Avelo’s 2026 Retreat: Three Bases to Close, but “20+ Routes Cut” Is Unverified

Avelo named three bases for closure in January 2026, while its announcement confirmed schedule changes but did not provide a route-cut count.

Avelo announced plans to close three bases—not two—in January 2026: Mesa, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington. The company also confirmed near-term schedule changes, but its announcement did not list canceled routes or substantiate the claim that more than 20 routes were cut. For travelers, the key distinction is that closing a base does not necessarily mean ending all service at that airport.

What Avelo announced

In its January 6, 2026 announcement, Avelo said it planned to close its bases at Mesa, Arizona (AZA); Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina (RDU); and Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM). The airline described the changes as part of a balance-sheet transformation and network simplification. Those are Avelo’s stated reasons, not independent evidence about the company’s financial performance or the eventual execution of its plans.

Avelo said it was streamlining around four then-current bases: New Haven, Connecticut (HVN); Philadelphia/Delaware Valley (ILG); Charlotte/Concord, North Carolina (USA); and Central Florida/Lakeland (LAL). The company also planned to open a Dallas/McKinney, Texas base in late 2026.

Does “20+ routes cut” have a confirmed count?

No route-cut total is established by Avelo’s January announcement. It said that near-term schedule changes would affect many customer itineraries, but did not provide a route-by-route cancellation list or say that more than 20 routes were being cut. Without a reliable route-level source, “20+ routes cut” should be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed count.

The announcement did name some service it said would continue from the affected North Carolina airports. From RDU, Avelo listed flights to HVN and Rochester, New York (ROC). From ILM, it listed service to Nashville (BNA), HVN, Tampa (TPA) and Washington/Baltimore (BWI). Avelo did not say those were the only routes that would remain. The announcement therefore does not support treating either base closure as a complete withdrawal from its airport.

What travelers should do about a booking

Avelo said it would contact impacted customers by email and text and direct them to Customer Support for further help. The announcement does not establish a general refund, rebooking or travel-waiver policy. Check the airline’s current terms rather than assuming that a base closure or schedule change automatically gives every passenger the same remedy.

  1. Check the itinerary. Identify the origin, destination and travel date, and confirm whether you have a ticket or are only considering a trip.
  2. Check the current flight status and airline messages. Look for Avelo’s email or text about your specific booking; a base closure alone does not show whether a particular flight is canceled.
  3. Contact Customer Support if the itinerary is affected. Ask what options apply to that booking and verify any refund, rebooking or other terms directly with the airline.

Fleet changes and later network plans

Avelo said it planned to remove six Boeing 737-700 aircraft and operate primarily 737-800s. It also announced an order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft. These are company-reported operational figures from its 2026 announcement, not independent industry statistics.

The airline’s route page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists later additions that it had announced for planned future service. Routes from Dallas/McKinney to Atlanta and Denver were listed to begin December 16, 2026, and routes to Nashville and New Orleans on December 17. The page also listed five routes announced June 30 for planned November launches: Fort Lauderdale/Miami, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Orlando and Tampa. These were planned launches, not completed service as of the access date. The additions show that Avelo’s network was evolving; they do not establish how many routes were cut in January.
