Skillsoft’s latest North American survey reported average salaries of $148,261 for AWS-certified respondents and $154,382 for Google Cloud-certified respondents. Those are averages among credential holders, not a causal salary premium, and the groups were small and not directly comparable.
The rational choice is the credential that matches your target role, employers’ cloud platform, location and current experience—then proves itself through production work, projects or measurable outcomes.
What the salary numbers actually measure
“Highest pay” can mean average annual salary, median base pay, total compensation, a premium over non-certified peers or a job-posting range. The figures available here are self-reported survey averages among people who hold a certification or certification category. They are not guaranteed salaries, entry-level rates or proof that passing an exam caused higher pay.
Skillsoft’s 2024–2025 IT Skills and Salary Report found the following North American category averages:
#1 Best Overall
| Certification category | Average salary | Respondents | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS-certified | $148,261 | 150 | Average for respondents with AWS certifications; not an AWS-wide salary rate |
| Google Cloud-certified | $154,382 | 91 | Average for respondents with Google Cloud certifications; not proof GCP causes higher pay |
The two samples can differ in seniority, job title, industry, geography, employer and credential mix. A security architect at a large financial institution is not a like-for-like comparison with a junior cloud administrator, even when both hold a cloud certificate.
Older Skillsoft rankings show why headlines say these providers “command” high pay. The 2023 report listed several Google Cloud Professional credentials above the AWS credentials included in that edition:
| Credential | Reported average | Respondents |
|---|---|---|
| Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer | $201,687 | 56 |
| Google Professional Data Engineer | $196,163 | 75 |
| Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer | $195,311 | 52 |
| Google Professional Cloud Architect | $194,612 | 137 |
| AWS Certified Solutions Architect–Professional | $173,260 | 69 |
| AWS Certified Security–Specialty | $161,681 | 68 |
These are historical survey results, not current offers or equivalent job evaluations. AWS says its Security–Specialty was identified as the highest-paying technical certification in Skillsoft’s October 2024 findings, but the cited AWS page does not provide a salary figure; it should not be turned into one.
Highest-paying AWS certifications—and who they suit
AWS has a broad certification portfolio. The professional and specialty exams are aimed at people already doing complex work, so their salary associations largely reflect the roles behind them.

Highest-paying Google Cloud certifications—and who they suit
Google Cloud’s older salary table is especially strong for professional security, data, networking and architecture credentials. It does not establish that GCP universally pays more than AWS.

Does Google Cloud pay more than AWS?
There is no universal winner. Google Cloud’s $154,382 category average exceeded AWS’s $148,261 in the 2024–2025 Skillsoft survey, but the samples were 91 and 150 respondents and represented different mixes of jobs and credentials. The result cannot show that choosing GCP produces a higher salary.
- Choose AWS when target employers, clients or internal systems are AWS-based, particularly for broad architecture, operations, security and DevOps opportunities.
- Choose Google Cloud when target work centers on GCP architecture, data, analytics, AI, security or Kubernetes-heavy platforms.
- Choose both only when the job requires it. A second provider is less valuable than deeper production ability in the platform you actually use.
Best credential by career goal
Cloud architecture
Start with AWS Solutions Architect–Associate if you are building AWS fundamentals, then consider the Professional exam after designing and operating complex systems. Google Professional Cloud Architect fits experienced engineers targeting GCP architecture roles.
Cloud security
AWS Security–Specialty and Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer are provider-specific choices for cloud security engineering. Governance, risk and security leadership roles may value CISSP or CISM more than another provider badge. Neither cloud exam replaces incident-response experience, IAM expertise or compliance work.
DevOps and platform engineering
AWS DevOps Engineer–Professional or Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer can validate platform knowledge when aligned with the employer. Pair either with Linux, networking, containers, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, observability and incident management. A CKA can complement both ecosystems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsData and machine learning
Google Professional Data Engineer, Professional Machine Learning Engineer, AWS Data Engineer–Associate and AWS Machine Learning Engineer–Associate are sensible role-aligned options. Employers still expect SQL, Python, distributed processing, data modeling, production pipelines and MLOps—not just a passing score.
How much experience do you need?
Eligibility to sit an exam is different from being employable in the role it describes.
- Beginners: Foundational certificates can organize learning, but basic IT, networking, Linux and scripting make an associate credential more useful.
- Practitioners: Associate credentials can confirm skills gained through labs or an operational job.
- Senior specialists: Professional and specialty exams make the most sense after meaningful production responsibility.
A professional-level certificate without professional-level experience rarely qualifies someone for a professional-level job. AWS’s stated guidance for Security–Specialty and DevOps Engineer–Professional illustrates the gap between exam preparation and workplace readiness.

Best Value
Expected value = realistic career or compensation benefit − exam and training costs − value of study time.
- Collect 20–30 local job postings for your target title and record the cloud platform, required skills, salary range and certification language.
- Price the exam, practice tests, training, lab subscriptions, retakes and any cloud usage. Personal labs can create unexpected usage charges.
- Estimate the time needed and the probability that the credential changes screening, promotion or project eligibility.
- Build evidence alongside study: an architecture diagram, Terraform repository, CI/CD pipeline, monitoring dashboard, security remediation or data pipeline.
- Recalculate after speaking with hiring managers or recruiters in your market.
AWS charges $100 for foundational, $150 for associate, and $300 for professional or specialty exams in the United States. Active AWS certification holders receive a 50% discount on their next AWS Certification exam. AWS credentials are generally valid for three years, with credential-specific rules. AWS announced in June 2026 that eligible holders may extend some certifications by one year through curated Skill Builder training and hands-on labs instead of retaking a full exam; check the applicable credential rules at AWS recertification and the announcement.
Google Cloud pricing and renewal terms should be checked on the live registration and certification pages before purchase.
What employers pay for beyond the badge
- Linux administration, networking and identity and access management
- Infrastructure as code, especially Terraform, and repeatable automation
- Containers, Kubernetes and secure CI/CD
- Python or another practical scripting language
- Monitoring, troubleshooting and incident response
- Security controls, compliance and cost optimization
- System design and documented production outcomes
A certificate can help with recruiter screening, promotion evidence, client trust or contract requirements. AWS describes certification as a way to validate skills and demonstrate expertise, not as a promise of higher pay; see the AWS certification overview.

Common mistakes when comparing cloud certifications
- Treating a survey maximum as the expected salary for a new certificate holder
- Comparing security, architecture and data credentials as if they measure the same job
- Ignoring country, region, industry, seniority and employer differences
- Choosing a professional exam before gaining hands-on cloud experience
- Confusing a training-course completion certificate with an official provider certification
- Ignoring Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform and vendor-neutral security credentials
- Using retired exam names or failing to check current exam guides at AWS’s exam-guide hub
- Ranking credentials by salary while ignoring the number of relevant jobs in your market
A practical decision rule
- Pick the job title you want, not the salary number you saw in a ranking.
- Identify which cloud that employer actually operates.
- Match the certification level to your experience.
- Select the specialization—security, architecture, networking, DevOps, data or ML—that the job rewards.
- Confirm local demand, total cost and maintenance obligations before paying.
- Produce demonstrable work that makes the certification credible.
The headline claim has a real basis: AWS and Google Cloud holders appear in high-paying survey categories, and several Google Professional credentials posted very high historical averages. But those figures describe experienced professionals in selected samples. Your best investment is the credential that opens a specific role in your market and is reinforced by practical, measurable cloud work.
