A single Powerball entry bought in Adelaide won the entire A$150 million jackpot drawn on Thursday, 23 May 2024. The winner was not identified at first because the ticket was not registered to a player card or online account, but an Adelaide man came forward the next morning to claim the prize.

How the A$150 million Powerball jackpot was won

The draw produced one division-one winning entry, purchased in Adelaide, South Australia. Because it was an unregistered entry, the lottery operator could not contact the holder through a linked player card or online account. ABC News reported on 24 May 2024 that the winner was still unknown; on 25 May it reported that an Adelaide man had claimed the prize that morning.

The reports establish that the winner came forward, but do not establish a publicly verified identity or what he planned to do with the money.

What record did the win set?

The Lott described the claimant as Australia’s biggest individual lottery winner at the time. That is not the same record as the largest jackpot. Later in FY24, Powerball offered a A$200 million jackpot—the largest in Australian history at that point—which was won by two entries and therefore shared.

The Lott’s FY24 summary also recorded 19 Powerball division-one winning entries across Australia during the financial year, with those entries collectively winning more than A$758 million. That is a national annual total, not a measure of one player’s odds.

What are the odds of winning Powerball division one?

The Lott lists the odds of division one for one standard Powerball game as 1 in 134,490,400. To win, a player must select all seven winning numbers and the Powerball in the same game panel. These are the operator’s published odds, not a guarantee about any particular draw’s outcome. See The Lott’s current Powerball odds.

What to do if you have a major winning ticket

The claim route depends on whether the ticket was bought online or in a store, as well as the state or territory where it was purchased. The Lott’s current guidance distinguishes the two channels:

Ticket type How a major prize is claimed
Online purchase through The Lott website or app The prize is paid into the online account after a two-week provisional period, according to The Lott’s current guidance.
In-store purchase A major prize is claimed through the relevant jurisdiction’s lottery office or by post. Procedures and claim limits vary by state or territory.

Registered division-one winners are contacted by the operator. A holder of an unregistered major winning ticket must contact The Lott to begin a claim. Check the official instructions for the jurisdiction and purchase channel that apply to your ticket before sending or presenting it. Read The Lott’s prize-claim guidance.
