Autism Impact Fund (AIF) closed its first venture fund at $60 million, exceeding its original $50 million target, according to TechCrunch’s April 2, 2024 report. The announcement also described a broader investment thesis: alongside autism-focused companies, AIF would consider behavioral health, mental health, and wider healthcare needs. AIF is a venture fund seeking financial returns, not a charity. In April 2026, the firm announced that its second fund had reached a first close.

TechCrunch reported on April 2, 2024, that AIF had closed its first fund at $60 million, against an original target of $50 million. The report does not establish the precise date on which the fund’s final close occurred. TechCrunch’s report is the source for both the close and the target.
What does Autism Impact Fund invest in?
AIF’s 2024 announcement described a thesis extending beyond companies focused narrowly on autism. Areas named included behavioral-health data platforms, innovative healthcare solutions, value-based care frameworks, autism-related comorbidities such as gastrointestinal issues, and services connected to independence, including employment, financial independence, and housing. Artificial intelligence was identified as a major area for consideration. These are areas AIF said it would consider, not a guarantee that it invested in every category.
AIF’s portfolio page describes investments across life sciences and data- and technology-enabled services. Its company descriptions include virtual care, pediatric and complex-care services, behavioral-health technology, diagnostics, and clinical-stage therapeutics. These descriptions reflect how AIF characterizes its portfolio; they do not establish clinical efficacy or patient outcomes.

Why is Autism Impact Fund broadening its scope?
Chris Male, AIF’s co-founder and managing partner, told TechCrunch that the decision reflected what he described as autism’s broad and imprecisely understood nature, as well as overlapping behavioral, mental-health, and broader healthcare needs. He said the fund needed to “broaden that aperture” to address needs affecting individuals and families. This is Male’s explanation in the interview, rather than an independently demonstrated scientific finding.
The rationale matters to the fund’s strategy: a wider scope lets AIF consider companies addressing related needs instead of restricting its investment universe to businesses labeled specifically as autism-focused. The 2024 report described that shift as a venture-investing decision, not a change in the fund’s financial model.

Is Autism Impact Fund a charity?
No. AIF is a venture capital fund that seeks financial returns. Male told TechCrunch that the firm collaborates with nonprofits and foundations, while remaining intentional about driving returns through the venture-capital model. Its stated aim is to pursue returns while changing the status quo for autism-related services and solutions. That distinguishes its investment capital from charitable donations or grants.

In an April 2, 2026 release, AIF announced that Fund II had reached its first close. The firm reported approximately $150 million in assets under management across funds and investment vehicles, 17 Fund I portfolio companies, and two Fund I exits. These are company-reported figures in AIF’s release distributed through ACCESS Newswire; they were not independently audited in the sources reviewed.

The 2026 release described Fund II as investing in solutions related to autism, behavioral health, mental health, and related conditions. That update provides a more current description than the 2024 announcement alone, but a first close does not mean the fund has completed fundraising.
