On March 26, 2024, AWS published a guide developed with WAX for deploying a WAX blockchain node on Amazon Web Services using the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK). It makes self-hosting WAX infrastructure on AWS easier; it does not establish that WAX became a natively supported, fully managed network in Amazon Managed Blockchain.
What AWS and WAX actually made available
The documented deliverable is an AWS CDK deployment application for running WAX node infrastructure on AWS. CDK defines cloud resources as code, and the deployment uses CloudFormation to provision resources such as Amazon EC2 compute and Amazon EBS storage. AWS also describes using CloudWatch for monitoring. The guide is a practical route to self-hosting, not evidence of a new, turnkey Web3 game platform.
That distinction matters because hosting a blockchain node on AWS is not the same as AWS operating a managed WAX endpoint for customers. The guide’s approach leaves the AWS account holder responsible for the deployed infrastructure and its operation.
Not the same as Amazon Managed Blockchain
Some coverage linked the collaboration to Amazon Managed Blockchain (AMB), but AWS’s WAX deployment guide describes an EC2/CDK setup. AWS’s AMB Access and Query announcement identifies support for other blockchain networks and does not establish native WAX support. The careful description is that AWS provides a documented way to host WAX nodes on its cloud, not that WAX is an AMB-supported network.

AWS offers a broader portfolio of infrastructure and services for blockchain applications, but that does not mean it manages every public blockchain. Its Web3 overview describes that wider cloud context.
Why WAX is aimed at games
WAX is a public blockchain built around digital assets, NFTs, collectibles, marketplaces and gaming economies. WAX describes its network as using delegated proof of stake and the Antelope framework. Its documentation promotes high throughput and low-cost or feeless transactions; those are WAX’s claims, not independent performance results. See WAX’s network overview and description of its rationale and capabilities.
For a game studio, a blockchain-recorded item could potentially be displayed, traded or used in more than one application. Tokens and NFTs can also support player-facing economies and marketplace activity. Those possibilities depend on the game’s contracts and design, wallet adoption, asset standards, marketplace liquidity, security and other games’ willingness to recognize the assets. A token does not make an item automatically useful elsewhere, and a blockchain record does not oblige a publisher to support an item in gameplay.

Likewise, “feeless” does not mean that a game has no costs. Cloud infrastructure, application development, wallet and marketplace services, and any resource or transaction requirements still need to be considered. A studio should test actual transaction behavior and user experience against its design rather than treating network marketing claims as a workload guarantee.
What AWS supplies—and what remains WAX-specific
AWS supplies general-purpose cloud infrastructure around a node and a game backend: compute, persistent storage, provisioning, networking, access controls, monitoring and related services. A studio can also use AWS services for databases, APIs, queues, analytics and content delivery, but those are architectural choices, not all required parts of the node deployment.
WAX supplies the blockchain ecosystem and gaming-oriented tools described in the AWS guide, including My Cloud Wallet, single sign-on and OAuth, a developer portal, a random-number service, a cross-chain bridge, an explorer, and token and NFT infrastructure. These do not become AWS-managed services simply because a node is hosted on AWS. WAX documentation discusses interoperability through the Cloud Wallet Bridge and Antelope IBC; supported chains and behavior are implementation-specific and should be checked against current WAX interoperability documentation.

How the CDK deployment works
The guide uses infrastructure as code to standardize provisioning and reduce manual setup. Its example configuration uses a C5A 2xLarge EC2 instance, a 2 TiB EBS gp3 volume and 5,000 provisioned IOPS. Those are example settings from AWS’s March 2024 guide, not a universal production recommendation or a current sizing prescription. Workload, node type, chain growth and required API capacity can change the right configuration.
The setup can populate node data from a WAX-provided snapshot or sync the chain from the beginning. After initial data is in place, the node still has to catch up with newer blocks before it is current. AWS says a full sync can take about a week; the time will depend on the environment and chain state.
API node or SHIP node?
The guide distinguishes API nodes from SHIP nodes. An API node is intended for applications that query or interact with WAX. A SHIP node provides state-history access for deeper data workloads and may suit indexing, analytics or specialized applications. The choice depends on what data the game needs and how it will consume it; a game does not automatically need to operate either node type itself.

