Avride launched autonomous sidewalk delivery robots through Uber Eats in Jersey City during the week of February 10, 2025. The initial service covered parts of downtown, including Hamilton Park, Historic Downtown, and the Waterfront. Eligible customers can choose a robot instead of a traditional courier—but the option is limited by the restaurant, address, operating zone, order, and robot availability.
As of the latest company updates available before August 18, 2026, Avride continued to list Jersey City as an active Uber Eats market and said its coverage had expanded toward Journal Square and McGinley Square. Those expansion and scale figures are company-reported, not independently audited.

What launched in Jersey City?
This is a delivery partnership, not a robotaxi service or a citywide replacement for human couriers.

The launch announcement did not disclose how many robots would operate in Jersey City. It also did not establish that robots would handle most Uber Eats orders or eliminate the need for delivery couriers.
Where do the robots operate?
The initial footprint was downtown Jersey City, specifically including:
- Hamilton Park
- Historic Downtown
- The Waterfront
Avride later said the coverage area had more than doubled by August 2025, extending from Historic Downtown toward Journal Square and McGinley Square. That does not mean every address in those neighborhoods qualifies. The actual service boundary can be narrower depending on the restaurant, delivery address, time, order type, and available robot.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most reliable way to check coverage is to open Uber Eats, enter the delivery address, select a participating restaurant, and look for an indication that an autonomous vehicle may deliver the order.
How to order an Avride robot delivery
- Open Uber Eats and enter your Jersey City delivery address.
- Choose a participating restaurant.
- Look for a notice saying that an autonomous vehicle may deliver the order.
- At checkout, select the Avride robot option if Uber Eats offers it.
- Track the order and robot in the Uber Eats app.
- Wait for the arrival notification.
- Go to the robot’s designated delivery location.
- Tap “Unlock” in the app to open the cargo compartment.
- Remove the order and rate the delivery in the app.
The robot waits for up to 10 minutes at the delivery location, according to Avride’s launch materials. Customers therefore need to be able to reach it promptly. A robot may stop at an accessible curbside or other designated point rather than entering an apartment building and bringing food to an individual door.
Do customers have to use a robot?
No. Avride described the robot as an optional fulfillment method when it appears in Uber Eats. Customers can generally choose a traditional courier instead, subject to the options and pricing shown in the live app.
The robot option may not appear even when a restaurant has participated previously. A nearby robot may be unavailable, the address may be outside the active zone, or the order may not meet operational requirements.

Do robot deliveries require a tip?
Avride says its robot deliveries do not require a tip and that tips will not be charged for those deliveries. That statement comes from Avride’s rollout materials; it should not be treated as a permanent rule for every Uber Eats market or future version of the app.
Customers should rely on the charges and tip controls displayed at the current Uber Eats checkout. Delivery, service, membership, restaurant, and other fees can vary independently of the delivery method.
Which restaurants participate?
The launch announcement named these initial restaurant examples:
- Jiangnan
- Rumi Turkish Grill
- Downtown Yogurt Jersey City
- Gulp
- Amiya
- Short Grain
Later Avride material mentioned additional Jersey City examples, including Jiangnan Fusion, Honshu Sushi, One Dee Siam, and Gulp. Avride also announced in September 2025 that the Grove Street Shake Shack location had joined the program.

Participation changes, and a restaurant’s inclusion does not guarantee that every order from that restaurant will be eligible for robot delivery. The live Uber Eats listing and checkout are the best sources for current availability.
What kind of robot is it?
Avride describes the machines as autonomous sidewalk robots that use cameras, sensors, and onboard processing to navigate sidewalks, crossings, and pedestrian environments.
In later company material, Avride reported that its robots can travel at up to 5 mph, operate for up to 12 hours on a charge, and generally work within a one- to two-mile radius. These are Avride’s stated operating specifications, not an independently verified Jersey City performance test.

