Avis disclosed unauthorized access to a business application in August 2024, and reporting indicated that personal information belonging to nearly 300,000 people may have been affected. The potentially exposed data included names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, driver’s-license information, and credit-card numbers and expiration dates.
The published deadline to file a claim in the related settlement was June 21, 2026, so that ordinary deadline has passed. Anyone seeking information about a possible late claim, settlement status, or distributions should use the official settlement website and contact the administrator through its published channels.

The available records do not establish that the attacker compromised Avis’s entire network, used ransomware, paid a ransom, or publicly posted the data. They also do not establish that vehicle systems, GPS or telematics systems, or physical rental operations were affected.
How many people may have been affected?
Early coverage described the incident as affecting “thousands” of Avis customers. A TechCrunch report said the potentially affected population was nearly 300,000 people.
That figure should be treated as a reported potential scale, not proof that every Avis customer was affected. The relevant group may include people whose information remained in the accessed application from earlier transactions. Renting a vehicle during August 3–6, 2024 does not by itself prove that a person was affected, and renting outside those dates does not necessarily rule it out.

The reported categories include:
| Category | Information reported as potentially involved |
|---|---|
| Contact information | Names, mailing addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers |
| Identity information | Dates of birth |
| Driver’s-license information | Driver’s-license numbers or other driver’s-license information |

The sources reviewed do not establish that Social Security numbers, card security codes, passwords, passport numbers, rental histories, vehicle-location data, or copies of physical licenses were exposed. They also do not establish that every exposed card was usable or that card fraud occurred.
Avis’s notice describes unauthorized access. The related litigation materials use stronger language, alleging that certain information was “exfiltrated.” Because Avis denied the plaintiffs’ allegations, it is more precise to describe this as a data-security incident involving unauthorized access and to attribute claims of exfiltration to the litigation materials.

Did Avis notify affected customers?
Avis said it sent breach-notification letters dated September 4, 2024. A notification may have arrived by mail rather than email, so customers should check both physical correspondence and older email records.
Not receiving a letter does not conclusively prove that no information was involved. However, an unsolicited message claiming to be from Avis or a settlement administrator should be treated cautiously. Do not provide a Social Security number, password, payment-card details, or a fee merely to verify eligibility or receive benefits.

What Avis customers should do now
1. Review bank and card activity
Check credit-card and bank statements for unfamiliar transactions. Contact the card issuer using the telephone number printed on the card or shown on a verified statement—not a link or number in an unsolicited message. Ask whether the card should be replaced if suspicious activity appears or if the issuer recommends replacement.
2. Freeze or monitor your credit
A credit freeze can help prevent new creditors from opening accounts in your name. Use the official pages for Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Obtain and review your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com, the official source for free reports from the three nationwide credit-reporting companies. A fraud alert is another option, particularly if you see signs of attempted identity theft.
3. Change reused passwords
Change any password reused on an Avis-related account or elsewhere, and enable multifactor authentication where available. The available sources do not say that passwords were exposed, but password reuse creates a separate risk that is worth addressing.
4. Watch for targeted phishing
Scammers may use rental dates, travel details, Avis branding, or settlement language to make messages appear credible. Avoid clicking unexpected links. Instead, type the known official website address into your browser or use contact details from an original notice.
5. Respond to possible driver’s-license misuse
If you see signs that your driver’s-license information has been misused, contact your state motor-vehicle agency. Ask what replacement or credential-monitoring options are available in your state. A state may not issue a new license number automatically; that depends on state rules and the circumstances.
If identity theft has already occurred, use the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance and preserve copies of notices, reports, statements, and communications.

What lawsuit and settlement followed the incident?
The litigation is identified as In re: Avis Rent A Car System, LLC Security Incident Litigation, case 2:24-cv-09243, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
The plaintiffs alleged that information including names, driver’s-license information, credit-card numbers and expiration dates, dates of birth, and phone numbers was exfiltrated. Avis disagreed with the allegations and denied wrongdoing. The settlement materials state that the court did not decide in favor of either side; a settlement is not an admission that Avis was liable.
Under the published settlement terms, eligible U.S. residents could seek reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses up to a stated maximum of $5,000, subject to possible pro-rata reduction. Eligible claimants could also seek a pro-rata cash payment from the settlement fund. The $5,000 figure was a ceiling for qualifying documented losses, not a guaranteed payment to every affected person.

Can you still file an Avis settlement claim?
The official settlement materials listed June 21, 2026 as the claim deadline. As of September 8, 2026, that ordinary deadline has passed. Do not rely on older articles that still present June 21 as an upcoming filing date.

- Contact the administrator using the published details: 1-888-818-4234 or In re: Avis Rent A Car System, LLC Security Incident, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

What remains uncertain?
The available materials do not identify the attacker, confirm ransomware, establish public disclosure of the data, quantify downstream identity theft, or show whether encryption keys were accessed. They also do not prove that every person who rented from Avis was affected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest conclusion is narrower: Avis reported unauthorized access to a business application during August 3–6, 2024; reporting indicated that nearly 300,000 people may have been involved; and the reported data categories included driver’s-license and credit-card information as well as ordinary contact and identity details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was my Social Security number exposed in the Avis breach?
The sources reviewed do not identify Social Security numbers as an exposed data category. Check your individual Avis notice for the information specifically associated with your record.

No. The affected information may have been retained from earlier transactions, and the access dates alone do not establish whether a particular person’s data was in the application.
Is the $5,000 settlement payment guaranteed?
No. The published terms described reimbursement of eligible, documented out-of-pocket losses up to $5,000, subject to possible pro-rata reduction, plus a possible separate pro-rata cash payment.
How can I tell whether an Avis settlement message is legitimate?
Do not use links in unexpected messages. Type the official settlement website into your browser, compare contact details with the published administrator information, and do not pay a fee or disclose passwords or unnecessary financial information.
