Avago announced the acquisition on May 28, 2015; it closed on February 1, 2016, and the combined parent was named Broadcom Limited.
How did Avago and Broadcom combine?
On May 28, 2015, Avago Technologies Limited and Broadcom Corporation announced a definitive agreement for Avago to acquire Broadcom. The companies described the proposed combination as a diversified communications-semiconductor business with broader wired and wireless capabilities. Avago’s announcement framed the deal as combining Broadcom’s engineering and product capabilities with Avago’s technology businesses.
At the time, Hock Tan, Avago’s president and CEO, called it a combination of Broadcom’s “unparalleled engineering prowess” with Avago’s technology heritage. Broadcom CEO Scott McGregor said customers would gain access to greater breadth of technology and product capability. These were statements supporting the proposed transaction, not independent assessments of its eventual results.
When did Avago acquire Broadcom?
The transaction closed on February 1, 2016. The closing announcement said Avago’s acquisition of Avago Technologies Limited under Singapore law had completed and that the acquisition of Broadcom Corporation would complete that day, subject to California filings. The combined parent was called Broadcom Limited. The company later became Broadcom Inc. The closing announcement and company filing document the transaction and corporate context.

How much was the Avago–Broadcom deal worth?
Avago’s May 28, 2015 announcement gave two different deal measures. It described approximately $37 billion in implied transaction consideration, made up of $17 billion in cash and Avago equity valued at approximately $20 billion using Avago’s May 27 share price. It separately cited approximately $77 billion in enterprise value. Those announcement-date figures are not interchangeable: enterprise value and transaction consideration measure the deal differently.
The announcement also projected approximately $15 billion in combined annual revenue and $750 million in annual cost synergies expected within 18 months. These were management projections at announcement, not verified results established by the deal figures. They describe the business rationale and forecast, not the size of the companies’ patent holdings.

Did the merger make Broadcom a patent powerhouse?
The deal clearly joined large technology businesses, but the available primary announcements and filings do not quantify the patent assets contributed by each company or establish a post-merger patent ranking. A large transaction value, projected revenue, broad product portfolio, or engineering reputation cannot substitute for a patent inventory.
A defensible comparison would need to define what is being counted: patent families or individual patents, applications or grants, relevant ownership entities, jurisdictions, and a measurement date. Without those choices and a patent-specific source, the phrase “patent powerhouse” is a characterization rather than a verified finding. The deal materials support a conclusion about strategic and commercial scale, not a precise conclusion about patent power.

What businesses did the combined company cover?
At the 2016 close, Broadcom Limited described markets spanning wired infrastructure and wireless communications as well as enterprise storage, industrial applications, data-center networking, home connectivity, broadband access, telecommunications equipment, smartphones, and base stations. That breadth helps explain the companies’ stated aim of building a more diversified communications-semiconductor platform.
The company’s later portfolio should not be projected backward as though it were identical to the 2015 business. Broadcom’s fiscal 2025 filing describes a company that supplies semiconductor and semiconductor-based solutions as well as infrastructure software, with applications including AI and enterprise data centers, networking, servers and storage, home connectivity, broadband, wireless devices, and industrial uses. The filing also traces technology origins to businesses including AT&T/Bell Labs, Lucent, and Hewlett-Packard, alongside growth through acquisitions. Broadcom’s fiscal 2025 filing describes that later company; it is not a snapshot of the exact portfolio at the 2015 announcement.
