.”
A January–February 2016 report in Vayu Aerospace described a proposed Indian assembly, integration and testing facility for M777 ultra-light howitzers, as well as negotiations with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for a 20-aircraft Hawk advanced jet trainer contract. The 20-aircraft figure referred to negotiations reported at the time; it is not evidence of a completed order. Likewise, the report’s account of a proposed facility does not establish that the plan was completed.

Is Castle still BAE Systems’ India head?
The appointment-era sources establish that Castle was named to the role effective January 1, 2016, but they do not confirm his current position. BAE Systems’ current executive committee and board information does not resolve his status in the India organization. A current company confirmation would be needed before describing him as its present India head.