Snapshot synchronization or full synchronization?
| Approach | What it does | Trade-off | Fit described by AWS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapshot | Downloads and extracts node data from a snapshot, then synchronizes newer blocks. | Faster to start, but requires trusting the snapshot source and its contents. | AWS says this is suitable for most games and decentralized applications. |
| Full sync | Downloads and validates blockchain history transaction by transaction. | Offers more independent verification of history but takes longer; AWS estimates about one week. | AWS cites block explorers, highly sensitive data applications and some regulated use cases as possible reasons to choose it. |
Neither choice removes the need to monitor whether the node is current and serving the data the application expects. A snapshot’s speed is useful only if the studio accepts its trust assumptions; a full sync’s verification benefit may not justify its initial wait for every game workload.
What the deployment does not build for a game
The CDK application addresses node infrastructure. A studio still has to design and operate the application layers that turn a blockchain into a usable game feature:
- Wallet connection, account creation, sign-in and recovery flows that players can understand.
- Smart contracts and transaction logic for assets, rewards or marketplace activity.
- Metadata storage and indexing so game clients can find and render items.
- Backend validation, caching and handling of pending, delayed or failed transactions.
- Anti-cheat systems and protection against replay, fraud and manipulation of game events.
- Key management, endpoint security, customer support and procedures for asset or account problems.
- Product, legal and consumer-protection reviews for token economies, trading and player-owned assets.
For many games, it is sensible to keep fast-changing gameplay state in conventional backend systems and use the chain only for ownership, optional rewards or settlement. That limits the latency and rollback constraints of putting core gameplay on a public ledger.

Costs and operational responsibilities
There is no reliable single price for “a WAX node on AWS” without a workload and deployment model. The guide’s example includes substantial compute, storage and provisioned I/O, and a production bill may also include data transfer, public IPv4 where applicable, CloudWatch logs and metrics, snapshots, backups, networking and game-backend services. Total cost depends on AWS Region, instance family, uptime, storage growth, provisioned IOPS, traffic and backup policy.
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with the intended design, then check the current rates for EC2, EBS and CloudWatch. Pricing and regional availability can change; avoid treating the 2024 guide’s hardware example as a quoted operating cost.
Self-hosting also transfers day-to-day operational work to the studio. The team remains responsible for sizing, security groups and permissions, software upgrades, node health, disk capacity, backups and recovery, alerting, failover and incident response. Infrastructure as code makes deployment more repeatable; it does not provide a managed service or eliminate production operations.
Production checks before exposing an endpoint
- Restrict network access and use least-privilege IAM roles and credentials.
- Monitor node lag, CPU, memory, disk use and disk I/O; alert before storage fills or the node falls behind.
- Define upgrade, backup, restore and snapshot-validation procedures.
- Protect public endpoints from overload and decide how to fail over during a region or instance outage.
- Keep secrets out of application code and logs, and set log retention intentionally.
Self-host a node or use a provider?
A studio does not need to run its own node merely because its game uses WAX. An existing WAX node or RPC provider can be a faster, lower-operations option for a prototype or a product with modest query needs. The trade-off is less control over capacity, routing, availability and data locality. Provider availability and pricing should be assessed directly; they can change.

| Approach | Advantages | Costs and trade-offs | More suitable when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted WAX node or RPC provider | Quick start and less infrastructure maintenance. | Reliance on a vendor’s uptime, capacity, routing and terms; less control. | The game is a prototype, traffic is limited, or the team lacks node-operations expertise. |
| Self-host on AWS | More control over deployment, networking, monitoring and data access; fits existing AWS operations. | Ongoing compute, storage and operations work, plus responsibility for outages and security. | The studio has AWS and node expertise and needs dedicated capacity, custom data access or tighter control. |
| Hybrid | Hosted RPC for routine traffic with an independent node or indexer for verification, analytics or failover. | More moving parts and potentially duplicated infrastructure costs. | The studio needs a compromise between operational simplicity and independent access. |
| Conventional backend for gameplay | Lower latency and simpler rollback for core game state; blockchain can be limited to optional ownership or settlement. | Fewer on-chain mechanics and no automatic transferability for off-chain assets. | Gameplay value does not depend on transferable assets or public-chain settlement. |
Self-hosting on AWS is most compelling for a team that already runs AWS workloads and needs control over node placement, access or custom indexing. It is a poor fit if the project is an early experiment, the team cannot monitor and respond to failures, or the expected activity does not justify always-on compute and storage.
Quick Recap
Risks that a deployment template cannot solve
- Reliability: Insufficient compute, bandwidth or disk I/O can make a node fall behind; a full disk or overloaded API can disrupt the game.
- Data trust and recovery: A snapshot may be stale, unavailable or corrupted, while weak backup and restore plans can lengthen an outage.
- Security and permanence: Exposed credentials, flawed contracts or poorly validated events can put assets and game logic at risk; blockchain transactions may not be reversible.
- Interoperability: Bridge support does not guarantee that another game, wallet or marketplace will understand an asset or preserve its utility.
- Metadata and publisher control: On-chain ownership can persist even if centrally hosted metadata disappears or a publisher stops recognizing an item in its game.
- Player experience: Wallet setup, transaction friction and account recovery can cause users to abandon a game, and player-owned assets complicate refunds, fraud handling and moderation.
- Cloud concentration: Hosting on one cloud region or provider creates its own availability dependency unless the architecture includes tested alternatives.
