B2B vs. B2C: A Detailed Comparison

B2B means a business sells to another business; B2C means a business sells directly to an individual consumer for personal use. The customer and purpose of a particular purchase—not the product category or a company’s permanent identity—determine which model applies. That distinction shapes how buyers evaluate an offer, who participates in the decision, and what marketing and sales process makes sense.

What do B2B and B2C mean?

B2B stands for business-to-business: a commercial transaction in which one business supplies another. Examples include a company purchasing services that support its operations, a manufacturer selling inputs to another company, or a wholesaler supplying a retailer. B2C stands for business-to-consumer: a business sells a good or service directly to an individual for personal use.

The same product can be sold through both models. When a manufacturer sells a bulk order to a retailer, that transaction is B2B. When the retailer sells one item to an individual shopper, that transaction is B2C. Classify the transaction by its immediate customer and the purpose of the purchase.

These are useful categories, not labels that must describe an entire company. A brand may sell wholesale to businesses and also sell directly to consumers. For an overview of business purchasing and resale contexts, see Salesforce’s B2B commerce guide; HubSpot also outlines common business-to-business relationships in its B2B glossary.

How B2B and B2C buying differ

The biggest practical difference is often the buying context. Organizational purchases can require input from several people and formal review; consumer purchases are often more direct. These are tendencies, not rules: a small business buying routine supplies is still making a B2B purchase, while an individual choosing an expensive or consequential product may research options carefully and take time to decide.

Dimension B2B B2C
Customer and purpose Another business, buying for operations, production, services, or resale. An individual consumer, buying for personal use.
Decision participants May involve multiple stakeholders, decision-makers, and approvers. Often an individual decides directly, though other people may influence the choice.
Evaluation and approval May include formal evaluation, presentations or demonstrations, negotiation, and procurement or approval steps. Often more direct, but the research and decision process can lengthen for costly or consequential purchases.
Value and terms Some deals involve high-cost or recurring contracts; terms and transaction size vary by business and purchase. Some purchases are quick and straightforward; price, size, and complexity vary widely.
Marketing focus Address the organization’s needs and the business outcomes relevant to the people involved. Explain benefits and terms relevant to an individual’s personal use.

Salesforce’s B2B sales guide, published April 4, 2025, describes multi-stakeholder decisions, approval chains, negotiations, and longer close times as common features of B2B sales. HubSpot likewise describes organizational decision-making and longer evaluation in its B2B glossary. Neither source establishes a single typical cycle length that applies across industries.

What the buying process means for sales

For B2B sales

When a purchase involves several people or formal review, a salesperson needs to understand both the buying group and the steps required to complete the purchase. Map participants’ responsibilities and concerns, clarify procurement and approval requirements, and explain how the offer addresses the organization’s stated needs. Evidence should be relevant to the business outcome under consideration, rather than relying on a generic pitch.

For B2C sales

For a direct consumer purchase, make the offer easy to evaluate: explain what the product or service does, its price, how delivery works, and what service or return terms apply. Keep the path to a decision clear. More research may be appropriate when a purchase is expensive, complex, or personally consequential.

These are practical responses to different buying contexts, not guarantees that a particular sales approach will perform better. The right process depends on the product, the risk of getting the decision wrong, the buyer, and the way the offer is delivered.

How marketing should change

B2B and B2C marketing differ mainly in whom they address and why that person is buying. In B2B, the audience consists of people acting in professional roles on behalf of an organization. Messaging should connect to the organization’s needs and the outcomes those people are evaluating. In B2C, messaging speaks to individuals considering a purchase for themselves or, in some cases, friends or family.

This does not mean B2B decisions are purely rational and B2C decisions purely emotional. People make decisions in both settings. The useful distinction is the job the purchase needs to do: an organizational need in one transaction, personal use in another. Salesforce’s B2B marketing overview discusses business audiences and procurement contexts, while HubSpot’s B2C glossary describes marketing to individual consumers.

Sales channels, relationships, and metrics

There is no channel that belongs exclusively to either model. A business may sell through representatives, online self-service, or a combination; the useful choice depends on what customers need to understand, the complexity of the purchase, and the support involved. Gartner’s April 9, 2025 article, “Build Sales and Marketing Alignment to Exceed Revenue Goals,” reports that 42% of buyers said they received high-quality deals through traditional methods involving a sales representative, compared with 16% through online self-service. The article result does not provide the study’s sample, geography, or methodology, so the figures should not be read as a universal preference or as a direct B2B-versus-B2C comparison.

Relationship and retention efforts should likewise reflect the actual purchase. An organization managing ongoing business accounts may need to coordinate contacts and follow-up across a buying group. A consumer business may focus on helping an individual understand an offer and have a reliable post-purchase experience. For either model, choose measures that match the business’s goals and buying path—for example, tracking account progress in a multi-person sale or monitoring consumer purchase and repeat-purchase patterns. There is no single metric set implied by the B2B or B2C label.

How to identify the model for a specific transaction

  1. Identify the immediate customer. Is the buyer another business, or an individual buying as a consumer?
  2. Clarify the purchase purpose. Is the purchase for organizational use, operations, production, or resale—or for personal use?
  3. Describe the buying path. Note who evaluates, approves, pays, and uses the product. These roles may be distributed in an organization and may overlap for an individual.
  4. Apply the label to that transaction. If a company sells through both routes, describe the particular B2B or B2C channel rather than assigning the company one permanent label.

What B2B versus B2C does not tell you

The labels alone do not establish a transaction’s size, profitability, sales-cycle length, or the number of decision-makers. Nor do they reveal which marketing or sales channel will work best. Those depend on the specific customer, product, purchase risk, delivery economics, and route to market. Treat the model as a starting point for understanding the buyer—not as a substitute for examining how that buyer actually purchases.
