Avelo is shrinking parts of its network even as it prepares for selective growth. In January 2026, the airline announced it would close bases in Mesa, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina, and remove six Boeing 737-700s. It also named Dallas/McKinney as a planned fifth core base, listed new routes for late 2026 and has a firm order for 50 Embraer E195-E2s. Those announcements point to a strategic pivot—not proof that expansion will succeed or that every planned aircraft will arrive on schedule.
What Avelo announced—and what it means for passengers
In a January 6, 2026 release, Avelo named New Haven, Connecticut; Philadelphia/Delaware Valley; Charlotte/Concord, North Carolina; and Central Florida/Lakeland as its four existing core bases. It said Dallas/McKinney, Texas, was planned as a fifth base in late 2026. At the same time, it announced closures of its bases at Mesa, Arizona; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Wilmington, North Carolina. Avelo’s restructuring announcement said near-term schedule changes would affect customer itineraries.
A base closure is not necessarily an airport exit. Avelo said it would continue serving Raleigh-Durham from New Haven and Rochester, and Wilmington from Nashville, New Haven, Tampa and Washington/Baltimore. Travelers should check the airline’s current schedule for a specific route, since a base closure or planned route does not by itself establish what will operate on a given date.
The West Coast question
Is Avelo Airlines leaving the West Coast? The available company material establishes a schedule transition, but not a complete chronology of every later West Coast route ending. Avelo’s April 2025 schedule announcement said Western U.S. flights were bookable through November 18, 2025. The January 2026 restructuring release specifically names Mesa, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington base closures; it does not document a total West Coast exit. The April 2025 schedule announcement is the basis for the bookable-through date.

Where Avelo is adding routes
Avelo’s route listing shows planned Dallas/McKinney service beginning in November 2026: Fort Myers on November 11; Las Vegas and Orlando on November 12; and Fort Lauderdale/Miami and Tampa on November 19. The airline also listed routes announced June 24, 2026, including New Haven–Houston (Bush), New Haven–Aguadilla, Lakeland–Aguadilla and Charlotte/Concord links to Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa, with starts scheduled in September and November 2026. These are schedule listings, not confirmation that a flight has operated; schedules can change. Check Avelo’s route listing before booking.
Expansion is not limited to new bases. Airport authority announcements show Avelo planned year-round, twice-weekly service from Indianapolis to Concord and New Haven beginning June 18, 2026, and from Cleveland Hopkins to the same two destinations beginning June 19. These routes connect Midwest-origin markets with East Coast destinations, illustrating growth through new city pairs as well as base development. What aircraft Avelo ordered
On September 10, 2025, Avelo announced a firm order for 50 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, plus purchase rights for 50 more. The firm order was assigned a US$4.4 billion list-price value by Avelo, excluding the additional purchase rights. The distinction matters: the airline has not announced a firm order for 100 aircraft. Avelo’s order announcement said deliveries were expected to begin in the first half of 2027; a later schedule-extension announcement said Avelo expects to become the first U.S. carrier to fly the type in 2028. An initial delivery expectation and a first-service estimate are different milestones, and neither establishes that deliveries will follow the original timetable. The later schedule-extension announcement provides the 2028 guidance.
Avelo has said the E195-E2’s short-field performance, range, efficiency and cabin configuration could help it serve new markets and existing airports, complementing its Boeing 737NG fleet. Those are the airline’s and manufacturer’s capability claims and intended uses, not independently demonstrated results for Avelo’s future operation. The order signals an intention to add a smaller narrowbody type, but aircraft deliveries, routes and economics remain future outcomes.

Why cut bases while planning growth?
The January 2026 restructuring combines contraction and expansion: fewer bases and six fewer 737-700s, alongside a plan to concentrate operations at five core bases and develop Dallas/McKinney. Avelo said the 737-700 removals and greater reliance on 737-800s were part of its plan to scale those bases and prepare for growth. That is management’s stated rationale, not independent evidence of lower costs, improved finances or sustainable growth.
The planned E195-E2 addition and the 737-700 removals are separate fleet decisions at different stages. The six 737-700 removals were announced as part of the restructuring; the E195-E2s are an order with future delivery and service milestones. Avelo’s September 2025 firm-order list value does not establish the eventual cost of the aircraft or the profitability of routes flown with them.

What the available performance figures can—and cannot—show
Avelo’s April 2025 fourth-anniversary release reported a 20-aircraft fleet in 2025: 12 Boeing 737-800s and eight 737-700s. That is a dated snapshot, not a current fleet count after the later announced removals. The same company release reported a 0.48% cancellation rate in 2024 and 83.9% on-time performance, defined as arrivals within 15 minutes of schedule under DOT’s A14 metric. Avelo attributed both figures to Anuvu’s third-party data platform. They are historical, company-reported results, not a guarantee of current performance. Avelo’s fourth-anniversary release also notes that a Wall Street Journal airline ranking excluded Avelo and other carriers below its size threshold; the reported punctuality figure should not be described as a DOT ranking.
The announcements therefore support a measured reading: Avelo is restructuring around fewer core bases while listing selective new service and preparing for a future aircraft type. They do not establish future load factors, revenue, market share, profitability or the success of the plan.
