Australian-headquartered Advanced Navigation plans to establish a U.S. headquarters and manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama, for navigation technology designed to work when GPS is jammed, spoofed, unreliable or unavailable. The company says the planned site will add U.S. research, development and production capacity alongside its operations in Australia and the United Kingdom; it is not a replacement for those operations.
What Advanced Navigation plans to make in Huntsville
Advanced Navigation America, the company’s U.S. arm, describes the planned facility as a Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Center of Excellence. The company’s October 6, 2026 announcement says the center will research, develop and manufacture technologies intended to counter electronic warfare, including fiber optics, MEMS, laser sensing, photonics, vision-based systems, artificial intelligence and quantum sensing.
Axios reported that the facility will produce inertial navigation and tracking products. Inertial navigation estimates position and movement from a known starting point using onboard sensors, rather than relying on continuous GPS signals. Advanced Navigation says its precision fiber-optic gyroscope sensors and laser velocity sensors can help defense systems determine position and motion when GPS is disrupted or unavailable. These capabilities are relevant to specialized aerospace and defense applications, including settings such as underwater or underground environments where GPS may not be available.
Why the company chose Huntsville
Huntsville is near a substantial aerospace and defense ecosystem. Mike Cohen, president of Advanced Navigation America, told Axios that aviation and space organizations from around the country have facilities and capabilities at Cummings Research Park. The company presents the local site as a U.S. node in a broader operation, intended to add production capacity and supply-chain redundancy for U.S. defense requirements.

Advanced Navigation says it works directly with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army to define future PNT requirements through programs including the All-Domain Persistent Experiment (APEX). The company also names Anduril, Kongsberg, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, Leonardo and Lockheed Martin among its aerospace, defense and technology customers; those relationships are company-reported.
Expected jobs, opening and production levels
The employment and production figures are projections, not confirmed outcomes. Axios reported that the Huntsville workforce could grow from fewer than 30 people to as many as 100, across engineering, supply chain and manufacturing roles. The company expects the facility to be operating around March or April, while Axios described the expected opening as spring 2027. As of October 2026, the site’s opening and final headcount remain unconfirmed.

Axios also reported company-representative Mike Cohen’s estimate that initial Huntsville production could reach about 25–30% of Australian output, with the possibility of eventually matching it. Those are forward-looking estimates, not measured production results.
What the $110 million funding figure does—and does not—mean
Advanced Navigation’s announcement associates the broader investment with its $110 million Series C funding round. It does not state how much of that funding is allocated specifically to the Huntsville facility, so the full round should not be described as a Huntsville investment. The company also reports that more than 100,000 systems have been deployed globally; that is a company-reported total.

The announced plan is to build a U.S. research, development and manufacturing center that complements Advanced Navigation’s operations in Australia and the United Kingdom. If the projected schedule and output are achieved, Huntsville would become a larger production and engineering presence for the company’s U.S. defense work. The announcement does not establish the final opening date, realized employment, eventual output or a Huntsville-specific investment amount.