“Autonomous” also does not necessarily mean entirely unsupervised. The available launch material does not fully explain remote monitoring, intervention procedures, staffing ratios, or escalation protocols when a robot encounters a problem.
The practical limitations customers should know
Apartment and secured-building access
The launch materials explain how to unlock the robot’s hatch, but they do not establish that the robots enter apartment buildings, use elevators, call residents, pass through secured lobbies, or navigate gates. Customers in high-rise buildings may need to meet the robot outside or at another accessible stopping point.
For a customer who needs true door-to-door handoff, a traditional courier may be more convenient.
The 10-minute pickup window
A human courier can sometimes wait, call, or leave food at a specified location. Avride says the robot waits for up to 10 minutes. Customers who cannot leave work, an apartment, or another appointment promptly should consider that constraint before selecting robot delivery.
Large, fragile, or temperature-sensitive orders
Small, stable orders are likely to be the simplest fit for a cargo compartment. The sources do not provide detailed capacity limits or food-temperature comparisons. Large multi-bag orders, delicate dishes, spill-prone items, or meals requiring special handling may be better suited to a human courier.
Sidewalk obstacles and bad weather
Robots must share sidewalks with pedestrians, bicycles, construction, parked vehicles, crowds, and inaccessible curb ramps. The reviewed sources do not provide a complete response protocol for blocked sidewalks, flooding, snow, vandalism, or damaged infrastructure.
Avride says newer deployments are designed to operate in rain, snow, and sub-freezing temperatures. That is a design claim, not a guarantee that service will continue during every Jersey City weather event.

What happens if something goes wrong?
The available launch information does not fully answer what happens when a robot cannot reach its destination, a customer misses the pickup window, or the robot is blocked or damaged. It also does not establish a public reporting process, compensation policy, or the division of responsibility between Avride and Uber.
For a missing, damaged, inaccessible, or incorrect order, customers should begin with Uber Eats support in the app rather than assuming Avride handles refunds directly.
Why Jersey City?
Avride presented Jersey City as a dense, walkable, restaurant-rich urban market. Short delivery distances, concentrated restaurants, and many nearby customers may make sidewalk robots more practical there than in spread-out suburban areas. That is a reasonable explanation for the market choice, but it is an analysis rather than a published Jersey City performance finding.
The city is also a useful test of how delivery robots interact with crowded sidewalks, apartment buildings, pedestrians, accessibility needs, and local expectations. The available sources do not establish the program’s fleet size, incident rate, remote-operator staffing, or local regulatory arrangements.
What does the rollout mean for delivery workers?
There is not enough public information to say that the robots will eliminate courier jobs, reduce courier income, or lower delivery costs in Jersey City. The sources do not quantify the share of deliveries assigned to robots or explain Uber’s dispatch rules for this market.
The more defensible interpretation is that robots add another fulfillment option for qualifying orders. Human couriers remain important when customers decline robot delivery, robots are unavailable, buildings are difficult to access, or an order needs human judgment.
Recommended Free Tools
The economic effect will depend on factors such as robot utilization, delivery density, pricing, restaurant demand, and how Uber allocates orders. The fact that Avride says robot orders do not require a tip may change the customer’s total cost and the economics of comparable courier deliveries, but the available sources do not quantify that effect.

What does it mean for restaurants?
Participating restaurants may gain another delivery option during periods when couriers are scarce, along with a potential marketing benefit from offering a visible new technology. The service is integrated into Uber Eats rather than requiring customers to buy or install separate hardware.
There are trade-offs. Restaurants must load and secure the food correctly, and robot capacity and route limits may restrict which orders qualify. Staff may also need a different handoff process. The reviewed sources do not disclose restaurant fees, contract terms, delivery savings, capacity limits, or food-temperature results.
Is robot delivery cheaper or faster?
Not necessarily—and there is no verified Jersey City price comparison in the available material. Customers should compare the actual Uber Eats checkout, including delivery, service, restaurant, membership, and other fees.
Avride has reported average delivery-time figures for its broader fleet, but those figures are not a guarantee for Jersey City. A blocked sidewalk, pedestrian congestion, weather, robot availability, or the need for remote assistance can affect an individual order.
Likewise, the launch materials do not establish that robots are safer than human couriers or that they will reduce emissions or congestion in Jersey City. Those conclusions would require market-specific, independently measured data.
The bottom line for Jersey City customers
Avride’s Jersey City service is a limited and potentially expanding delivery option inside Uber Eats—not universal robot delivery. It began downtown in February 2025 and was later reported to extend toward Journal Square and McGinley Square. Customers must check the live app to see whether a particular restaurant and address qualify.
Robot delivery may work well for a short-distance order when the customer can meet the robot outside within 10 minutes. A traditional courier may be preferable for secured buildings, customers who cannot leave promptly, large or fragile orders, and situations requiring a true doorstep handoff. Because prices, restaurant participation, and operating zones can change, the current Uber Eats checkout is more reliable than any static restaurant list.
